  • This research takes granite stone based floor finishing exposed to concentrated downpouring and observes the material's physical changes, adhesiveness, compressive strength under wet conditions. The results of the experiments shows that elution of sulfide mineral can occur when granite stones are exposed to downpour, but short term exposure shows little physical changes to the material. This indicates that if post maintenance is properly enacted, long term usage of granite stone materials is also possible.

  • A behavior-based control and learning architecture is proposed, where reinforcement learning is applied to learn proper associations between stimulus and response by using two types of memory called as short Term Memory and Long Term Memory. In particular, to solve delayed-reward problem, a knowledge-propagation (KP) method is proposed, where well-designed or well-trained S-R(stimulus-response) associations for low-level sensors are utilized to learn new S-R associations for high-level sensors, in case that those S-R associations require the same objective such as obstacle avoidance. To show the validity of our proposed KP method, comparative experiments are performed for the cases that (ⅰ) only a delayed reward is used, (ⅱ) some of S-R pairs are preprogrammed, (ⅲ) immediate reward is possible, and (ⅳ) the proposed KP method is applied.

  • The need for extended storage of used nuclear fuel is increasing globally as disposition schedules for used fuel are pushed further into the future. This is creating a situation where dry storage of used fuel may need to be extended beyond normal regulatory licensing periods. While it is generally accepted that used fuel in dry storage will remain in a safe condition, there is little data that demonstrate used fuel performance in dry storage environments for long periods of time. This is especially true for high burnup used fuel. This paper discusses a technical approach that defines a process that develops the technical basis for demonstrating the safety of used fuel over extended periods of time.

  • Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) researchers have identified Augmented Reality (AR) as a new technology that can assist inspections. Post-seismic structural inspections are conducted to evaluate the safety level of the damaged structures. Quantification of nearby structural changes over short-term and long-term periods can provide building inspectors with information to improve their safety. This paper proposes a Time Machine Measure (TMM) application based on an Augmented Reality (AR) Head-Mounted-Device (HMD) platform. The primary function of TMM is to restore the saved meshes of a past environment and overlay them onto the real environment so that inspectors can intuitively measure dynamic structural deformation and other environmental movements. The proposed TMM application was verified by demo experiments simulating a real inspection environment.

  • Inelastic deformation behavior of metals and alloys is considered rate dependent. Uniaxial ratcheting experiments performed by Ruggles and Krempl, and Hassan and Kyriakides exhibited that higher mean stress for a fixed stress amplitude resulted in higher ratchet strain within a rate independent framework and higher stress rate resulted in lower ratchet strain, respectively. These phenomena are qualitatively investigated by numerical experiments through unified viscoplasticity theory. The theory does not separate rate-independent plasticity and rate-dependent creep, and thus uses only one inelastic strain to describe inelastic deformation processes with the concept of the yield surface. The growth law for the kinematic stress, which is a tensor valued state variable of the constitutive equations, is modified to predict the linear evolution of long-term ratchet strain.

  • Generally, according to rising of atmospheric temperature, a consistency of concrete decreases, and a slump property of concrete is changed to be large. Also, in the strength development of concrete, the strength development rate of long-term age(28day) in comparison to strength of early age(7day) and the absolute compressive strength decreases. Accordingly, in this study, experiments about quality evaluation of concrete utilizing Ordinary Portland Cement is carried out. As a result of experiments, there were a conspicuous change in slump of concrete due to temperature increase. In conclusion, the rising of atmospheric temperature was very important factor in affecting the quality fluctuation of hot weather concrete.

  • The cold discharge from LNG(liquefied natural gas) terminal makes the water temperature around the terminal fall down. This temperature reduction may result in serious changes on marine ecosystem of the coastal area. The numerical model experiments of material transport and tidal circulation in the inner bay, Chinhae Bay are investigated in the dispersion of cold discharge from LNG terminal. The condition of ambient water is exposed to tide, tidal current and cold discharge temperature. Simple numerical model experiments highlight the importance of tidal circulation and cold discharge at each case and some results are discussed. The results of this study can be used as the guideline for the site selection of LNG terminals and long-term marine environmental impact assessment.

  • The objective of this work is to investigate the possibility of using the longitudinal strain on the surface of a pipe to determine the inception of dangerous free spanning. The long term objective is to develop an online monitoring technique to detect the development of dangerous free spanning in subsea pipelines. This work involves experimental study as well as finite element modeling. In the experiments, the strains at four points on a cross section of a pipeline inside the free span zone are measured. Pipes with different boundary conditions and different diameter to length ratios were tested. The pipe is treated as a simple beam with fixed-fixed or simply supported boundary conditions. The variation of the strains as a function of the diameter to length ratio gives a pointer to the inception of dangerous free spanning. The finite element results agree qualitatively with the experiments. The quantitative discrepancy is a result of the difficulty to replicate the exact boundary conditions that is used by the finite element program.

  • Currently, many companies have succeeded in logistics delivery experiments utilizing drone and report it. When a drone is used commercially, long-term flight is an important performance that a drone should have. However, unlike vehicles operated on the ground, drone is a vehicle that continues to consume energy when maintaining the current altitude or moving to the destination. Therefore, the drones can fly for a long time as the capacity of the battery is large, but the batteries with large capacity are restricted by heavy weight and it acts as a limiting factor in a commercial use. To address this issue, we attempt to compare how far we can fly than forward flight based on the flight pattern with the same energy consumption condition. In this paper, the comparison of energy consumption was performed in three flight pattern, forward flight without altitude change and forward flight with altitude change, by computer simulation and it shows the increasing of flight distances when the quadrotor fly with altitude change from high altitude to low altitude.
