  • Freshwater algae living in shallow waters have evolved various photomovement to stay in the optimum light condition for survival. Previous action-spectra investigations showed that Spirogyra filaments have phototropic movement in blue light. To decipher the genetic control of phototropic movement, two phototropin homologues were isolated from Spirogyra varians, and named SvphotA and SvphotB. Both phototropins have similar molecular structure consisted of two light-oxygen-voltage domains (LOV1, LOV2) and a serine / threonine kinase domain. SvphotA and SvphotB had 48.7% sequence identity. Phylogenetic analysis showed SvphotA and SvphotB belong to different clades suggesting early divergence, possibly before the divergence of land plants from the Zygnematales. Quantitative PCR and northern blot analysis showed that SvphotA and SvphotB responded differently to red and blue light. SvphotA was consistently expressed in the dark and in blue light, while SvphotB was expressed only when the plants were exposed to light. When the filaments were exposed to red light, SvphotA was significantly downregulated whereas SvphotB was highly upregulated. These results suggest that the two phototropins may have different roles in the photoresponse in S. varians.

  • In this study we investigated the effects of dietary fat sources and onion on serum lipid levels in rats. One hundred twenty female Wistar rats two weeks old were randomly divided into five groups of 24 animals assigned to one of the ive modalities : Control group was fed only basal diet containing 6.3% of corn oil, T and L group were administered 6.3% beef tallow and lard substituted for corn oil in basal diet, LOv and LOx group were given same amount of lard as L group together with 4.2ml of onion juice/kg body weight, and 8.2ml of onion juice/kg body weight respectively. Six randomly selected rats from each group were evaluated for hematologic and serum biochemical parameters weekly. Over 4 week experiments it was found that the triglyceride and cholesterol levels were significantly elevated in T and L group compared with the control group. Triglyceride contents were significantly increased in L group compared with T group. But there was no difference in cholesterol levels between L and T group. LOv diet did not decrease significantly the triglyceride and cholesterol levels, but LOx group significantly did compared with L diet. LOx group had nearly normal values of bilirubin, creatinine, uric acid level and hemoglobin contents cut slightly increased levels in the glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase and alkaline phosphatase activities.

  • Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technology provides high data rate and enhanced quality of service for wireless communications. Since the benefits from MIMO result in a heavy computational load in detectors, the design of low-complexity suboptimum receivers is currently an active area of research. Lattice-reduction-aided detection (LRAD) has been shown to be an effective low-complexity method with near-maximum-likelihood performance. In this paper, we advocate the use of systolic array architectures for MIMO receivers, and in particular we exhibit one of them based on LRAD. The "Lenstra-Lenstra-Lov$\acute{a}$sz (LLL) lattice reduction algorithm" and the ensuing linear detections or successive spatial-interference cancellations can be located in the same array, which is considerably hardware-efficient. Since the conventional form of the LLL algorithm is not immediately suitable for parallel processing, two modified LLL algorithms are considered here for the systolic array. LLL algorithm with full-size reduction-LLL is one of the versions more suitable for parallel processing. Another variant is the all-swap lattice-reduction (ASLR) algorithm for complex-valued lattices, which processes all lattice basis vectors simultaneously within one iteration. Our novel systolic array can operate both algorithms with different external logic controls. In order to simplify the systolic array design, we replace the Lov$\acute{a}$sz condition in the definition of LLL-reduced lattice with the looser Siegel condition. Simulation results show that for LR-aided linear detections, the bit-error-rate performance is still maintained with this relaxation. Comparisons between the two algorithms in terms of bit-error-rate performance, and average field-programmable gate array processing time in the systolic array are made, which shows that ASLR is a better choice for a systolic architecture, especially for systems with a large number of antennas.

  • We present a unifying framework to establish a lower-bound on the number of semidefinite programming based, lift-and-project iterations (rank) for computing the convex hull of the feasible solutions of various combinatorial optimization problems. This framework is based on the maps which are commutative with the lift-and-project operators. Some special commutative maps were originally observed by $Lov{\acute{a}}sz$ and Schrijver, and have been used usually implicitly in the previous lowerbound analyses. In this paper, we formalize the lift-and-project commutative maps and propose a general framework for lower-bound analysis, in which we can recapture many of the previous lower-bound results on the lift-and-project ranks.

  • In this paper, the efficient column-wise/row-wise lattice reduction (LR) updating and downdating methods are developed and their complexities are analyzed. The well-known LLL algorithm, developed by Lenstra, Lenstra, and Lov${\acute{a}}$sz, is considered as a LR method. When the column or the row is appended/deleted in the given lattice basis matrix H, the proposed updating and downdating methods modify the preconditioning matrix that is primarily computed for the LR with H and provide the initial parameters to reduce the updated lattice basis matrix efficiently. Since the modified preconditioning matrix keeps the information of the original reduced lattice bases, the redundant computational complexities can be eliminated when reducing the lattice by using the proposed methods. In addition, the rounding error analysis of the proposed methods is studied. The numerical results demonstrate that the proposed methods drastically reduce the computational load without any performance loss in terms of the condition number of the reduced lattice basis matrix.

  • Lattice-reduction (LR) techniques have been developed for signal detection in spatial multiplexing multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems to obtain the largest diversity gain. Thus, an LR-assisted zero-forcing (ZF) receiver can achieve the maximum diversity gain in spatial multiplexing MIMO systems. In this paper, a simplified analysis of the achievable diversity gain is presented by fitting the channel coefficients lattice-reduced by a complex Lenstra-Lenstra-$Lov{\acute{a}}z$ (LLL) algorithm into approximated Gaussian random variables. It will be shown that the maximum diversity gain corresponding to two times the number of receive antennas can be achieved by the LR-based ZF detector. In addition, the approximated bit error rate (BER) expression is also derived. Finally, the analytical BER performance is comparatively studied with the simulated results.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of water-soluble sulfated ${\beta}$-glucan (SBG) obtained from Ganoderma lucidum mycelia on the antihyperlipidemic and serum lipid levels in high-fat diet-induced obese rats. Five-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed a high-fat diet for two weeks to induce obesity. They were ten divided into five groups-normal control diet group (NC), high-fat control diet group (HC), high-fat diet and 200 mg/kg of SBG group (HC-HSBG), high-fat diet and 20 mg/kg of SBG group (HC-LSBG), and high-fat diet and 20 mg/kg of lovastatin group (HC-Lov)-and fed one of five diets for two more weeks. Although food intake and final body weight after four weeks of SBG consumption were similar in the five experimental groups, food efficiency ratio was higher in the high-fat diet groups(2, 3, 4, and 5) than in the NC group. In evaluating the hematological parameters of the rats, the neutrophil and monocyte ratios were higher in the HC-HSBG, HC-LSBG, and HC-Lov groups than in the HC group. Serum lipid profiles were analyzed after a 12 hr fast at the end of the study. Total cholesterol, triglyceride, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels were significantly lower in the HC-HSBG and HC-LSBG groups than in the HC group. These results suggest that chemically engineered sulfated mushroom ${\beta}$-glucan (SBG) might contribute to lower cholesterol and lipid levels in blood.

  • Lenstra-Lenstra-$Lov{\acute{a}}sz$ (LLL) is an effective receiving algorithm for Multiple-Input-Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems, which is believed can achieve full diversity in MIMO detection of fading channels. However, the LLL algorithm features polynomial complexity and shows poor performance in terms of convergence. The reduction of algorithmic complexity and the acceleration of convergence are key problems in optimizing the LLL algorithm. In this paper, a variant of the LLL algorithm, the Hybrid-Fix-and-Round LLL algorithm, which combines both fix and round measurements in the size reduction procedure, is proposed. By utilizing fix operation, the algorithmic procedure is altered and the size reduction procedure is skipped by the hybrid algorithm with significantly higher probability. As a consequence, the simulation results reveal that the Hybrid-Fix-and-Round-LLL algorithm carries a faster rate of convergence compared to the original LLL algorithm, and its algorithmic complexity is at most one order lower than original LLL algorithm in real field. Comparing to other families of LLL algorithm, Hybrid-Fix-and-Round-LLL algorithm can make a better compromise in performance and algorithmic complexity.
