The importance of the life cycle cost (LCC) analysis for bridges has been recognized over the last decade. However, it is difficult to predict LCC precisely since the costs occurring throughout the service life of the bridge depend on various parameters such as design, construction, maintenance, and environmental conditions. This paper presents a methodology for the optimal life cycle cost design of a bridge. Total LCC for the service life is calculated as the sum of initial cost, damage cost, maintenance cost, repair and rehabilitation cost, user cost, and disposal cost. The optimization method is applied to design of a bridge structure with minimal cost, in which the objective function is set to LCC and constraints are formulated on the basis of Korean Bridge Design Code. Initial cost is calculated based on standard costs of the Korea Construction Price Index and damage cost on damage probabilities to consider the uncertainty of load and resistance. Repair and rehabilitation cost is determined using load carrying capacity curves and user cost includes traffic operation costs and time delay costs. The optimal life cycle cost design of a bridge is performed and the effects of parameters are investigated.

The gas-turbine generator of Seo-Incheon combined-cycle plant was tested for derivation of a model for dynamic analysis. Load rejection and AVR step test was performed to get the dynamic response of generator. The parameters of generator/control system model were determined by these measured data. No-load saturation test was performed for the saturation characteristics of the generator under steady state. V-curve test was also performed so as to find exact generator parameters. Q-axis parameters of generator was derived by measuring power angle. AVR and governor constants have been tuned by their oscillatory period and setting time characteristics. The derived parameters of generator control system is verified by one-machine infinite bus system simulation. (author). 7 refs., 20 figs., 5 tabs.
This paper presents experimental results of rock-concrete bi-material discs under cyclically diametrical compression. It was found that both specimens under cyclical and static loading failed in three typical modes: shear crack, tensile crack and a combined mode of shear and wing crack. The failure modes transited gradually from the shear crack to the tensile one by increasing the interface angle between the interface and the loading direction. The cycle number and peak load increased by increasing the interface angle. The number of cycles and peak load increased with the interface groove depth and groove width, however, decreased with increase in interface groove spacing. The concrete strength can contribute more to the cycle number and peak load for specimens with a higher interface angle. Compared with the discs under static loading, the cyclically loaded discs had a lower peak load but a larger deformation. Finally, the effects of interface angle, interface asperity and concrete strength on the fatigue strength were also discussed.

This paper presents a quasi-static optimization technique for elastic structures under dynamic loads. An equivalent static load (ESL) set is defined as a static load set which generates the same displacement field as that from a dynamic load at a certain time. Multiple ESL sets calculated at every time step are employed to represent the various states of the structure under the dynamic load. They can cover every critical state that might happen at an arbitrary time. Continuous characteristics of dynamic load are simulated by multiple discontinuous ones of static loads. The calculated sets of ESLs are applied as a multiple loading condition in the optimization process. A design cycle is defined as a circulated process between an analysis domain and a design domain. Design cycles are repeated until a design converges. The analysis domain gives a loading condition necessary for the design domain. The design domain gives a new updated design to be verified by the analysis domain in the next design cycle. This iterative process is quite similar to that of the multidisciplinary optimization technique. Even though the global convergence cannot be guaranteed, the proposed technique makes it possible to optimize the structures under dynamic loads. It has also applicability, flexibility, and reliability.
Recently, as the building structure has been larger, higher, longer and more specialized, the demand of material with high-strength concrete for building has been increasing. In this research, silica-fume was used as an admixture in order to get a high-strength concrete. From the test result, High-strength concrete with cylinder strength of 1,200kgf/$\textrm{cm}^2$ in 28-days was produced and tested. The static test was carried out to measure the ultimate load, the initial load of flexural and diagonal cracking, crack patterns and fracture modes. The load versus strain and load versus deflection relations were obtained from the static test. The relation of cycle loading to deflections on the mid-span, the crack propagation and the modes of failure according to cycle number, fatigue life and S-N curve were observed through the fatigue test. Based on the fatigue test results, high-strength reinforced concrete beams failed to 57~66 percent of the static ultimate strength. Fatigue strength about two million cycles from S-N curves was certified by 60 percent of static ultimate strength.
This paper presents a comprehensive integrity assessment of welded structural components, including uniform high- and low-cycle fatigue assessment of welded plate joints and fatigue-induced fracture assessment of welded plate joints. This study reports a series of fatigue and fracture tests of welded plate joints under three-point bending. To unify the assessment protocol for high- and low-cycle fatigue of welded plate joints, this study develops a numerical damage assessment framework for both high- and low-cycle fatigue. The calibrated damage material parameters are validated through the smooth coupon specimens. The proposed damage-based fatigue assessment approach describes, with reasonable accuracy, the total fatigue life of welded plate joints under high- and low-cycle fatigue actions. Subsequently, the study performs a tearing assessment on the ductile crack extension of the fatigue-induced crack. The tearing assessment diagram derives from the load-deformation curve of a single-edge notched bend, SE(B) specimen and successfully predicts the load-crack extension relation for the reported welded plate joints during the stable tearing process.

This study on condominium complex will adopt the quantitative assessment of the influence on the environment throughout the entire life cycle of buildings. This paper applies input-out analysis in order to analyse embodied energy regarding input of materials at material production phase. Also, it calculates environment load at use and demolition and destruction Phases of buildings as analysing energy consumption. The study categorises environment load as six impact categories and undertakes environmental impact evaluation. The consequence shows that the environment load of multi-unit dwelling takes up 88.2% out of the entire environment load of condominium complex. Also, as a result of analyzing the environmental impact of the life cycle of condominium buildings, it was found that such environmental impact comprised of about 11.96% of all industries in Korea that had an environmental impact.
The hardness and mechanical properties of the minerals in the Daejeon granite according to depths were investigated by indentation test, load-unload test, and cycle test of dynamic ultra-micro hardness. As a result of the tests, it was possible to classify into three mineral groups (Group-1, -2, -3). The Martens hardness was not significantly different between 41 m and 223 m depths in three mode tests. Nevertheless, they showed in the order of a cycle test < load-unload test < indentation test. Considering the average Martens hardness, elastic modulus, and indentation work for each mineral group, their boundaries were relatively clear. In conclusion, A relatively accurate hardness of minerals can be obtained by three mode tests of dynamic ultra-micro hardness. In addtion, it was possible to characterize the elastic modulus and the elastic-plastic properties of the minerals from the load-unload and cycle tests.

In this research, life cycle inventory database (LCI DB) was developed for elastomeric bearing employing life cycle assessment (LCA) methodology additionally the reliability improvement rate in the evaluation of the environmental load of the bridge was analyzed. As are result of impact assessment by 6 major impact categories, production of elastomeric bearing puts on environmental impact in the order of resource depletion, global warming, photochemical oxidant creation. and among a wide variety of input, steel plates contributes in most of the impact categories. As a result of applying the elastomeric bearing LCI database constructed in this study, the environmental loads increased by 0.53% on average, and the cut-off based on the cost of input materials increased by 11.36%. It is anticipated that it will be possible to improve the credibility and to provide data based on current production technology, such as estimating GHG emissions and evaluating environmental load, by constructing elastomeric bearing LCI DB.
