  • In order to select superior trees based on fruit characteristics and provide basic informations necessary for their improvement, total 107 individual trees of Sorbus alnifolia (Sieb. et Zucc.) K. Koch were selected from 11 wild populations in South Korea. After collecting normal fruit branch, we investigated morphological characteristics of fruit and then considered its relationship among the 11 populations by multivariate analysis method. Results from principal compound analysis showed that it represented 85.8% accumulated explanation from five principal compounds. According to cluster analysis based on fruit characteristics, the natural S. alnifolia populations were classified into four groups and Mt. Mani population was different from other populations. Selection effect with outstanding candidate trees including superior 5 individual trees (Gwangyo 1, Gwangyo 2, Deogyu 7, Mani 29, Mani 30) was estimated at 122.8%, 115.5% and 182.7% in fruit width, length and yield per fruit bunch, respectively. The object of this results will give us invaluable information about breeding by selection of S. alnifolia in south Korea.

  • In chemical industry plants, the raw material, intermediate and final products can leak from unstable joints of flanges and valves as well as cracks of storage tanks. From the safety and economic standpoints, it is very important to understand whether leaks or not and leakage rate. The OGI(optical gas image) technique can tell gas leakages, but cannot give the leakage rate. Some special OGI devices can show the kind of gas in different color concentration in different darkness. Therefore the research on quantification of OGI is necessary. In this research, we have developed the practical method to quantify OGI of methane leakage. To estimate 3-dimensional gas leakages distribution from 2-dimensional OGI, the Monte Carlo Probability technique was applied. First the number of points in the area of width(2.54 cm) and length(2.54 cm) in OGI was counted. Total no of each experiment was compared with the measured flow rate. The correlation average between total points and measured flow rate was found to be 0.980. Reversely we estimated the leakage rate of OGI by use of the correlation table. The results showed good agreement between the estimation value and the measured value.

  • Traffic accident forecasting model has been developed steadily to understand factors affecting traffic accidents and to reduce them. In Korea, the length of highways is over 3,000km, and it is within the top ten in the world. However, the number of accidents-per-one kilometer highway is higher than any other countries. The rapid increase of travel demand and transportation infrastructures since 1980's may influence on the high rates of traffic accident. Accident severity is one of the important indices as well as the rate of accident and factors such as road geometric conditions, driver characteristics and type of vehicles may be related to traffic accident severity. However, since all these factors are interacted complicatedly, the interactions are not easily identified. A structural equations model is adopted to capture the complex relationships among variables. In the model estimation, we use 2,880 accident data on highways in Korea. The SEM with several factors mentioned above as endogenous and exogenous variables shows that they have complex and strong relationships.

  • In this study, 2-D seepage analysis is conducted for the evaluation of Box-Culvert installation, Cut-off Wall Length, permeability reduction of soil under the Box-Culvert effects on Levee Box-Culvert safety. The result of analysis it is obtained that the safety of seepage and slope stability of levee is declined by the installation of Box-Culver. And also obtained that the piping from poor compaction and cavity around Box-Culvert Is Prevented by the Cut-off wall installation below breast wall and levee toe, so it is recommended that the Cut-off Wall below breast wall and levee toe must be installed. And the Cut-off Wall installed below levee center is considered when the safety of piping is declined for the whole levee section. On the other hand, for the realistic analysis it is recommended that the 3-D seepage analysis is more suitable for the safety evaluation of Box-Culvert installed levee when it is considered that the saturated field is dispersed to the ground.

  • An estimation has been made for inventories and characteristics of spent nuclear fuel(SNF) to be generated from existing and planned nuclear power plants based on the 3rd Basic Plan for Electric Power Demand and Supply. The characteristics under consideration in this study are dimensions, a fuel rod array, a weight, $^{235}U$ enrichment, and the discharge burnup in terms of fuel assembly. These are essentially needed for designing a pyroprocessing facility. It is appeared that the anticipated quantity by the end of 2077 is about 23,000 tU for PWR spent nuclear fuel. It is revealed that the proportion of SNF with the initial $^{235}U$ enrichment below 4.5 weight percent(wt.%) is approximately 95 % in total. For SNF with 16$\times$16 fuel rod array the proportion is expected approximately 74% in total. It appears that the average burnup of SNF will be 55 GWd/tU after the medium and/or latter part of 2010s while the average burnup is 45 GWd/tU at present. Finally, a requirement in terms of reference SNF for designing the pyroprocessing facility has been derived from the above-mentioned results. The anticipated SNF seems to be 16$\times$16 Korean Standard Fuel Assembly with a cross section of 21.4 cm$\times$21.4 cm, a length of 453 cm, a mass of 672 kg, the initial $^{235}U$ enrichment of 4.5 wt.%, and the discharge burnup of 55 GWd/tU.

  • Egg production of Acartia steueri was estimated in llkwang Bay, located in the southeastern coast of Korea. The equation, combining fecundity, temperature and chlorophyll a, obtained under the laboratory experiments, was applied to the in situ temperature and chlorophyll a for the estimation of field egg production. Mean egg size was $80.52{\mu}m$. Prosome length of adult females was not correlated with egg size. Egg production of field population ranged from 0.32 to $63.32{\mu}gC\;m^{-3}d^{-1}$ with a mean of $13.33{\mu}gC\;m^{-3}d^{-1}$, which were equivalent to $7.1\~1407.1\;eggs\;m^{-3}d^{-1}$ and $296.1\;eggs\;m^{-3}d^{-1}$, respectively. Fecundity of adult females ranged from 5.4 to $12.5\;eggs\;female^{-1}d{-1}$ with a mean of $8\;eggs\;female^{-1}d^{-1}$. Specific egg production rates ranged from 0.028 to 0.117 $d^{-1}$ with a mean of 0.064 $d^{-1}$. Considering the egg Production ($\%$ female body carbon) as a function of temperature and chlorophlrll a concentration, our results showed rather low fecundity, which might be underestimated. Probable cannibalism of egg by the adults were thought to be pan of the reason for this low estimated fecundity.

  • The abalone shell (Haliotis) is one of the most important resources for the coastal fisheries and it is popular as an aquacultural species. Proper cultivating grounds for mid-term nursery of abalone spats are required before releasing them. It is difficult for us to find good enough aquacultural grounds to rear abalone spats to 20"30mm of shell length. Therefore, we need to study a practical and effective new type of aquacultural device for the nursing of abalone spats by using open sea areas. We can find this kind of studies from 'Marine aya No. 1' of Japan, Though they focused on the easy operation, safe working and low operating cost, it involves so much initial cost that it is difficult for us to justify such expenditure. However, with a modified small buoy system, this submersible facility needs only a horizontal frame to fulfill its essential function and the vortical part can be removed. The working boat equipped with a pump can operate this facility to keep it submerged or floated. This paper deals with the possibility of this submersible fishery facility for the mid term nursing of abalone spats in the open sea. A small version of this system to ensure low initial cost is suggested and wave and current forces were calculated for the estimation of the weight of the mooring anchor.

  • This study evaluated the runoff data collected at 12 stream gauge stations of the Chungjoo dam basin using the IHACRES model. Especially, the geomorphology-related parameters of the IHACRES model could be quantified base on the regionalization technique, which have also been applied many stream gauge stations of the Chungjoo dam basin. Summarizing the results is as follows. (1) The climate-related parameters of the IHACRES model c, $\tau_w{^0}$, and f are found to be estimated and used uniformly over the basin. (2) The geomorphology-related parameters of the IHACRES model $t_q,\;t_s,\;and\;v_s$ are found to be estimated by considering the geomorphological parameters like the basin area, channel length, channel slope, basin slope through the regionalization based on the regression analysis. (3) Using the climate-related parameters applied uniformly over the basin and the geomorphology-related parameters estimated based on the regionalization procedure for each stream gauge station, a total of 12 stream gauge stations have been evaluated with their stream flow measurements. As results, the Sanganmi and Youngwal 1 stream gauge stations have been found to make high quality flow data, but Youngwal, Baekokpo, and Panwoon stations low quality flow data. On the whole, 12 stream gauge stations considered show large differences with their data quality, so a plan for securing more consistent data quality should be prepared imminently.

  • An important problem in frequency analysis is the estimation of the quantile for a certain return period. In frequency analysis an assumed probability distribution is fitted to the observed sample data to estimate the quantile at the upper tail corresponding to return periods which are usually much larger than the record length. In most cases, the selection of an appropriate probability distribution is based on goodness of fit tests. The goodness of fit test method can be described as a method for examining how well sample data agrees with an assumed probability distribution as its population. However it gives generally equal weight to differences between empirical and theoretical distribution functions corresponding to all the observations. In this study, the modified Anderson-Darling (AD) test statistics are provided using simulation and the power study are performed to compare the efficiency of other goodness of fit tests. The power test results indicate that the modified AD test has better rejection performances than the traditional tests. In addition, the applications to real world data are discussed and shows that the modified AD test may be a powerful test for selecting an appropriate distribution for frequency analysis when extreme cases are considered.

  • This study was carried out to clarify the impact of land use (Castanea crenata, Pinus densiflora and Plantation Land) on soil runoff in small watershed. The soil runoff showed in order of plantation land, Castanea stand and Pinus stand. The resulting models in linear equations of three stands were able to account for 70%, 60% and 60% respectively. The relationship between soil runoff and forest environmental factors was a positive correlation at 1% level with slope, forest type, soil hardness, watershed area, stream length and at 5% level with accumulative rainfall, but was negative correlation at 1% level with coverage. The main factors that affected soil runoff in small watershed showed in order of coverage, accumulative rainfall and stand type. In the stepwise regression between soil runoff and forest environmental factors, the estimation equation is as follow; Y = 31.250 - 1.140(Coverage) + 0.413(Accumulative rainfall) + 20.829(Forest type). The results indicates that dangerous areas of landslide and soil runoff by land use could be applied to the mitigation measures such as afforestation, erosion check dam and revetment for erosion control and water quality management in small watershed.
