  • This study was attempted to explore the relationship between locus of control and the discomfort of the patients at the initial stage of the orthodontic treatment. Locus of control was measured by 'Locus of Control(LOC) scale for children' and 'Orthodontic Locus of Control(OLOC) scale for children'. The discomfort was measured by 'discomfort index card' in 52 children and adolescent patients who initiate orthodontic treatment. In addition, locus of control of the patients' mothers was measured by 'Orthodontic Locus of Control(OLU) scale for parents'. The results were as follows : 1. The test-retest reliability of 'Locus of Control(LOC) scale for children' and 'Orthodontic Locus of Control(OLOC) scale' was in the moderate to high range. 2. Out of 52 patients, 47 showed moderate to severe discomfort following placement of an initial archwire. The patients showed the most severe discomfort on the first day, and most of the discomfort was manifested within the first 3 days, then decreased until the 7th day. There was no significant difference in the discomfort according to sex and age. 3. The discomfort of the patients was the highest in the morning session when a day was divided into 4 sessions, i.e., morning, afternoon, evening, and night. 4. In the score of 'Locus of Control(LOC) scale for children' and 'Orthodontic Locus of Control(OLOC) scale for children', the group of internal locus of control expressed more discomfort than the group of external locus of control. And there was no significant correlation between locus of control of the patients and that of their mothers. 5. There was no significant difference in the score of locus of control according to sex and me. However, the score of boys tended to be lower than that of girls and the score of primary school students higher than that of middle and high school students.

  • Promoting women's health lifestyles are important due to their connection to family health. The purpose of this study was to analyse women's health lifestyles(HPL) and their effects on women's life-cycle, so in order to develop a program in a women's health care center. The subjects included were 1080 women over 18 years old living in Wonju city, and were selected by stratified and purposive sampling. The data were collected through a questionnaire and interview. The Cronbach $\alpha$, %, mean, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and regression in SPSS PC Win. package was used to analyze the data. The sample was sepernted into three groups premarital group 20.2%(premarital women between 18 and 40 years old), delivery and children rearing group 49.9%(marital women between 18 and 40 years old), over middle agedelderly group 29.9%(women over 41 years old). Significant difference were found in the HPL according to group. Also, relating variables, such as self-efficacy, family functions, health locus of control and gender role perception that were considered relating variables to HPL significantly differed among the three groups. HPL significantly correlated with self-efficacy, family functions, HLOC and gender role perception in all participants and at all groups. The regression analysis of HPL was interpreted 40.6% with relating variables, self-efficacy, health attention, family functions, and internal locus of control, health perception, power other locus of control and chance locus of control in all participant. Self-efficacy, family functions, health attention were considered important variables in premarital group, self-efficacy, family functions, internal locus of control, health attention, health perception and power of control were important in delivery-rearing group. Self-efficacy, health attention, internal locus of control, family functions and health perception were important in middle aged-elderly group. As a result, we found the differences HPL scores and relating variables according to life-cycle groups. Therefore, we should prepare health promoting education programs for women according to women's life cycles. Also we suggest that women's health care centers based on communities was needed for proper management of women's health.

  • The purpose of this study were l) to provide information useful in developing an individualized health promotion program, 2) to test the correlations among the level of locus of control, health promotion activities and value placed on self. 3) to assess the factors of health promotion activities and value placed on self. The level of locus of control was measured by Walston/Walston's scales. The levels of health promotion activities and value placed on self were measured by Pender/Pender's scales. The sample consist of 122 female students in a University in Seoul. Their mean ages were 21. The results are summarized as follows; 1. Hypothesis 1 : The higher the score of internal health locus of control, the higher the score of health promotion activities was supported. 2. Hypothesis 2 : The higher the score of value placed on self, the higher the score of health promotion activites was supported. 3. Hypothesis 3 : The higher the score of value placed on self, the higher the score of internal health locus of control was supported. 4. The highest score of the factors of health promotion activities is nutritional practice$(14.976\pm.907)$ and the lowest score is self care$(1l.930\pm1.169).$ In conclusion, several implications for nursing emerge from the theory and research behind the locus of control concept. First, scales to measure locus of control may be useful in evaluating health education programs. Second, it may be adventageous to screen individuals using a health locus of control scale before placement into a treatment program that matches their needs. Third, health professionals may want to train individuals to become more internals appear more likely to engage in positive health behaviors.

  • This study purposed to examine how school violence victims' coping behaviors are affected by locus of control and social support. Two hundred and thirty fifth and sixth graders from four elementary schools in Seoul filled out School Violence Scale reports of the Seoul Council for Safe School (2002), Attributional Style Questionnaire (Weinstein, 1980) revised by Young Sil Im(2004), Social Support Appraisal Scale (Dubow & Ulman, 1989) revised by Myung Sook Kim(1994), and Stress Coping Behaviors reports(Park & Chung, 2001). The data were analyzed with the descriptive statics and t-test. The results of this study were as follows: First, more children showed internal locus of control than external one under negative circumstances. School violence victims perceived family's support to be more important than friend's and teacher's support. Their coping behaviors were partitioned in the order of active, aggressive, passive/avoidant, and social support seeking. Second, children with internal locus of control used more passive/avoidant coping behavior than those with external one. Third, children who perceived high social support from family used more active and social support seeking coping behavior. Children who perceived low support from friends used more passive/avoidant coping behavior while those with low support from teachers used more aggressive coping behavior. In conclusion, there are differences in stress coping behaviors by victims of school violence based on their internal or external locus of control and perceived social support.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the relationships between hope, health locus of control and general health of nursing students. The subjects of this study were 161 female students of National Nursing School in Seoul. Data was collected through a questionnaire from May 11 to May 23, 1998. The tools used for this study were Hope scale developed by Miller and Power, Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale developed by Wallston and Wallston and General Health Scale(Modified Conel Medical Index) developed by Nam Ho Chang. Data were analysed in an the $SPSS/pc^+$ program using frequency for the demographic characteristics, 1-test and ANOVA for relationship between the variables and demographic characteristics and for it's differences of hope and general health control. Peason correlation coefficient for relationship between the 3 variables, hope, health locus of control, and general health. The results of this study were as follows ; The 1st hypothesis : that 'Between hope, health locus of control (HLC) and general health of nursing students will have positive relationship', was supported(=.2883, p=.000). The 2nd hypothesis; that 'The hope score of nursing students in HLC-internal group will be higher than others' was supported(F=5.22, p=.0063). The 3rd hypothesis ; that 'The general health of nursing students in HLC -internal group will be higher than others' was accepted(F=2.94, p=.0554). The 4th hypothesis ; that 'Hope, HLC and general health of nursing students according to demographic characteristics will be different ' was accepted in part. o In hope the more age, the higher score. o In HLC the group of non religious have higher score(t=-2.02, p=.045). o No experienced addmission was revealed HLC-internal group(t=-1.91, p=.058). o Non religious group has a tendency to dependent upon on powerful other person(t=-1.99, p=.049). o The hope score of nursing students was very high(4.49/6point). o The general health status of nursing students was vert good(92.88/114point). o Most of nursing students was in HLC-internal group(81.4%). o The most frequent complaints of nursing students was dizziness suddenly developed(68.4/114point), very nervous in small thing(67.83/114) and very nervous to others critics(68.4/114) in turn. In conclusion, the students who have high score of hope, in HLC-internal group have good general health. Hope inspiring not only makes one's good health but also makes others good health and powering hope. For good health person who are in HLC-internal group have powerful hope, keeping good health would be a good stretegy to change the student's HLC and make them good health and hope powering then it would be a good method to change the HLC to HLC-internal group.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between health locus of control (HLOC) and the eating behaviors in obese high school girls. The sample consisted of 262 obese high school girls in Seoul and Kangwon-Do. The results of this study were as follows: 1. The average scores of HLOC were HLOC- Internal; 4.06, HLOC-External; 2.47, and HLOC-Chance; 2.15. 2. The average scores of eating behavior factors were Disinhibition ; 2.91, Hunger ; 2.73, Dietary Restraint ; 2.55. 3. The HLOC-Internal and eating behavior (dietary restraint, disinhibition and hunger) were correlated positively. The HLOC- Chance and hunger was correlated positively. But HLOC-Chance and other eating behavior factors (dietary restraint & disinhibition) were not correlated in the level of statistical significances. The HLOC-External and eating behavior (dietary restraint, disinhibition and hunger) were correlated positively. 4. There was not a significant difference in HLOC depending on the existence of an obese sibling. There were significant differences in HLOC-Internal and HLOC- External depending on the evaluation of one's body figure. 5. There were significant differences in disinhibition and hunger depending on the existence of obese sibling. Also, there were significant difference in dietary restraint according to self perception of who is obese or not (t=3.342, p=.001). This study has shown a correlation between HLOC and eating behavior. As a result of these findings, clinical and school nurses should be involved in management and counselling obese girls concerning individual health locus of control and eating behavior.
