  • There are a lot of multimedia functions getting included in mobile devices recently, not only simple audio but visual functions as well, such as video playing, game and web browsing. Such the visual multimedia functions brought the strong requirement for much bigger LCD Display and high resolution. And the brightness of LCD is also one of major requirements and it is required to be more bright. However, LCD brightness is limited to increase because of power consumption. It occupies nearly 30% of the whole system power. This thesis suggests an effective and simple method of adjusting the LCD backlight brightness, considering a characteristic of battery and user pattern.

  • In this paper. we Propose an UXGA class LCD controller for controlling the LCD panel. The proposed controller supports the full screen display using GCD between input and output resolutions. The proposed LCD controller includes the motion detector based on median filter which can detect the motion of input image for the enhancement of a image quality. Also, it divides the motion into 3 stages such as still, semi-moving and moving, and uses the different interpolation algorithms according to the degree of motion. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed interpolation algorithm, we use PSNR method and compare the conventional algorithm by using computer simulation. For the proposed motion detection algorithm, we use a visual verification and the estimation of pixel changes. The proposed LCD controller has been designed and verified by VHDL. It has been synthesized using Xilinx VirtexE FPGA.

  • As the size of the FPD(Flat Panel Display) becomes larger and its resolution is higher, it is required a new controller to support these specifications. In this paper, we have designed a universal controller of a-Si TFT LCD which will dominate the future market. We propose a new type of a LCD controller, which is constructed by four-line parallel-bus architecture and can enlarge low resolution images to SXGA class images by using a new interpolation algorithm. The proposed LCD controller has been simulated and synthesized by using Synopsys VHDL.

  • In this paper, we try to make a systematic analysis for the vertical crosstalk on LCD driving. The vertical Crosstalk is one of the inevitable phenomena in the high-resolution TFT-LCDs. At first, the vortical Crosstalk is defined. Considering the structure of the pixels and data lines, a LCD (a pixel) is modeled electrically by its' equivalent circuit. The circuit is verified by experiment and used to find the cause of the vertical Crosstalk.

  • A real-time holography system using LCD with CCD camera is proposed. In this system, the rainbow hologram is used since it can be reconstructed by white light source. And to record on CCD camera, a kind of in-line holography method is used to widen the width of the fringe pattern. The interference fringe pattern by proposed system is detected with CCD camera and transferred to the LCD. A 3-dimensional image is reconstructed when the white light source illuminates the LCD. If the position of the input image is changed, that of the reconstructed image is also changed. So it can represent 3-dimensional moving images at real-time. In this paper, to confirm the usefulness of the proposed method, the reconstructed image by holographic film is compared to the same reconstructed image by LCD. In the recording process, the optimal ratio of the reference and object beam intensity is also investigated.

  • In this paper, a new high resolution XGA-SLM is implemented through modification of a commercial TFT-LCD beam projector and its optical modulation characteristics as a spatial light modulator(SLM) is also analyzed. That is, the optics module, projection lamp and fans are removed from a commercial beam projector and instead, some electric circuits to compensate their removal are manufactured and then, by inserting them into the beam projector, a new XGA-SLM is finally implemented. From some characteristic experimental results of the implemented high resolution TFT-LCD SLM, the proposed TFT-SLM is found to have an good optical linearity in amplitude and phase modulation characteristics as a function of the input gray levels. Especially, through implementation of the suggested TFT-LCD panel, the implemented SLM is proposed as a new relatively low-cost and high resolution SLM for optical information processing.

  • 요즘, LCD TV 가 등장하면서 LCD 백라이트로써 LCD TV 에 적용하기 위해서는 무엇보다도 휘도특성의 개선이 요구되고 있다. TV 대응 LCD Panel 은 Monitor 대응 제품에 비해서 일반적으로 해상도가 낮으므로, 투과율면에서 장점은 있으나, 현재의 백라이트 구조로는 만족할만한 성능을 낼 수 없는 상황이다. 그러므로 고휘도 백라이트를 위해서 EEFL(External Electrode Fluorescent Lamp) 혹은 CCFL(Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) 의 복수 사용을 전제로 한 직하방식에 대한 개발 검토가 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 직하방식에 의한 고휘도화는 램프수는 증가되지만 프리즘시트를 사용하지 않아서 가격 경쟁력이 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 EEFL 16등을 이용하여 17인치 직하형 백라이트를 제작하여 기구적, 전기적, 광학적 특성을 분석하였으며, 그 결과 11,700 nit 의 휘도를 달성하여 TV 대응 수준을 확보하였다.
