  • This study is to present explicit analytical expressions for calculating bearing capacity factor $N_{\gamma}$, to provide results of the numerical computation instead of the graphical method. In this study, $N_{\gamma}$ is proposed in the critical failure surface on assumption that the center of log spiral in the radial shear zone can be located at the any points of around footing. The critical failure surface is one which yields minimum passive pressure $P_{\gamma}$ on the radial shear zone from the family of log spirals accoding to change of the center of log spiral. This study adoptes Terzaghi's bearing capacity principle(e.g., Prandtl's mechanism, limit equilibrium equation, superposition principle) but the soil wedge in an elastic zone makes angle $45^{\circ}+{\phi}/2$ with the horizontal and the location of the log spiral's center.

  • In this paper, the design of a 0.5~2 GHz cavity-backed spiral antenna is described. Combined arm pattern with a log spiral in the inner region and an Archimedean spiral in the outer region, a backing cavity, and a Marchand coaxial balun for feeding are designed. Termination resistors are used to improve antenna characteristics at the lower frequency of the operation frequency. VSWR, axial ratio, gain and HPBW(Half Power Beam Width) characteristics are simulated using CST's MWS. Finally, the validity of these approaches is verified by comparing the simulated results with the measured ones. Also, the measurement results are compared with the performance of a commercial spiral antenna.

  • This paper presents a kinematic limit analysis for passive earth pressure of rigid retaining structures considering the unsaturation of the backfill. Particular emphasis in the current work is focused on the effects of the spatial change in the degree of saturation on the passive earth pressure under different steady-infiltration/evaporation conditions. The incorporation of change of effective unit weight with degree of saturation is the main contribution of this study. The problem is formulated based on the log-spiral failure model rather than the linear wedge failure model, in which both the spatial variations of suction and soil effective unit weight are taken into account. Parametric studies, which cover a wide range of flow conditions, soil types and properties, wall batter, back slope angle as well as the interface friction angle, are performed to investigate the effects of these factors on the passive pressure and the corresponding shape of potential failure surfaces in the backfill. The results reveal that the flow conditions have significant effects on the suction and unit weight of the clayey backfill, and hence greatly impact the passive earth pressure of retaining structures. It is expected that present study could provide an insight into evaluation of the passive earth pressure of retaining structures with unsaturated backfills.

  • Purpose : This study aimed to investigate the effect of trunk postural stability maintained wearing a spiral elastic band on the upper extremity function of patients with stroke who undertook a functional activity program and to provide fundamental data useful for the application of therapeutic interventions in the clinical environment of occupational therapy. Methods : The research subjects included 16 patients with stroke who were evenly divided into an experimental group and a control group. The eight-week intervention consisted of a functional activity program aimed at improving the function of the affected-side upper extremity. The experimental group performed the functional activity program while maintaining a stable trunk posture by wearing a spiral elastic band. The control group followed the program without wearing the band. Upper extremity function was assessed before and after the intervention using a manual function test (MFT) and a motor activity log (MAL), and the effectiveness on the upper extremity function of the affected side was confirmed. Results : First, in the within-group comparison of the upper extremity function scores before and after the intervention, the experimental group showed a statistically significant difference in the MFT and MAL assessment(p<.05). The control group showed a statistically significant difference in the MAL assessment(p<.05). Second, in the between-group comparison of the change in scores after the intervention, a statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups in all assessments(p<.05). Conclusion : This study confirmed the positive effect on upper extremity function of trunk stabilization posture using a spiral elastic band. The results could be useful when implementing a task-oriented training program in the clinical environment of occupational therapy in the future, as application of the training while maintaining trunk postural stability by wearing a spiral elastic band could be more effective for improving the upper extremity function of patients with stroke.

  • The plane-wave shielding effectiveness is typically measured for horizontal and vertical polarizations using a linearly polarized antenna. However, this typical measurement method results in big evaluation fees due to very long measurement time as well as huge idle space for maintenance, these problems is more severe especially in large shielded enclosures such as EMP protection facilities to be built in indoor buildings and underground. This paper describes the design and fabrication process and results of a planar log-spiral antenna applicable to the evaluation of the electromagnetic shielding effectiveness of a large EMP protection facility. Since the proposed antenna has a circular polarization, there is no need to separately measure the horizontal and vertical polarizations. Therefore, the measurement time can be shortened by more than 1/2, and further, its small volume with a planar structure can reduce greatly idle space required for the maintenance.

  • In this paper, We describe antenna characteristics for efficiently detecting human signs using small, planar and low power antenna. Then we can measure biological signals including respiration, heart rate, blood pressure, and blood sugar, using UWB (Ultra Wide Band) pulses, while does not contact the human body. The antenna need stable and wideband impedance characteristic, because it use gaussian pulse signal. Usually it has trade-off between wideband impedance and gain. But we don't considered array type antennas because we want to need small size. Generally the antennas that classified as frequency independent satisfy our requirements. Frequency independent antennas include spiral, log-periodic, sinuous, and etc. These antennas are possible to have shape planar type. In this paper, We tested these kind antenna's characteristics in center frequency 5 GHz, Especially circular patch and sinuous antenna designed and analyzed.

  • We investigate the stellar population properties of nine passive spiral galaxies in the CALIFA survey. They have NUV-r > 5 and no/weak nebular emission lines in their spectra. They lie in the redshift range of 0.001 < z < 0.021 and have stellar mass range of 10.2 < ${\log}(M{\star}/M{\odot})$ < 10.8. We analyze the stellar populations out to two effective radius, using the best-fitting model to the measured absorption line-strength indices in the Lick/IDS system. We compare the passive spirals with S0s selected in the same mass range. S0s cover a wide range in age, metallicity, and [${\alpha}/Fe$], and stellar populations of the passive spirals are encompassed in the spread of the S0 properties. However, the distribution of passive spirals are skewed toward higher values of metallicity, lower [${\alpha}/Fe$], and younger ages at all radii. These results show that passive spirals are possibly related to S0s in their stellar populations. We infer that the diversity in the stellar populations of S0s may result from different evolutionary pathways of S0 formation, and passive spirals may be one of the possible channels.

  • Campylobacter jejuni, bacterial agent causing human diarrhea, were studied for their disinfection effects with chlorine and monochloramine. The cells treated with the chemical agents were observed by scanning electron microscopy to know their morphological and structural changes. The proteins and DNA in the chemical-treated cells were also examined by gel electrophoresis for structural changes. When C. jejuni were chlorinated at concentrations of 0.5 and 1.0 mg/l for 15 minutes, the organisms were disinfected by 4 and 6 log, respectively. Those disinfection effects were higher at acidic pH, while lowered at neutral and alkaline values of pH. The effects of monochloramine were lower than those of chlorine at the game concentration for the same period of reaction time. The shapes of C. jejuni cells treated with the agents appeared to be deformed from spiral rod into spherical forms, showing some destruction in surface structure of the cells. Some of the proteins and DNA of the chlorinated cells did not appear in the gel electrophoresis when the chlorination was at concentration of 10 mg/l or higher.

  • This paper presents the three-dimensional stability analysis of the homogeneous, isotropic soil Slopes. Rotational slides are assumed with a cylindroid central part terminated with log-spiral curved ends. The ratio of threeiimensional minimum factor of safety to two 4imensional case is examined and factor of safety changes are showed for the ratio of cylinder length to slope height. On touch babes the following conclusions may be made 1. Factors of safety computed for 3-D geometry differ considerablely from ordir, arty 2-D factor of. safety. Sinoe Fn 1 Fa2 exceeds unity, threeiimensional effects tend to increase the factor of safety. 2. A,B LIU increase, the value of Fb3/ Fs2 decreases. 3. The ratio of Fr/Fs2 appears to be very sensitive to c and values.
