  • Since the users have direct access to search and browse freely, the open access system has been employed to all the usual modern libraries. However, library space shortage problem created by the continuously increasing printed materials caused the degradation of usability and quality of the library space. Open Access system is superior in user convenience but is inferior in space efficiency. Keeping the open access system is considered as one of the reasons of the space shortage problem. Even though the closed access system does not provide free access or easy browsing for the uses, it's space efficiency is much higher than the open access system. The closed access system should be employed as a plan to relieve space shortage problem. Since the closed access system does not allow the public direct access to books, it is very economical. It also provides much better space efficiency with higher book shelving density. In this article, closed access library system models and their characteristics are examined as the reduction plans for the library space shortage problems.

  • Korean academic libraries are facing serious space shortage problems due to an inability to accommodate for the rapidly increasing number of printed materials. Despite the current situation, Korean academic libraries have largely focused on impractical applications of the new library paradigm, using technology or management programs to improve the quality of research and learning environments of the university. However, such improvements would be fruitless without first resolving the space shortage crisis. In order to make realistic improvements to the quality of academic libraries, this study used questionnaires to employ the opinions of librarians currently practicing at such Korean libraries. Survey questionnaires about types and causes of space shortage problems, library facility expansion plans, expected effects of expansion, frequency of and reasons for furniture relocation, and tight spaces needing improvement were distributed to selected 4-year college librarians through Google Drive. Analysis of survey responses indicated that library space shortage was largely responsible for the hindrance of research and learning environments. Furthermore, it reflected the urgency to secure book storage space.

  • Due to an inability to accommodate for the rapidly increasing number of printed materials, Korean academic libraries are facing serious space shortage problems. Very few academic institutions have the funds to expand existing libraries or construct new facilities in order to accommodate the influx of printed materials. Despite not having the luxury to create new space, many establishments continue to implement the open access system. Seeing that such a system is only user friendly when used in a spacious facility, the maintenance of the open access system is unreasonable. Only few libraries consider the space efficient closed access system which helps to resolve storage space shortage. In the current state of the problem, improving the efficiency to which books are stored in existing storage areas within a library facility is the only appropriate solution. Enacting methods to improve physical space utilization within a fixed volume library facility will undoubtedly diminish the space shortage issue at hand. In this article, several space efficiency improvement approaches are discussed. Methods of book storage plan re-layout (floor, plan, ceiling, height, bookshelf design), book arrangement possibilities, and the reduction of the physical volume of reserved materials are each examined.

  • Because the effort to solve space shortage in academic libraries has never been successful, the rapid development of digital technology is being considered as a panacea to revolutionize analog libraries and to open a new era for digital libraries. However, this technology is yet to be perfected. Even with the use of digital technology, we are currently still looking for more space to accommodate newly printed materials and at the same time store valuable resources that are seldomly used. In 1985, Harvard adopted the industrial high-density shelving system into their library. No other retrieving system has proven to be more successful as the Harvard model. Presently, more than 50 colleges have built over 70 high-density library storage facilities. Rice University Library Service Center (RLSC) can be examined as an example of the Harvard-model. This paper will focus on assessing the operating system and architectural requirements of the RLSC which may allow for a more efficient, economical, and fundamental resolution to the library space shortage problem.

  • According to the Korean Library Act, a regional representative library is fully responsible for the integrated management of all collections held by local libraries. It intends to resolve space problem for collections and to prepare room for new materials in local libraries. Under the Act, a regional representative library should make a plan for a regional repository library to accomodate overflows from local library collections as soon as possible. The purpose of this study is to figure out the meanings of 'regional repository library' as a cooperative storage facility of local library collections, and to suggest the proper solutions for developing a regional repository library with case of Busan metropolitan city. To the end, this study (1) examined the extent of space shortage in local libraries of Busan, (2) assessed the needs of both local libraries and library users for a regional repository library, and finally, (3) suggested the detailed procedure and methods for establishing and managing a regional repository library in Busan metropolitan city.

  • The purpose of this study is to seek the solutions for development of young adults programs in the public libraries in Korea. The reasons for the problems and limitations of the young adults programs are the absence of personnel in charge of young adult service, the shortage in book stock and space, the low participation due to the educational environment pursuing only entrance examination, the poor system in public relations and the cooperation with young adult related organization etc. As the result of seeking solutions for the development of young adults programs in the public libraries based on these problems, followings are required: the establishment of young adults service system, placement of personnel in charge, the development of integrated young adult programs, strengthening of education for librarians in charge, and the establishment of young adult service network.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the current status of university library operation through the five laws of library science and suggest ways to improve it. To this end, the operation status of four national and public university libraries was analyzed with the scope of the study as the Busan area. Furthermore, for an in-depth investigation, the P University library in Busan was examined as a case. The operation status of national and public university libraries in the Busan region was analyzed by dividing them into the categories of university library collection materials, facilities, staff, material purchase costs, and users from 2018 to 2022. In particular, there was a decrease in users and a shortage of librarians due to COVID-19. In the case study, the operation status of P University library was investigated focusing on the first and fifth laws of Ranganathan's five laws of library science. In the first law, the study was conducted on the aspects of access to and use of the collection, library location, usage time and book lending, and staff. In the fifth law, the investigation was divided into service improvement aspects according to changes in digital technology of P University library and library environment improvement aspects according to changes in user characteristics. As a result of the study, 'establishment of library space composition strategy', 'establishment of blue ocean strategy', and 'expansion of recruitment and deployment of librarians' were suggested as improvement plans.

  • This study is to find out general problems a n.0, ppeared in the management and utilization of these and dissertation and to suggest some recommendations, through the survey and analysis on the Korean university libraries. Questionnaires were sent to 109 university libraries which offer master's and doctoral degrees, during the period between March 7 and March 27, 1995. Responded questionnaires of 91 libraries (about 83%) were processed using SAS. The results of this survey can be summarized as follows: 1. Most of Korean university libraries have the collections of theses and dissertations ranging from less than 10,000 volumes (27 libraries ; 32.1%) ; 10,000 to 30,000 volumes (20 libraries ; 25.0%) ; to more than 80,000 volumes (16 libraries ; 19.0%). The largest collection was around 200,000 volumes. 2. In the management of them, 35 libraries (38.5%) were active in collecting them, but 56 libraries (61.5%) were not active, mainly for the shortage of manpower and the space problems. In 62.6% of libraries, they are arranged with the books. And 51.3% of libraries process them in less than one month. 46 libraries (52.9%) computerize their system, and among them 40 libraries (87%) establish their own databases. 3. The collections of theses and dissertations are called by various name, including periodical room, theses room, reference reading room etc. reaching to 15 kinds. 71 libraries (78.0%) adopt open system, and 17 libraries closed system ; and 2 libraries (3.2%) partial open system. 62 libraries (68.1%) arrange them in the order of call number, while 20 libraries (31.9%) by other criteria.
