Frequency Dependance of Ground Impedances of the Counterpoises (매설지선 접지임피던스의 주파수 의존성)

  • Ground impedance is changed according to frequency of the current injected into the grounding system. Because the lightning surge gives a broad frequency spectrum from some ten Hz to a few MHz, frequency dependance of ground impedance must be evaluated. In this paper, we have constructed 10m, 30m, 50m counterpoise and evaluated frequency dependance of ground impedance. Also we have evaluated frequency dependance of ground impedance according to current injection point. As a result, long counterpoises have low ground resistance, but ground impedances of those are significantly increased in the range of high frequency. In the case that currents are injected into the center of counterpoise, the ground impedance is most lower than any other injection point. Also, additory ground rod of 1.8m long affect ground impedance decrease.

  • This paper presents characteristics of frequency-dependent grounding impedance and transient grounding impedance for the carbon compound grounding electrode used in the installation of computerized electronic equipment and lightning protection system. The frequency-dependent grounding impedances were measured by applying sinusoidal currents in the frequency range from 100 [Hz] to 10[MHz], and the transient grounding impedances were examined by subjecting the impulse current with the front-time between 1~80[${\mu}s$]. As a result, the ground resistance of the carbon compound grounding electrode is less than that of another type grounding electrodes. The transient grounding impedance is relatively low and the conventional grounding impedance is rather lower than the ground resistance. The frequency-dependent grounding impedance of the carbon compound grounding electrode is capacitive and the grounding impedance is decreased with increasing the frequency of injected currents. Therefore in the case that the carbon compound grounding electrode is jointly used with large-scaled grounding electrodes, it is possible to reduce the high frequency grounding impedance of the integrated grounding electrode system.

Measurement and Statistical Analysis of Magnetic Fields Produced by Cloud Discharges (운방전에 의해 발생되는 자장의 계측과 통계적 분석)

  • In this work, to obtain the detailed information about lightning electromagnetic field waveforms, the LabVIEW based-measurement system of time-changing magnetic fields was designed and constructed. The frequency bandwidth of the magnetic field measuring system ranges from 300 [Hz] to 1 [MHz], and the response sensitivity is 2.78 [mV/nT]. Data acquisition system with the resolution of 12 bits and memory capacity of 32 [Mbyte] was triggered by the magnetic field to be measured. The properties and parameters of the magnetic fields produced by cloud discharges were statistically investigated. The magnetic field waveforms radiated from cloud lighting discharges tend to be bipolar, with two or more narrow and several pulses superimposed on the initial front part. The recording length of the magnetic field measurement system is about 10 [ms]. The mean duration of cloud discharges is 1.3 [ms], and the number of outburst pulses for the period is 8 in average. The front times of the magnetic fields are 6.15 [$\mu$s] in average. The the zero-to-zero crossing times that is the initial half-cycle duration is widely dispersed and the mean value is 9.61 [$\mu$s], and the mean value of percentage depth of dip to opposite polarity is 41.1 [$\%$].

  • It is important that study on cryogenic electrical insulation design to develop the cold dielectric(CD) type HTS cable because the cable is operated under the high voltage environment in cryogenic temperature. This paper proposes two types of insulation design to carry out the maximum insulation design for 154 kV-class HT cable. The proposed insulation design method takes into consideration AC and lightning impulse withstand voltage so as to prevent AC breakdown for power frequency operating voltage during operating the cable and breakdown for lightning impulse voltage. The final insulation thickness is determined by selecting high value out of two insulation thickness calculated through the two insulation design methods. And we researched electrical insulation characteristics of HTS cable according to bending ratio and the number of bending.

  • This paper describes a cause of fire accidents on power system for DC electric traction vehicles. We investigated fire scene of power line for DC electric traction vehicles. From analysis results, the cause of fire on power line turned out line to ground fault between a feeder of electric power services(pantagraph) and DC electric traction vehicle roof. Fire accidents of DC electric traction vehicles be assumed that electric sparks had been produced between the pantagraph and the power line conductor by repetitively making contact and separation, maybe if some material like branches get in between connecting rod it make progress line to ground fault. ZnO arresters are widely used to protect DC electric traction vehicles against overvoltages caused by lightning or switching surges. However, the arresters are deteriorated by commercial frequency overvoltages and/or lightning one. Deteriorated arresters could lead power failures, such as line to ground fault by a thermal runaway resulting from the increases in leakage current even in a nominal power system voltage. The power failures, such as line to ground fault would be causative of the fire accidents.

  • The cost incurred by voltage sag effect in power networks has always been of important concern for discussions. Due to the environmental constraints, fossil fuel shortage crisis and low efficiency of conventional power plants, decentralized generation and renewable based DG have become trends in recent decades; because DGs can reduce the voltage sag effect in distribution networks noticeably; therefore, optimum allocation of DGs in order to maximize their effectiveness is highly important in order to maximize their effectiveness. In this paper, a new method is proposed for calculating the cost incurred by voltage sag effect in power networks. Thus, a new objective function is provided that comprehends technical standards as minimization of the cost incurred by voltage sag effect, active power losses and economic criterion as the installation and maintenance costs of DGs. Considering operational constraints of the system, the optimum allocation of DGs is a constrained optimization problem in which Lightning Attachment procedure optimization (LAPO) is used to resolve it and is the optimum number, size and location of DGs are determined in IEEE 33 bus test system and IEEE 34 bus test system. The results show that optimum allocation of DGs not only reduces the cost incurred by voltage sag effect, but also improves the other characteristics of the system.

  • This paper deals with the frequency-dependent ground impedance of ground grids combined with the carbon ground electrodes. Ground grids are generally valid for multipurpose grounding systems as well as lightning protection systems. The carbon ground electrodes may be supplementarily used to reduce the high frequency ground impedance and to improve the transient response to surge currents. The frequency-dependent ground impedances of ground grids combined with or without the carbon ground electrodes were measured and their simulations with due regard to frequency-dependent soil resistivity were implemented by using EMTP program and Matlab modeling. As a consequence, the ground impedance of ground grids combined with the carbon ground electrodes is significantly reduced when the test current is injected at the terminal of the carbon ground electrode. The measured and simulated data for the test ground grids fairly agree with each other. It was found that the proposed method of simulating the frequency-dependent ground impedance is distinguished. The simulation techniques of predicting accurately the ground impedances without actual measurements can be used in the design of grounding systems based on ground grids and the carbon ground electrodes.

  • This paper discusses the effect according to the change of grounding system modeling in substation. Substation grounding system is modelled by CDEGS and EMTP. Node voltages of grounding system is variously analysed by 3 grounding cases and 4 kinds of transient frequency ranges. The results of this paper will contribute to advance the grounding system modeling of substation in the range of high frequency transient such as lightning surge.

  • The role of SVL (Sheath voltage limiter) in cable system is to protect the PVC(or PE) jacket in case of transient overvoltage resulting from lightning and other causes. But, in Korea, there is so many SVL failure cases resulting from power frequency overvoltage. So, the paper investigates the phenomenon of failure SVL comparing with other countries' system. Finally, the installation of ECC(Earth Connectivity Conductor) in under ground cable system is presented to remove the possibilities of SVL thermal runaway due to the power frequency overvoltage.

  • This paper aims to find out the statistical characteristics of the railroad accidents by weather phenomena. For this, It is investigated occurrence frequency of railroad accidents and operation obstacles from 1996 to 2008 in Korea using the KROIS data and Korea railroad accidents reports. The results are as follows; The occurrence frequency of railroad accidents and operation obstacles decrease gradually, and most of railroad accidents is a railroad traffic accidents. The amount of damages by a railroad weather-related accidents is higher than the one of the railroad accidents and operation obstacles. Weather events which is influenced the railroad weather-related accidents and incidents are rainfall, snowfall, lightning, strong winds. And they have occurred a railroad weather-related accidents and incidents, such as rail obstruction, signal failure, and power supply failure.
