Liquefaction susceptibility of silty tailings under monotonic triaxial tests in nearly saturated conditions

  • Tailings are waste materials of mining operations, consisting of a mixture of clay, silt, sand with a high content of unrecoverable metals, process water, and chemical reagents. They are usually discharged as slurry into the storage area retained by dams or earth embankments. Poor knowledge of the hydro-mechanical behaviour of tailings has often resulted in a high rate of failures in which static liquefaction has been widely recognized as one of the major causes of dam collapse. Many studies have dealt with the static liquefaction of coarse soils in saturated conditions. This research provides an extension to the case of silty tailings in unsaturated conditions. The static liquefaction resistance was evaluated in terms of stress-strain behavior by means of monotonic triaxial tests. Its dependency on the preparation method, the volumetric water content, the void ratio, and the degree of saturation was studied and compared with literature data. The static liquefaction response was proved to be dependent mainly on the preparation technique and degree of saturation that, in turn, controls the excess of pore pressure whose leading role is investigated by means of the relationship between the -B Skempton parameter and the degree of saturation. A preliminary interpretation of the static liquefaction response of Stava tailings is also provided within the Critical State framework.

  • The evaluation technique of seismic performance on agricultural infrastructure based on dynamic numerical simulations, which Included a cyclic elasto-plastic and a viscoelastic-viscoplastic constitutive model to actual multi-layered ground conditions during large earthquake were performed by a liquefaction analysis in the present study. From the liquefaction analysis, it was verified that the models can give a good description of the damping characteristics and liquefaction phenomena of ground accurately during large event which induces plastic deformation in large strain range.

Liquefaction Behaviour and Prediction of Deviator Stress for Unsaturated Silty Sand

  • This study was carried out to investigate the liquefaction behaviour and predict deviator stress with matric suction, of unsaturated silty sand. The unsaturated soil tests were conducted using a modified triaxial cell and specimens were prepared using the moisture tamping method. The axis translation technique was used to create the desired matric suctions in the specimen. Undrained triaxial compression tests were carried out at matric suction of 0, 2, 5, 10 and 25 kPa. The specimens were sheared to axial strains of about 20% to obtain steady state conditions. The results showed that liquefaction of silty sand only occurs at matric suction of 0 kPa and 2 kPa. The results also show that at matric suctions of 5, 10 and 25 kPa, the resistance to liquefaction increases. As the suction increases, the undrained effective stress path approached the drained stress path. Also, the predicted and measured maximum deviator stress for unsaturated soils using the effective stress concept showed good agreement as matric suction increases. The deviator stress increase is nonlinear as matric suction increases.

최적화 기법을 이용한 LNG FPSO 액화 공정 장비의 다층 배치 (Multi-floor Layout for the Liquefaction Process Systems of LNG FPSO Using the Optimization Technique)

  • A layout of an LNG FPSO should be elaborately determined as compared with that of an onshore plant because many topside process systems are installed on the limited area; the deck of the LNG FPSO. Especially, the layout should be made as multi-deck, not single-deck and have a minimum area. In this study, a multi-floor layout for the liquefaction process, the dual mixed refrigerant(DMR) cycle, of LNG FPSO was determined by using the optimization technique. For this, an optimization problem for the multi-floor layout was mathematically formulated. The problem consists of 589 design variables representing the positions of topside process systems, 125 equality constraints and 2,315 inequality constraints representing limitations on the layout of them, and an objective function representing the total layout cost. To solve the problem, a hybrid optimization method that consists of the genetic algorithm(GA) and sequential quadratic programming(SQP) was used in this study. As a result, we can obtain a multi-floor layout for the liquefaction process of the LNG FPSO which satisfies all constraints related to limitations on the layout.

정규화LPI와 전단파 속도의 상관관계를 활용한 서울과 경주 지역 액상화 위험도 평가 (Assessment of Liquefaction Potential Using Correlation between Shear Wave Velocity and Normalized LPI on Urban Areas of Seoul and Gyeongju)

  • 최근 경주와 포항에서 발생한 지진으로 국내에서 액상화 현상에 대한 관심이 커지고 있다. 지반의 액상화는 포화된 상태에서 지진과 같은 동하중을 받았을 때 과잉간극수압이 발생하여 흙이 강도를 상실하고 물과 같이 거동하는 현상이며 지반 침하와 상부구조물의 전도와 같은 심각한 문제를 야기한다. 따라서 액상화 발생 가능성을 미리 파악하고 대비할 필요가 있다. 액상화의 발생 가능성과 액상화 피해 정도는 일반적으로 액상화 가능 지수(Liquefaction Potential Index, LPI)에 의해 정량적으로 평가된다. LPI의 계산은 시추공 별로 이루어지며 지반응답해석이 필수적인 작업으로 선행되어 많은 시간과 노력이 필요하다. 본 연구에서는 다양한 지하수위 분포를 가지는 넓은 지역의 액상화 평가를 간단히 수행할 수 있도록 전단파 속도와 LPI의 상관관계를 이용한 액상화 평가 방법을 제안하였다. 제안된 방법은 액상화 가능 층의 평균 전단파 속도(${\bar{V}}s^{\prime}liquefiable$)와 액상화 가능 층의 두께로 나누어 정규화한 정규화 LPI의 상관관계를 분석하여 지하수위 별로 다양한 암반노두가속도에 대해 적용 가능한 상관관계식을 제시하고 이용한다. 상관관계를 이용한 액상화 평가 방법의 적용성을 확인하기 위해 서울특별시의 104개 시추조사자료를 이용하여 지하수위 0m, 1m, 2m, 3m에 대해 상관관계식을 제시하였으며 제시한 상관관계식을 이용하여 서울특별시와 경주시의 액상화 발생 가능성을 평가하였다. 지반응답해석을 이용해 계산한 LPI와 상관관계식을 이용해 계산한 LPI를 비교하였으며 제안된 액상화 평가 방법의 적용성을 확인하였다. 마지막으로 제안된 액상화 평가 방법에 따라 결정된 LPI의 분포를 지구통계학적 기법인 크리깅을 통해 지도로 나타내었다.

천연가스 액화공정의 최적설계 (Optimal Design of Natural Gas Liquefaction Processes)

  • 본 총설에서는 천연가스 액화공정의 최적설계에서 에너지 효율을 높이기 위해 고려해야 하는 주요 공정설계 인자들에 대한 논의와 상용 LNG 플랜트에서 이러한 인자들이 어떻게 적용되고 있는지에 대하여 살펴보았다. 압축기에서 소모되는 축일의 양을 최소화하기 위한 방법으로서 단일 냉매를 사용하는 냉각 사이클을 다단, 혹은 중첩 구조로 설계하여 온도 범위가 넓은 영역에서 운용하는 방법과 혼합냉매를 사용하여 단순한 사이클 구조를 유지하면서 최적 냉각공급 곡선을 유지하는 방법을 다루었고, 천연가스 액화조건에 맞추어 이러한 구조들의 최적 조합을 구성하는 원리를 소개하였다. 열 통합(heat integration) 기법을 활용하여 상용화 공정들의 특징을 도식적으로 고찰하였으며 아울러 에너지 효율 및 경제성에 대한 분석을 수행하였다. 또한 액화 공정 설계에서 사용되는 대용량의 압축기들을 구동하는 에너지 시스템에 대한 설계 문제를 살펴보았으며 최적설계를 위한 여러 가지 요소들을 고찰하여 보았다.

수소재액화를 위한 자기냉매용 HoN 나노분말 합성 및 자기열량효과 연구 (Study on the Synthesis of HoN Nanoparticles and Magnetocaloric Effect as Magnetic Refrigerant for Hydrogen Re-Liquefaction)

  • Rare-earth (RE) nitrides can be used as magnetocaloric materials in low temperature. They exhibit ferromagnetism and have Curie temperature in the region from 6 to 70 K. In this study, Holmium nitride (HoN) nano particles were prepared through plasma arc discharge technique and their magnetocaloric properties were studied. Nitrogen gas ($N_2$) was employed as an active element for arc discharge between two electrodes maintained at a constant current. Also, it played an important role not only as a reducing agent but also as an inevitable source of excited nitrogen molecules and nitrogen ions for the formation of HoN phase. Partial pressure of $N_2$ was systematically varied from 0 to 28,000 Pa in order to obtain single phase of HoN with minimal impurities. Magnetic entropy change (${\Delta}S_m$) was calculated with data set measured by PPMS (Physical Property Measurement System). The as-synthesized HoN particles have shown a magnetic entropy change ${\Delta}S_m$) of 27.5 J/kgK in applied field of 50,000 Oe at 14.2 K thereby demonstrating its ability to be applied as an effective magnetic refrigerant towards the re-liquefaction of hydrogen.

  • The target of this work was the process development of demonstration plant to produce the high quality alternative fuel oil by the pyrolysis of mixed plastic waste. In the first step of research, the bench-scale units of 70 t/y and the pilot plant of 360 t/y had been developed. Main research contents in this step were the process performance test of pilot plant of 360 ton/year and the development of demonstration plant of 3,000 t/y, which was constructed at Korea R & D Company in Kimjae City. The process performance of pilot plant of 360 t/y showed about 80% yield of liquid product, which was obtained by both light gas oil(LGO) and heavy gas oil(HGO), The boiling point range distribution of LO product that was mainly consisting of olefin components in PONA group appeared at between that of commercial gasoline and kerosene. On the other hand, HO product was mainly paraffin and olefin components and also appeared at upper temperature distribution range than commercial diesel. Gas product showed a high fraction of $C_3\;and\;C_4$ product like LPG composition, but also a high fraction of $CO_2$ and CO by probably a little leak of process.

혼합냉매 조성에 따른 C3MR 천연가스 액화공정 성능 비교 (Effects of Compositions of Mixed Refrigerants on the Performance of a C3MR Natural Gas Liquefaction Process)

  • 이번 연구의 목적은 세계적으로 널리 이용되고 있고, 액화 효율이 높은 Air Products and Chemicals Inc. (APCI)사(社)의 C3MR(Propane Pre-cooled & Mixed Refrigerants) 천연가스 액화공정에 사용되는 혼합냉매의 최적 조성을 통계학적 기법으로 결정하는 것이다. 공정모사는 상업 공정 모사기를 이용했으며 혼합냉매는 methane ($C_1$), ethane ($C_2$), propane ($C_3$)과 nitrogen ($N_2$)로 선택하였다. 그리고 혼합물 설계(mixture design, MD)와 중심합성계획법(central composite design, CCD)을 이용하여 전체 공정의 에너지 소비가 최소가 되게 하는 최적의 혼합냉매 조성을 결정하였다. 연구결과 기존 설계 대비 최대 11.28%의 에너지 소비 절감을 확인하였다. 또한 주 극저온 열교환기(main cryogenic heat exchanger, MCHE)의 온도 프로파일을 통해 열적 효율성도 함께 비교하였다.
