Sooty leaf blight disease of Cymbium spp. was observed on orchid fields located at Gyeonggi-do in 2005-2006. Symptoms of the disease appeared on leaves and leaf spots were circular to nearly-circular, these circular blemished were yellow, with greater amounts of brown to black flecks forming as the spots enlarge. Severely infected leaves were dry and defoliated. These symptoms were realized wrongly as symptoms by virus. But Pseudocercospora cymbidiicola were isolated from the diseased plants. Conidiophores were produced on the lesion surface of the leaf with the blemished areas andconidia formed dark brown, cylindrical and straight to slightly curved, 5-9 septate, $23.7-85.0\;{\times}\;2.0-3.4\;{\mu}m$. Mycelial growth was mostly slow on potato dextrose agar and the optimum temperature for growth was $25^{\circ}C$. We were identified as Pseudocercoepora cymbidiicola based on the morphological characteristics.
In order to determine the specific active oxygen species directly related to chlorophyll bleaching in the leaf-burning disease, we investigated the effects of singlet oxygen (1O2), superoxide radical (O2-), and hydrogen Peroxide (H2O2) on isolated chloroplast suspension and leaf discs from Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer. When the singlet oxygen was added to the chloroplast suspension, the chlorophyll and carotenoid contents were decreased by more than 809), similar to treatment with high light intensity (100 KLux). We assumed that the conversion of dioxygen (O2) produced either in photolysis or in breakdown of hydrogen peroxide to singlet oxygen resulted from photorespiration. On the basis of these experiments , :he inhibitory effects of active oxygen scavengers propylgallic acid (PGA), 2,5-ditetrabutyl hydroquinon (DBH), sodium pyrosulfate (SPS), and ascorbic acid (ABS) were examined. In chloroplast suspension all four scavengers inhibited chlorophyll bleaching by more than 75fl , and in the leaf discs the inhibition rates of SPS, PGA and ABS were 46%, 51%, and 96% respectively.
Isolates of the rice blast fungus show a range of tissue-specificities infecting leaves, nodes, neck and panicles. Although neck and panicle blast cause significantly greater yield losses than the leaf blast, virulence tests of the blast isolates have been performed only rice leaves instead of neck and panicles. In this study, we have developed a virulence test method for neck and panicle blast. We selected three representative isolates from each of leaf, neck, and panicle blast. We observed that severe disease lesions developed on the neck and the panicles when the infected rice plants were incubated in a dew chamber for 48 h instead of 24 h when tested on leaves. Unlike the leaf blast, a typical lesion on the neck and panicles appeared after 14 days post-infection as opposed to 7 days with leaf blast. This method will be applied to examine tissue-specificity of the rice blast fungus isolates.
Four newly developed cotton mutants (M-111, M-7662, M-358 and M-218) were compared for their resistance against Cotton leaf curl virus(CLCuV) together with commercial resistant (CIM-443, CIM-482, CIM-473, FH-900 and FH-901) and susceptible (5-12) varieties by artificial inoculation through grafting and under natural field conditions. Infectivity and success of grafting were 100% in all cases. None of the grafted plants were found immune or asymptomatic. All the grafted mutants and most of their single plant progeny rows (SPPRs) showed highly resistant responses as the symptoms displayed by these mutants were milder than the commercial cultivars. Grafted mutants also had delayed disease reactions as they took more time (25-30 days) to produce disease symptoms, as compared with resistant commercial varieties that produced disease 18-22 days after inoculation. Growth of the grafted SPPRs of tested mutants was normal, which is an indication that there will be no production losses. Observations under natural infestation of whitefly showed that two SPPRs of M-ll/CE and M-7662-1/2 and one resistant variety CIM-443 exhibited slight incidence of disease, while one SPPR of M-l1/59 and S-12 were moderately susceptible and highly susceptible with 21% and 97.l% disease incidence, respectively. This study also showed that plants displaying more disease symptoms through grafting were easily infected under natural conditions. These results suggest that preference should be given to those plants that exhibited highly resistant responses after artificial inoculation.
Exserohilum turcicum is a fungus that causes northern corn leaf blight (NCLB) and has deleterious effects on maize production globally. Therefore, it is prudent to mitigate the effects of NCLB using genetic diversity. The objective of this research was to assess the severity of NCLB disease on the growth and yield of various maize genotypes. A randomized complete block design field experiment, replicated three times, was conducted to evaluate the effect of E. turcicum on 10 maize hybrids. Percent disease index, plant height, and leaf area were recorded at the silk stage. Cob weight, grain fresh weight, and grain yields were determined at harvest maturity. All measured parameters were significantly different (P<0.05) between the maize hybrids. Of the 10 genotypes, four (PAN 4R-528R, PAN 4R-728BR, PAN 3R-724BR, and P1788BR) were susceptible, five (DKC74-74BR, PAN 5R-582R, PAN 5R-890R, PAN 5R-854R, and PAN 5R-590R) were moderately susceptible, and one (DKC80-40BR) was moderately resistant. DKC80-40BR exhibited greater cob weight, while DKC74-74BR was superior in all other plant growth and yield components. Interestingly, although not significant (P>0.05) and high, maize growth and yield parameters had negative correlations with disease incidence, except for grain fresh weight. Therefore, DKC80-40BR may be selected for cultivation in areas prone to NCLB to reduce maize susceptibility to the disease, while DKC74-74BR may improve crop performance. These hybrids could be considered as potential sources of resistance or tolerance to NCLB for further validation by plant breeders.

In 2016, a severe leaf spot disease was found on Iris ensata Thumb. in Nanjing, China. The symptom was elliptical, fusiform, or irregularly necrotic lesion surrounded by a yellow halo, from which a small-spored Alternaria species was isolated. The fungus was identified as Alternaria iridiaustralis based on morphological characteristics. The pathogenicity tests revealed that the fungus was the causal pathogen of the disease. Phylogenic analyses using sequences of ITS, gpd, endoPG, and RPB2 genes confirmed the morphological identification. This study is the first report of A. iridiaustralis causing leaf spots on I. ensata in China.
Yellow spot or blotch symptoms on the upper surface of leaf, without the production of velvet-like fungi on the lower surface of leaf as in the gray mold of tomato caused by Cladosporium fulvum, were observed in tomato (cv. Seokwang) plants in May, 1995, in a vinyl-house of the experimental plot of Gyeongnam Provincial Rural Development Administration, Chinju, Gyeongnam, Korea. We identified this disease as powdery mildew of tomato caused by Oidiopsis taurica (L v.) Arnaud (=Leveillula taurica), which was new to Korea. Conidia of the fungus were borne on uni- or bi-septated conidiophores which were developed through the stomata of the tomato leaf. The conidia were slender, clavate and variable in size (31~111.6$\times$13.1 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$). The fungal conidia isolated from tomato leaves were inoculated to tomato plants, and the occurrence of the same disease was confirmed based on the symptomatology and the morphology of the pathogen reisolated.

Diseases caused by Pepper yellow leaf curl virus infection is considered to be emerging plant diseases in Indonesia in the last five years. One key factor for disease management is the availability of accurate detection of the virus in plants. Polyclonal antibody for Pepper yellow leaf curl Indonesia virus-Bogor (PYLCIV-Bgr) was produced for detection of the virus using I-ELISA and DIBA methods. The antibody was able to detect PYLCIV-Bgr from infected plants up to dilution 1/16,384 and cross reaction was not observed with Cucumber mosaic virus (CMV), Tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), and Chilli veinal mottle virus (ChiVMV). Positive reaction was readily detected in membrane containing Begomovirus samples from Yogyakarta (Kaliurang and Kulonprogo) and West Java (Bogor and Segunung). Infection of PYLCIV-Bgr in chillipepper, tomato, and Ageratum conyzoides was also confirmed using polyclonal antibody for PYLCIV-Bgr in DIBA. Polyclonal antibody for PYLCIV-Bgr is suggested to be included in disease management approach due to its good detection level.
Incidence of blast caused by Pyricularia grisea Sacc. on 21 leading cultivars and elite lines of rice was investigated in different locations such as Icheon, Chuncheon, Jecheon, and Naju during three years from 1991 to 1993. Disease index of leaf blast of Dongjinbyeo was high in the blast nursery with range 4 to 9 at Naju, but low at other locations with range 1 to 4. Percentages of diseased leaf area of Joryungbyeo and Daelipbyeo 1 were 4.3 and 12%, respectively in the fields at Jecheon in 1993, but were much lower in the other locations during three years. The incidences of leaf blast of Daelipbyeo 1 were 0.3 and 12.0% at Chuncheon and Jecheon, respectively in 1993, but no disease occurred at Naju during three years. Percentage of diseased panicles of Joryungbyeo was 100% at Icheon and Jecheon in 1993, 92.4% in Suweon 390 at Icheon on 1991 and 100% in Jinbu 15 at Jecheon on 1993. Race distribution of rice blast fungus at Icheon and Jecheon was more varied than that of the other locations.
Leaf spot of Amelanchier asiatica was observed in Korea.. The major symptoms of the disease were small necrotic spots and severe early defoliation. On the basis of morphological characteristics of the fungus observed from naturally infected leaves, the causal organism was identified as Entomosporium mespili (DC. : Duby) Sacc. The conidial suspension prepared from sporulating lesions was sprayed on healthy leaves with or without wounding to prove pathogenicity of the fungus. Small spots were noticed tow days after inoculation, and acervuli containing numerous conidia were observed 7 and 10 days after inoculation from wounded and unwounded leaves, respectively. This is the first record of the disease on A. asiatica in Korea.
