Thick composite laminated plates is considered in 3D finite-element. To consider continuity of transverse stresses and displacement field, mixed finite-element has been developed by using layerwise theory and the minimum potential energy principle. Mixed finite-element has been enforced through the thick direction, Z, of a laminated plate by considering six degree-of-freedoms per node. Six degree-of-freedoms are three displacement components in the coordinate axes directions and three transverse stress components ${\sigma}_z,\;{\tau}_{xz},\;{\tau}_{yz}$. The model maintain the fundamental elasticity relations that are stress-strain relation and displacement-strain relation, because the transverse stress components invoked as nodal degrees of freedom by using the fundamental elasticity relationship between th components of stress and displacement. Random vibration analysis of the model is performed by computing consistent mass matrix and computing covariance in frequency domain technique.

This paper investigates the problem of a crack approaching two circular holes in an orthotropic infinite plate. The stress intensity factors were obtained by using the modified mapping-collocation method. The present results show excellent agreement with existing solutions for a crack approaching two circular holes in an isotropic infinite plate. In the numerical examples, various types of cross-ply laminated composites were considered. To investigate the effect of orthotropy and geometry(d/R and a/(d-R)) on crack tip singularity, stress intensity factors were considered as functions of the normalized crack length. It is expected that the modified mapping-collocation method can be applied to the analysis of various kinds of cracks existing around the stress-concentration region of composite laminate.

In this paper, a simple tut accurate method of vibration analysis of structural elements with or without attached mass/masses is presented. The method used has been developed by the senior author since 1974. This method is very effective for the plates with arbitrary boundary conditions and irregular sections. This method is applied to the special orthotropic Plate with two opposite edges simply supported and the other two opposite edges free. Such plate represents the most of the simply supported bridges/decks, including concrete and girders-cross beam systems. Detailed illustration is given for beams and plates for easy understanding. Some laminate orientation for which the special orthotropic equations can be applied are identified.
A simply supported hybrid plate consisting of top and bottom functionally graded elastic layers and an intermediate actuating or sensing homogeneous piezoelectric layer is investigated by an elasticity (piezoelasticity) method, which is based on state space formulations. The general spring layer model is adopted to consider the effect of bonding adhesives between the piezoelectric layer and the two functionally graded ones. The two functionally graded layers are inhomogeneous along the thickness direction, which are approached by laminate models. The effect of interlaminar bonding imperfections on the static bending and free vibration of the smart plate is discussed in the numerical examples.
An object in the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) is affected by many environmental conditions unlike earth's surface such as, Atomic oxygen (AO), Ultraviolet Radiation (UV), thermal cycling, High Vacuum and Micrometeoroids and Orbital Debris (MMOD) impacts. The effect of all these parameters have to be carefully considered when designing a space structure, as it could be very critical for a space mission. Polybenzimidazole (PBI) is a high performance thermoplastic polymer that could be a suitable material for space missions because of its excellent resistance to these environmental factors. A thin coating of PBI polymer on the carbon epoxy composite laminate (referred as CFRP) was found to improve the energy absorption capability of the laminate in event of a hypervelocity impact. However, the overall efficiency of the shield also depends on other factors like placement and orientation of the laminates, standoff distances and the number of shielding layers. This paper studies the effectiveness of using a PBI coating on the front bumper in a multi-shock shield design for enhanced hypervelocity impact resistance. A thin PBI coating of 43 micron was observed to improve the shielding efficiency of the CFRP laminate by 22.06% when exposed to LEO environment conditions in a simulation chamber. To study the effectiveness of PBI coating in a hypervelocity impact situation, experiments were conducted on the CFRP and the PBI coated CFRP laminates with projectile velocities between 2.2 to 3.2 km/s. It was observed that the mass loss of the CFRP laminates decreased 7% when coated by a thin layer of PBI. However, the study of mass loss and damage area on a witness plate showed CFRP case to have better shielding efficiency than PBI coated CFRP laminate case. Therefore, it is recommended that PBI coating on the front bumper is not so effective in improving the overall hypervelocity impact resistance of the space structure.
In this study, the interfacial stresses in RC beams strengthened by externally bonded prestressed GFRP laminate are evaluated using an analytical approach, based on the equilibrium equations and boundary conditions. A comparison of the interfacial stresses obtained from the present analytical model and other existing models is undertaken. Otherwise, a parametric study is conducted to investigate the effects of geometrical and material properties on the variation of interfacial stresses in damaged RC beams strengthened by externally bonded prestressed GFRP laminate. The results obtained indicate that the damage degree has little effect on the maximum shear stress, with a variation less than 5% between the damaged and undamaged RC beams. However, the results also reveal that the prestressing level has a significant effect on the interfacial stresses; hence the damaged RC beam strengthened with an initial prestressing force of 100 kN gives 110% higher maximum shear stress than the damaged RC beam strengthened with an initial prestressing force of 50 kN. The values of shear stress obtained by the analytical approach are approximately equal to 44% of those obtained from the numerical solution, while the interfacial normal stresses predicted by the numerical study are approximately 26% higher than those calculated by the analytical solution.

A layerwise theory for the dynamic response of a laminated composite plate with integrated piezoelectric actuators and sensors subjected to both mechanical and electrical loadings is proposed. The formulation is derived form the variational principle with consideration for both total potential energy of the structures and the electrical potential energy of the piezoceramics. The governing equations of the present theory account for direct and converse effects of piezoelectrics, and layerwise variation of displacement field through the thickness of a laminate.
Impact damages induced by a low-velocity impact load on carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composite plates fabricated with various stacking sequences were studied experimentally. The impact responses of the CFRP composite plates were significantly affected by the laminate stacking sequences. Three types of specimens, specifically quasi-isotropic, unidirectional, and cross-ply, were tested by a constant impact carrying the same impact energy level. An impact load of 3.44 kg, corresponding to 23.62 J, was applied to the center of each plate supported at the boundaries. The unidirectional composite plate showed the worst impact resistance and broke completely into two parts; this was followed by the quasi-isotropic lay-up plate that was perforated by the impact. The cross-ply composite plate exhibited the best resistance to the low-velocity impact load; in this case, the impactor bounced back. Impact parameters such as the peak impact force and absorbed energy were evaluated and compared for the impact resistant characterization of the composites made by different stacking sequences.
This paper deals with reliability analysis of specially orthotropic plates subjected to transverse lateral pressure loads by using Monte Carlo simulation method. The plates are simply supported around their all edges and have a low short span to plate depth ratio with rectangular plate shapes. Various levels of reliability analyses of the plates are performed within the context of First-Ply-Failure(FPF) analysis such as ply-/laminate-level reliability analyse, failure tree analysis and sensitivity analysis of basic design variables to estimated plate reliabilities. In performing all these levels of reliability analyses, the followings are considered within the Monte Carlo simulation method: (1) input parameters to the strengths of the plates such as applied transverse lateral pressure loads, elastic moduli, geometric including plate thickness and ultimate strength values of the plates are treated as basic design variables following a normal probability distribution; (2) the mechanical responses of the plates are calculated by using simplified higher-order shear deformation theory which can predict the mechanical responses of thick laminated plates accurately; and (3) the limit state equations are derived from polynomial failure criteria for composite materials such as maximum stress, maximum strain, Tsai-Hill, Tsai-Wu and Hoffman.

A Green's function approach is adopted for analyzing the thermoelastic deformation and stress analysis of a plate made of functionally graded materials (FGMs). The solution to the 3-dimensional steady temperature is obtained by using the laminate theory. The fundamental equations for thermoelastic problems are derived in terms of out-plane deformation and in-plane force, separately. The thermoelastic deformation and the stress distributions due to the bending and in-plane forces are analyzed by using a Green’Às function based on the Galerkin method. The eigenfunctions of the Galerkin Green's function for the thermoelastic deformation and the stress distributions are approximated in terms of a series of admissible functions that satisfy the homogeneous boundary conditions of the rectangular plate. Numerical examples are carried out and effects of material properties on thermoelastic behaviors are discussed.
