A study on the direct effect of lightning on structures and systems of aircraft (항공기의 구조물과 시스템에 대한 낙뢰직접영향에 관한 연구)

  • Statistical data show that a large aircraft(transport category) is struck by lightning once a year or once per 1,000 ~ 20,000 flight time. The protection design for lightning must be applied to the aircraft because an aircraft is developed on condition that it is absolutely struck by lightning. For the proper protection design, we need to understand direct effect and indirect effect of lightning. This paper described the direct effect of lightning on aircraft's structures and systems.

  • Recently, the incidence of lightning in Korea has been increasing more and more. The damage caused by lightning is also getting worse. Lightning protection system is a prerequisite, not a sufficient condition. Considering the characteristics of lightning, there is a high frequency of lightning strikes in highlands. So, high grades of LPS should be applied to ground facilities of anti-aircraft weapons systems. 4-Level LPS was applied on groung facilities of anti-aircraft weapons system based on lightning incidence rate in past. There are some possibilities of damage from lightning in anti-aircraft weapons system. So, we have to readjust the LPS level with grounding, lightning rods and surge protect device based on lightning incidence rate in now days. Propose 2-level LPS and design with lightning rods, surge protector, separated grounding in this paper.

  • The installation of lightning protection system has recently been increasing, but the amount of damage has still been increasing. In this study, survey (interview) and field conditions were conducted to identify the installation and safety standards of the lightning protection system. it was analyzed that the safety management system is non-existent at the stage of the design, manufacturing and construction of the site lightning protection system, and that the safety inspection of the lightning protection facility is not properly managed. It has been shown that lightning protection systems, that can solve these problems, need to be re-established according to the reality so that safety inspection can be carried out in accordance with safety standards such as management of safety certification products, operation of survey institutions, design, manufacturing, and construction of safety standards at a national level.

  • This study evaluated the impedance characteristics of earth termination system and developed a variable frequency-typed inverter (measuring tool) for the utilization in ground design for lightning protection. The variable-frequency-typed inverter were composed of rectification part, voltage adjuster, IGBT controller and measuring part. Meanwhile, the square wave signal of variable frequency converted its frequency up to lightning surge band by using an IGBT after rectifying an alternating current (AC). It conducted performance evaluation of ground impedance of actual earth termination system by using the developed measuring tool for ground impedance and confirmed that such impedance-oriented performance evaluation was effective in the design of lightning protection.

  • The effects of surge arresters for protection of transmission systems against direct lightning strokes have already been investigated using the digital simulation program EMTP. Distribution lines are spanned on a much large area as compared to transmission lines, and therefore, are more often susceptible to lightning strokes. This paper analyzes the overvoltages on underground cable system against direct lightning strokes to the overhead ground wire using the digital simulation. The effects of lightning protection methods, such as lowering the grounding resistance and installing the surge arrester, for preventing overvoltages on underground cable system caused by direct lightning strokes to the overhead ground wire is investigated. Several schemes have been proposed to protect underground cables. This paper summarizes the main results of a study aimed at analysis of lightning overvoltages in variety underground feeders protected by metal-oxide arresters. This study will provide insulation coordination methods for reasonable system design in 22.9kV underground cable system.

  • The effects of surge arresters for protection of transmission systems against direct lightning strokes have already been reviewed using Electromagnetic Transients Program(EMTP). Distribution lines are spanned in much larger area than transmission lines, and therefore, are more susceptible to lightning strokes. We have modelled the 22.9kV underground distribution cable systems that have arresters and grounding wires. And this paper analyzes the overvoltages on underground distribution cable systems when direct lightning strokes strike on the overhead grounding wire using EMTP. Then we investigated that (1) the effects of lightning stroke according to underground distribution cable length (2) voltages at the riser pole and at the cable terminal according to installation of arrester. This study will provide insulation coordination methods for reasonable systems design in 22.9kV underground distribution cable systems.

  • In this paper, we introduce measures designed content for RTCA DO-160 F, Section 22 tests performed to verify the effects of indirect lightning and testing process of the test was carried out in the multi-purpose display certification process. This is referred to as indirect effects of lightning capability of an aircraft having electrical electronic equipment failure or damage to bring lightning induced voltages. In order to protect the avionics from lightning indirect effects of these aircraft are analyzing the effects of lightning strikes on aircraft and aircraft systems and interior design needs protection against the threat on their part. In this paper, we introduce RTCA DO-160 F, component selection process according to Section 22 category selection method and the selected level for determining the level of such measures for protection against lightning of multipurpose display for this aircraft. It also introduces the actual test process to confirm that the designed effectiveness of the selected part. We expect a good example of the lightning planned for future development of measures designed avionics through each step of the process introduced this.

  • Before avionics equipment are installed in aircraft, several environmental tests such as temperature, vibration, lightning, fire etc. must be conducted. One of the environmental tests is to substantiate protection designs of lightning indirect effect. It can be showed through RTCA DO-160G, section22 "Lightning Induced Transient Susceptibility" test. An additional test of aircraft level is required as well after installation of avionics equipment.

  • Free-standing structures that are especially high are more likely to receive brain attacks caused by lightning. Since special structures are generally part of national industrial structures, lightning strikes mostly cause socio-economic damage. Lightning protection facilities are installed to prevent such lightning damage, but in 2015, support cables on West Sea bridges were hit by lightning, causing a lot of economic damage. Accordingly, the design of a lightning protection system shall establish protective measures after analyzing the risk of debris falling onto the structure. In this thesis, lightning strikes are analyzed directly in relation to the modeling system that operates the actual information collection system for lightning strikes, depending on the location of the tall, free-standing structures, and practical lightning hazard information is provided by a meteorological station. In addition, we propose monitoring and applying a probability correction rate to the calculation of the lightning risk based on the number of lightning strikes directly reaching the ground in order to obtain an effective lightning risk assessment.

  • This paper presented problems occurred in design and construction of LPS(Lightning Protection System) based on the new KS(Korea Standard), and proposed various solution for those. Imperfect KS, poor data on lightning characters in Korea lack of train for engineer, immature SPD engineering and absence of LPS design sample for various buildings are main problems. We suggested that comprehensive measures attending every persons and organizations relevant LPS are needed to solve the problems.
