  • The design and implementation of Ku-Band frequency synthesizer was accomplished by the use of PLL and frquency multiple method. Design procedure and operation characteristics of PLL circuit were analyzed on the basis of control theory to synthesize about 1 GHz frequency which should be stable. By connecting frequency doubler and frequency eighth multiplier to the designed PLL circuit in series, Ku-Band frequency was synthesized. The validity of design method of Ku-Band frequency synthesizer was verified through experimental results.

  • In this paper, we designed and fabricated the frequency mixer, which is the core parts of high frequency head in Ku-band tracking radar. To overcome the problem of single-ended and single-balanced resistive structure, we designed the fine-line structure with balanced mixer, to generate IF signal without distortion in L-band, after receiving the RF signal of the Ku-band. The prototype mixer showed a Noise Figure Max of 6.823dB, Gain of 4.1598~4.676dB and Band Pass of 61MHz in 5 Ku-band samples frequency.

  • This paper summarizes the design concepts and implementation of a Ku-band channel amplifier's engineering model for the communication and broadcasting satellite applications. The selected architecture uses the analog gain control for the FGM(Fixed Gain Mode) and the output level limiting using automatic loop control for the ALC (automatic level control) mode. The Ku-band channel amplifier incorporates several state-of-the-art components including voltage-controlled PIN diode attenuators, and various temperature-compensation circuits. The measured characteristics of the Ku-band channel amplifier are in good agreement with the expected performance. The results show a fixed gain control of 28 dB, and an automatic level control of 16 dB over operating temperature range. The designed engineering model could be used as a channel amplifier for Ku-band communication and broadcasting satellite payload system.

  • We propose a Ku-band driver and high-power amplifier monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) employing a compensating gate bias circuit using a commercial 0.5 ${\mu}m$ GaAs pHEMT technology. The integrated gate bias circuit provides compensation for the threshold voltage and temperature variations as well as independence of the supply voltage variations. A fabricated two-stage Ku-band driver amplifier MMIC exhibits a typical output power of 30.5 dBm and power-added efficiency (PAE) of 37% over a 13.5 GHz to 15.0 GHz frequency band, while a fabricated three-stage Ku-band high-power amplifier MMIC exhibits a maximum saturated output power of 39.25 dBm (8.4 W) and PAE of 22.7% at 14.5 GHz.

  • This paper describe the passive intermodulation products(PIMs) which are formed in high power Ku-band transponder and antenna subsystem on the Communication St Broadcasting Satellite(CBS)program when two transmit carriers beat together to generate harmonics that fall into the receive band. How the PIMs are initially generated and the effect of PIMs for Ku-Band payload system are analyzed by calculating the PIMs frequencies and the power level of PIMs.

  • This paper presents temperature-compensation circuits of Ku-band amplifiers for satellite payload. After carefully investigating design specifications of Ku-band amplifiers for satellite payload, we designed three types or temperature-compensation circuits, which are an active bias circuit, an attenuator control, and an ALC loop circuit. Our design technique demonstrates good agreement between measured and predicted results. These temperature-compensation circuits are suitable for Ku-band satellite payload active components, such as channel amplifiers, LNA and IF amplifiers.

  • In this paper, a Multi-Band Ku-band down converter was designed for reception of multi-band digital satellite broadcasting. The Multi-band low-nose down converter was designed to form four local oscillator frequencies (9.75, 10, 10.75 and 11.3GHz) representing a low phase noise due to VCO-PLL with respect to input signals of 10.7 to 12.75GHz and 3-stage low noise amplifier circuit by broadband noise matching, and to select an one band of intermediate frequency (IF) channels by digital control. The developed low-noise downconverter exhibited the full conversion gain of 64dB, and the noise figure of low-noise amplifier was 0.7dB, the P1dB of output signal 15dBm, and the phase noise -73dBc@100Hz at the band 1 carrier frequency of 9.75GHz. The low noise block downconverter (LNB) for receiving four-band digital satellite broadcasting designed in this paper can be used for satellite broadcasting of vessels navigating international waters.

  • A Ku-band low noise amplifier has been designed and fabricated by using 0.25 um SiGe BiCMOS process. The developed Ku-band LNA RFIC which has been designed with hetero-junction bipolar transistor(HBT) in the BiCMOS process have noise figure about 2.0 dB and linear gain over 19 dB in the frequency range from 9 GHz to 14 GHz. Optimization technique for p-tap value and electro-magnetic(EM) simulation technique had been used to overcome the inaccuracy in the PDK provided from the foundry service company and to supply the insufficient inductor library. The finally fabricated low noise amplifier of two fabrication runs has been implemented with the size of $0.65\;mm{\times}0.55\;mm$. The pure amplifier circuit layout with the reduced size of $0.4\;mm{\times}0.4\;mm$ without the input and output RF pads and DC bais pads has been incorporated as low noise amplication stages in the multi-function RFIC for the active phased array antenna of Ku-band satellite VSAT.

  • This paper proposes a Ku-band multi-mode coupler and its monopulse tracking system, which can be applied to a unmaned aircraft vehicle(UAV) platform. In general, the carrier-to-noise(C/N) level of the beacon signal from a Ku-band commercial satellite is relatively weak compared to that of a military satellite because the Ku-band satellite has been designed for commercial services. Therefore, this paper proposes a coupler and its multi-mode monopulse tracking system satisfying the tracking accuracy under a low C/N environment and analyzes the tracking accuracy. After that, we perform a real satellite tracking test and compare the accuracy of the test with the analysis result before validating the performance of the architecture of the proposed satellite tracking system.
