  • A numerical and experimental investigation on the flow characteristics in the rectangular duct of an MHD propulsion system has been carried out. In numerical analysis, three-dimensional, steady-state, viscous, incompressible electrically conducting fluid flow under the influence of uniformly applied magnetic and electric fields was treated using a finite-difference technique. It was found from the numerical study that when the Lorentz force is weak, the typical parabolic velocity profile under a laminar flow condition changes to an M shaped profile near the electrode region and that the pressure increases linearly from the inlet toward the outlet of the MHD duct under constant electro-magnetic field. In experiment, thrust of the MHD propulsion system can be controlled easily by varying electrode current. The measured pressure gradient along the MHD duct is proportional to the Lorentz force, which is in agreement with the numerical results.

  • Valuable insight into the nonlinear dynamics of a system can be gleaned from its response to a single intense short pulse. We derive expressions for the corresponding nonlinear response functions and show that the fluctuation-dissipation theorem may be extended beyond the linear response limit to an arbitrary pulse intensity. As an illustrative example, we calculate response functions up to 11th order for the regular Lorentz gas in two dimensions.

  • The high-velocity electromagnetic forming (EMF) process is based on the Lorentz force and the energy of the magnetic field. The advantages of EMF include improved formability, wrinkle reduction, and non-contact forming. In this study, the electromagnetic-structural interlocking analysis was performed in order to analyze the moldability of aluminum pipe using electromagnetic molding. The magnetic flux density was decreased due to increasing electrical resistance as the temperature increased, and the stress-strain curve decreased. The higher the temperature, the lower the flow stress, increasing deformation.

  • In this paper, chaotic circuit of the voltage controlled Lorentz system for engineering applications has been designed and implemented in an electronic circuit. The proposed circuit consists of MOS variable resistor, multipliers, capacitors, fixed resistors and operational amplifiers. The circuit was analysed by PSPICE program. PSPICE simulation results show that chaotic dynamics of the circuit can be controlled by the MOS variable resistor through time series analysis, frequency analysis and phase diagrams. Also, we implemented the proposed circuit in an electronic hardware system with discrete elements. Measured results of the circuit showed controllability of the circuit using the MOS resistor.

  • In micro automation technology, the concurrent realization of a high resolution and a large operating rage has been achieved by a dual actuator, usually called by piggy-back system, conventionally. But, because of its manufacturing cost, the complexity of control, and the limit of overall bandwidth, the contract-free and single servo actuators have been suggested with specific applications. In this paper, we suggest a novel non-contact surface actuator suing combination of the Lorentz force and the magnetized force, and discuss the actuating principles including an analytical approach. Differently from the existing planar system, an operating range of the suggested system can be expanded by an additional attachment of active elements. Therefore, it is estimated to be suitable for the next-generation moving system.

  • ZnO thin films were grown on a glass by RF sputtering system with RF power 100W and oxygen partial pressure of $0%{/sim}30%$. Elliptic constants were measured by using a phase modulated spectroscopic ellipsometer and analyzed with the Tauc-Lorentz dispersion formula and best fit method in the range of 1.5 to 3.8eV. Also, scanning electron microscope(SEM) was used for the analysis of surface crystallization condition. From elliptic constants spectra, optical constants, thickness and roughness of ZnO films were evaluated. Total thickness of ZnO films obtained by ellipsometry showed good agreement with SEM data. It was found that the grain size of the films were getting smaller with increasing oxygen partial pressure. Band-gap of ZnO films increase with the oxygen partial pressure. These findings clearly indicate that optical properties of ZnO films are strongly dependent on the oxygen partial pressure. It could be explained that increasing the oxygen partial pressure induced high crystalline imperfection in the ZnO films.

  • This paper presents a new structure for a linear active magnetic bearing using a Halbach magnet array. The proposed magnetic bearing consisted of a Halbach magnet array, center magnet, and single coil. The proposed linear active magnetic bearing has a high dynamic force compared to the previous study. The high dynamic force could be obtained by varying the thickness of a horizontally magnetized magnet. The new structure of Halbach linear active magnetic bearing has a high dynamic force. Therefore, the proposed linear active magnetic bearing increased the bandwidth of the system. Magnetic modeling and optimal design of the new structure of the Halbach linear active magnetic bearing were performed. The optimal design was executed on the geometric parameters of the proposed linear active magnetic bearing using Sequential Quadratic Programming. The proposed linear active magnetic bearing had a static force of 45.06 N and a Lorentz force constant of 19.54 N/A, which is higher than previous research.

  • The curing of thermoset resin is accompanied with the changes in chemical and physical properties. The cure monitoring techniques can be designed by tracing these property changes. This paper presents the cure monitoring technique with fiber optic sensors to detect the change of refractive index during the polymerization process of engineering epoxy resin. The fiber optic sensor system was developed to measure the reflection coefficient at the interface between the fiber optic and the resin. The correlation between the sensor output and the degree of cure was performed following Lorentz-Lorenz law. The isothermal data from the sensors are compared with the data from differential scanning calorimeter.

  • This paper aims to discuss the Non Darcy boundary layer flow of non-conducting viscous fluid with magnetic ferroparticles over a permeable linearly stretching surface with ohmic dissipation and mixed convective heat transfer. A magnetic dipole is applied "a" distance below the surface of stretching sheet. The governing equations are modeled. Similarity transformation is used to convert the system of partial differential equations to a system of non-linear but ordinary differential equations. The ODEs are solved numerically. The effects of sundry parameters on the flow properties like velocity, pressure, skin-friction coefficient and Nusselt number are presented. It is deduced the frictional resistance of Lorentz force decreases with stronger electric field and the trend reverses for temperature. Skin friction coefficient increase with increase in ferromagnetic interaction parameter. Whereas, Nusselt number decrease.
