  • Understanding the nature of MHD turbulence is of fundamental importance in astrophysics. The results of these studies can be used to develop the star formation theory. While most of previous studies have considered turbulence in uniform media, the stratification of media can play an important role. We performed three-dimensional numerical simulations of isothermal, compressible, MHD turbulence with different plasma beta's and different flow Mach numbers in stratified media to study the effects of stratification on turbulence. We found Statistics of turbulent flow in stratified media is different from in uniform media. In this talk, we present the statistical properties of the MHD turbulence, such as the PDF, power spectrum, and structure function.

  • Astrophysical shocks accelerate particles to high velocities, which we observe as cosmic rays. The acceleration process changes the nature of the shock because the particles interact with the local magnetic field, removing energy and potentially triggering instabilities. In order to simulate this process, we need a computational method that can handle large scale structures while, at the same time, following the motion of individual particles. We achieve this by combining the grid magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) method with the particle-in-cell (PIC) approach. MHD can be used to simulate the thermal gas that forms the majority of the gas near the shock, while the PIC method allows us to model the interactions between the magnetic field and those particles that deviate from thermal equilibrium. Using this code, we simulate shocks at various sonic and Alfvenic Mach numbers in order to determine how the behaviour of the shock and the particles depends on local conditions.

  • The transient magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generalized Couette flow with heat transfer through a porous medium of an electrically conducting, viscous, incompressible fluid bounded by two parallel insulating porous plates is studied in the presence of uniform suction and injection and a heat source considering the Hall effect. A uniform and constant pressure gradient is imposed in the axial direction and an externally applied uniform magnetic field as well as a uniform suction and injection are applied in the direction perpendicular to the plates. The two plates are kept at different but constant temperatures while the Joule and viscous dissipations are included in the energy equation. The effect of the Hall current, the porosity of the medium and the uniform suction and injection on both the velocity and temperature distributions is investigated.

  • This work is devoted to investigate heat and mass transfer effects on MHD natural convection flow past an inclined plate with ramped temperature numerically. The dimensionless governing equations for this investigation are solved by using finite element method. The effects of angle inclination, buoyancy ratio parameter, permeability parameter, magnetic parameter, Prandtl number, heat generation, thermal radiation, Eckert number, Schmidt number, chemical reaction parameter and time on velocity, temperature and concentration fields are studied and presented with the aid of figures. The effects of the pertinent parameters on skin friction, rate of heat transfer and mass transfer coefficients are presented in tabular form. The numerical results are compared graphically with previously published result as special case of the present investigation and results found to be in good agreement.

  • Compressible, magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in two dimension is studied through high-resolution, numerical simulations with the isothermal equation of state. First, hydrodynamic turbulence with Mach number $(M)_{rms}\;\~$1 is generated by enforcing a random force. Next, initial, uniform magnetic field of various strengths with Alfvenic Mach number Ma $\gg$ 1 is added. Then, the simulations are followed until MHD turbulence is fully developed. Such turbulence is expected to exist in a variety of astrophysical environments including clusters of galaxies. Although no dissipation is included explicitly in our simulations, truncation errors produce dissipation which induces numerical resistivity. It mimics a hyper-resistivity in our second-order accurate code. After saturation, the resulting flows are categorized as SF (strong field), WF (weak field), and VWF (very weak field) classes respectively, depending on the average magnetic field strength described with Alfvenic Mach number, $(Ma)_{rms}{\ge}1$, $(Ma)_{rms}{\~}1$, and $(Ma)_{rms}{\gg}1$. The characteristics of each class are discussed.

  • This paper presents the characteristics analysis and experiment of the electromagnetic pump using linear induction motor(LIM Pump) which can transfer the molten metals by the electromagnetic force. The characteristics of LIM Pump are analysed solving the magneto-hydro-dynamic(MHD) equation at various magnetic flux. The molten zinc is used in the experiment and the results we compared with the analysis.

  • Fundamental features of the arc stability in DC arc furnace of 720V/100kA/72MW have been investigated. Cassie-Mayr arc model has been employed and applied for the target dc arc furnace. In order to characterize the parameters of Cassie-Mayr arc model and the behavior of unstable arc dynamics, the advanced arc simulations of magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD) has been performed. The MHD based arc simulation has been validated in the subcomponent level, for the free burning arc set up in the laboratory. From the results of MHD simulation, dc arc dynamic resistance is proposed to be an effective arc stability function reflecting the instability of dynamic arc behavior. The experimental result confirms the usefulness of proposed dynamic arc resistance as arc stability function. The proposed arc stability function can be regarded as an effective criterion for the overall power conversion system to maintain highly stable arcing operation leading to better productivity and reliability.

  • In this paper, the peristaltic flow of Psedoplastic fluid with variable viscosity in an asymmetric channel is examined. The bionic effects by means of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) are taken into account. The assumptions of long wave length and low Reynolds number are taken into account. The basic equations governing the flow are first reduced to a set of ordinary differential equation by using appropriate transformation for variables and then solve by using perturbation method. The effect of physical parameters on the pressure rise, velocity and pressure gradient are illustrated graphically. The trapping phenomenon is analyzed through stream lines. A suitable comparison has also been made as a limiting case of the considered problem.

  • This paper presents the MHD characteristics of the liquid metal flow using an electromagnetic force. The flow velocity has been calculated by treating the Lorentz force as a source term in the Navier-Stokes equation. The liquid metal flow in duct using an electromagnetic pump was analyzed with the Lorentz force varied.
