  • This study was conducted to remove organics and nutrients using 2 stage intermittent aeration reactor. First reactor, using suspended microbial growth in intermittent aeration instead of anaerobic reactor in the typical BNR process, used minimum carbon source to release P, and it was possible to reduce ammonia loading going to second reactor. In the second reactor, using moving media intermittent aeration, it was effective to reduce nitrate in non-aeration time by attached microorganisms having long retention time. In aeration time, nitrification and P uptake were taken place simultaneously. From the experiment, two major results were as follows. First, the removal of organics was more than 90%, and optimum aeration/non-aeration time ratio for organic removal was corresponded with aeration/non-aeration time ratio for nitrogen removal. Second, in the first reactor, optimum aeration/non-aeration time ratio was 15/75 (min.) because it was necessary to maintain 75 min. of non-aeration time to suppress of impediment of return nitrate and to lead release of phosphate. In the second reactor, optimum aeration/non-aeration time ratio was 45/90 (min.).

  • The use of different types of wastewater (WW) for the cultivation of microalgae and cyanobacteria during recent decades has provided important economic and environmental benefits. However, direct use of WW can lead to growth inhibition and biomass contamination. In the present study, we separated the key WW nutrients, namely nitrate and phosphate, by adsorption and regeneration and used the resulting regenerated water to cultivate the cyanobacterium Spirulina platensis. The adsorbent was granular γ-alumina derived from waste aluminum cans. This procedure recovered 19.9% of nitrate and 23.7% of phosphate from WW. The cyanobacterial cultures efficiently assimilated the nutrients from the medium prepared using regenerated WW, and the growth and nutrient uptake were similar to those in a synthetic medium. In addition, imposing nutrient limitations to increase carbohydrate productivity was easily achieved using regenerated wastewater nutrients, without requiring additional dilution or complex processing. In acute toxicity tests, the harvested biomass in a regenerated medium had similar toxicity levels compared to the biomass obtained from a synthetic medium. The proposed method of using regenerated WW to produce contamination-free biomass has broad potential applications.

  • Lead titanate ($PbTiO_3$) powder was prepared from lead nitrate ($Pb(NO_3)_2$) and titania ($TiO_2$) by hydrothermal route. Phase formation process was investigated by observing the phases formed in various experimental conditions like different KOH concentration, reaction temperature and time. $PbTiO_3$ powder was fabricated when the KOH concentration was 0.8M or higher. An intermediate compound, $PbTi_{0.8}O_{2.6}$, was formed at first by a reaction between PbO and $TiO_2$ and changed into $PbTiO_3$ powder with a perovskite crystal structure. A $PbTiO_3$ phase was formed in a shorter time when a KOH concentration was increased from 0.8M to 8M because a driving force for a $PbTiO_3$ formation was increased due to an increase in a degree of supersaturation. And $TiO_2$ (rutile) and $3PbO{\cdot}H_2O$ were observed at room temperature in a 0.8M KOH solution and $TiO_2$(rutile) and PbO (litharge) in a 8M KOH. A $PbTiO_3$phase was also formed in a shorter time at a higher reaction temperature as a reaction temperature influenced the rates for a dissolution and a precipitation.

  • Growth optima and tolerance ranges of marine algae species nay vary greatly during the developmental stage. The establishment stage is clearly of great importance for each generation, affecting the performance of the adult population. The present study was aimed to determine the effect of various concentrations of inorganic nutrients and heavy metals on germination and germlings of Ulva pertusa Kjellman (Chlorophyta). Percent germination increased rapidly as irradiance level increased, reaching the maximum at 100 ${\mu}$mol m$\^$-2/s$\^$-1/ in both east and west seawater. Percent germination in the east seawater was higher than that in the west seawater at irradiances lower than 30 ${\mu}$mol m$\^$-2/s$\^$-1/, and there was no difference in percent germination between the two different seawaters at irradiances higher than 60 ${\mu}$mol m$\^$-2/s$\^$-1/. Germling growth increased in the both cases with increasing irradiances but no growth was found in the dark. Overall germling area was larger in the east seawater than in the west seawater. Number of cell increased with increasing irradiance and became light-saturated at 100 ${\mu}$mol m$\^$-2/s$\^$-1/ in the both cases. Germlings grown in the east seawater had more cells than those cultivated in the west seawater at irradiances lower than 60 ${\mu}$mol m$\^$-2/s$\^$-1/. In various combinations of nitrate and phosphate, percent germination increased with increasing nitrate concentrations irrespective of phosphate concentrations. At 3 days after inoculation, nitrate concentration of 2.5 ppm with all phosphate concentrations promoted germination. Area and number of cell of germlings increased with increasing nitrate concentrations in all phosphate concentrations. In various combinations of copper and lead, germination was delayed as copper concentrations increased in all lead concentrations. Percent germination was severely reduced at 1 ppm Cu$\^$2+/. Area and number of cell of germlings decreased with increasing copper concentrations in all lead concentrations. The highest copper concentration (1 ppm) clearly suppressed the germling growth in U. pertusa.

  • A new, simple and fast flow injection analysis (FIA) method has been developed for the indirect determination of nitrite. The proposed indirect automatic method is based on the oxidation of nitrite to nitrate using a lead(IV) dioxide oxidant microcolumn where the flow of the sample through the microcolumn reduces the $PbO_2$ solid phase reagent to Pb(II), which is measured by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The absorbance of Pb(II) are proportional to the concentration of nitrite in the samples. The calibration curve was linear up to 30 mg $L ^{-1}$, with a detection limit of 0.11 mg $L ^{-1}$ for a 400 mL injected sample volume and a sampling rate of about 80 $h ^{-1}$. The results exhibit no interference from the presence of large amounts of ions. The developed procedure was found to be suitable for the determination of nitrite in foodstuffs and wastewaters. A relative standard deviation better than 0.9% was obtained in a repeatability study. The reliability of the method was established by parallel determination against the standard method.

  • Silver paste with low sintered temperature has been developed in order to apply electronic parts, such as bus electrode, address electrode in PDP (Plasma Display Panel) with large screen area. In this study, nano-sized silver particles with 10-30 nm were synthesized from silver nitrate ($AgNO_3$) solution by chemical reduction method and silver paste with low sintered temperature was prepared by mixing silver nanoparticles, conventional silver powder with the particle size 1.6 um and Pb-free frit. Conductive thick film from silver paste was fabricated by screen printing on alumina substrate. After firing at $540^{\circ}C$, the cross section and surface morphology of the thick films were analyzed by FE-SEM. Also, the sheet resistivity of the fired thick films was measured using the four-point technique.

  • High-density lead zirconate titanate(Pb(Zr$\_$0.53/Ti$\_$0.47/)O$_3$, PZT) ceramics were fabricated by a new milling-precipitation(MP) process improved from the conventional solid state process. This process was progressed by a milling impregnation through mixing ZrO$_2$ and TiO$_2$ powders with lead nitrate(Pb(NO$_3$)$_2$) water solution in zirconia ball media, and then milling precipitation was induced from precipitation of PbC$_2$O$_4$ by adding ammonium of oxalate monohydrate((NH$_4$)$_2$C$_2$O$_4$$.$H$_2$O) as a precipitant. As a result of this process, single-phase perovskite structure was formed at the calcination temperature of 750$\^{C}$ for Pb(Zr$\_$0.53/Ti$\_$0.47/)O$_3$ powders. In addition, the highest density at the sintering temperature of 1100$\^{C}$ was obtained, because of the highly sinterable PZT Powders ground through the re-milling process. Piezoelectric and dielectric properties of sintered sample were improved by MP process.

  • Nitrate contamination of groundwater is a wide-spread problem in both New Zealand and South Korea and has lead to eutrophication of receiving lakes and rivers. Denitrification in groundwater has the potential to reduce inputs of N to these receiving waters but quantification of the amount of denitrification taking place is difficult. A series of denitrification measurements have been carried out in the field at selected groundwater locations in New Zealand using a recently developed re-circulating well technique to increase sensitivity. This is an ongoing project and the methodology and sites are described and some preliminary results discussed. An overview of the collaborative research programme on in-situ groundwater processes (in which this denitrification project is a component) is provided.
