  • The maintenance of school building is pivotal issue. However, it is difficult to obtain basic analysis data for LCC(Lifecycle Cost) analysis and maintenance planning of school building. Therefore, this study proposed System Dynamics(SD) techniques to make maintenance decisions for school building. The interaction between the major parameters related to the aging of a building, maintenance activities, and cost were expressed in Causal Loop Diagram. Based on this, the formula for the relationship between causal maps was defined and converted to Stock and Flow Diagram. Through the completed SD model the 50-year plan of 214 educational building were tested by considered in account budget, maintainability, and budget allocation opinions. As a result, the integrated SD model demonstrated that it can support strategic decision making by identifying the status class and LCC behavior of school buildings by scenario. According to the scenario analysis, the rehabilitation action of preventive maintenance that primarily repairs the buildings in condition grade C showed the best performance improvement effect relative to the cost. Therefore, if the proposed SD model is expanded to consider the effects of other educational policies, the crucial performance improvement budget can be estimated in the long-term perspective.

  • This study proposes a track maintenance quantity estimation model that considers evolution of rail fatigue damage and ballast settlement based on actual maintenance data from the Gyeongbu high-speed railway, and revises the existing life cycle cost (LCC) model for railway track. Using this model, maintenance quantities and life cycle costs based on different track quality levels are evaluated and discussed. According to the results, it is confirmed that applying the track maintenance quantity estimation model that accounts for rail fatigue damage and ballast settlement allows us to reasonably estimate maintenance costs close to the actual data. The track quality coefficient significantly influences both rail and ballast maintenance quantities, with ballast maintenance having a greater impact than rail maintenance. Additionally, as train speed increases, both rail and ballast maintenance quantities rise. Moreover, a higher track quality coefficient leads to a steeper increase in maintenance quantities with increasing train speed. Consequently, LCC also exhibits a faster growth rate over time with higher track quality coefficients and faster train speeds, resulting from an increased proportion of maintenance costs.

  • Ground source heat pump systems (GSHP) can achieve higher performance of the system, by supplying more efficient heat source to the heat pump, than the conventional air-source heat pump system. But building clients and designers have hesitated to use GSHP systems, due to expensive initial cost, and uncertain economic feasibility. In order to reduce the initial cost, many researches have focused on the energy-pile system, using the structure of the building as a heat exchanger. Even though several experimental studies for the energy-pile system have been conducted, there was not enough data of quantitative evaluation with economic analysis and comprehensive analysis for the energy-pile. In this study, a prediction method has been developed for the energy pile system with barrette pile, using the ground heat transfer model and ground heat exchanger model. Moreover, a feasibility study for the energy pile system with barrette pile was conducted, by performance analysis and LCC assessment. As a result, it was found that the heat exchange rate of a barrette pile was 2.55 kW, and the payback period using LCC analysis was 8.8 years.

  • In a construction project, the portion for maintenance costs for a building is considerable compared to the initial construction cost. As such, Life Cycle Cost (LCC) analysis is being increasingly utilized to assess the design value of engineering work in Korea. Additionally, the Public Procurement Service in Korea announced that it will be mandatory for all domestic construction projects to adopt BIM. Furthermore, the paradigm for architectural design has shifted from 2D to 3D, and to BIM, which includes a data management system. Within this background, however, there is currently no adequate BIM-based LCC analysis software and the requirements of cost estimation for repair and replacement cost for a building is not completely adequate in BIM tools such as Revit and Archicad. Therefore, this study suggests a process of cost estimation for repair and replacement (R&R) cost based on IFC data. First, we analyzed existing R&R criteria and defined BIM-based requirements when calculating R&R costs. These requirements were extracted from relevant IFC data. Subsequently, this was saved to a database and a BIM-based database was built for R&R cost estimation. Finally, this database was connected with external databases such as R&R Criteria DB and Cost Information DB to calculate R&R costs. This process is expected to improve upon the traditional process of cost estimation of R&R cost by applying a BIM model. The proposed process can contribute to a further standardizing of BIM-based LCC analysis thru application to initial construction costs, energy costs, and other maintenance costs.

  • Many kinds of high temperature superconducting (HTS) devices are being developed due to its several advantages. In particular, the advantages of HTS devices are maximized under the DC condition. A line commutated converter (LCC) type high voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission system requires large capacity of DC reactors to protect the converters from faults. However, conventional DC reactor made of copper causes a lot of electrical losses. Thus, it is being attempted to apply the HTS DC reactor to an HVDC transmission system. The authors have developed a 8 mH class HTS DC reactor and a model-sized LCC type HVDC system. The HTS DC reactor was operated to analyze its operational characteristics in connection with the HVDC system. The voltage at both ends of the HTS DC reactor was measured to investigate the stability of the reactor. The voltages and currents at the AC and DC side of the system were measured to confirm the influence of the HTS DC reactor on the system. Two 5 mH copper DC reactors were connected to the HVDC system and investigated to compare the operational characteristics. In this paper, the operational characteristics of the HVDC system with the HTS DC reactor according to firing angle are described. The voltage and current characteristics of the system according to the types of DC reactors and harmonic characteristics are analyzed. Through the results, the applicability of an HTS DC reactor in an HVDC system is confirmed.

  • LCP(Life Cycle Profiles) of bridge structures are indispensable for the LCC(Life Cycle Cost) evaluations of bridge system. The bridge under considerations may be newly-designed one or one in service. Thus, a systematic study of LCP is essential for both reliable LCC evaluation and strategic bridge management. LCP is mainly influenced by the structural environment in nature. However, in Korea, LCC evaluation has been performed with the LCP of foreign research results or only with the pieces of professional engineers' opinion. Therefore, to alleviate the drawbacks of foreign LCP and to enhance the reliability of current LCP, LCP should be established using the available data in bridge management system(BMS). In this study, LCP along with a subset of the BMS data was investigated and several mathematical expressions were proposed and evaluated. The condition ratings of a bridge were trasformed into the numerical indices through fuzzy logics with real field data. From the numerical results, it is concluded that the mathematical LCP model of $y=\sqrt{y^2_0-at}$ is shown to be the fittest one (R=0.815) to express the condition rating varied with the age. This has been drawn from the case study of slab bridges under the similar conditions.

  • The needs for Light Railroad Transit(LRT) have been increased due to the heavy traffic congestions in large cities like Seoul, Korea. Korean government is seeking the LRT system development (including planning, designing, construction, and maintenance and operations) in terms of public-private-partnership (PPP). At the private sector side, it is crucial to estimate the life cycle cost (LCC) to project the cash flow during the O&M period. Since the most construction and O&M cost of LRT project is at the bridge construction, a cost analysis model and a cost breakdown structures (CBS) on LRT bridges are discussed through in depth literature reviews. Construction and maintenance cost of bridges are collected and analyzed. LCC is analyzed by types of bridge superstructures and historical data of repair and rehabilitation (R&R) is investigated. There have been scarce number of LCC analysis on railway bridges. This research delivers a well-defined CBS and maintenance cost data, which will be a great benefit to the systematic maintenance strategy development for railroad bridges.
