  • Objectives : Many studies have investigated the electric specificity of meridian and acupoint. However, the definition about the real substance of 'Ki(Qi)' that flows in the meridian has not been established yet. The authors hypothesized that the 'Ki(Qi)' may be the very 'bioelectricity' of western medicine, from two common features that they are not visible with naked eyes and that they function in the living body only. Methods : 20 healthy adults participated in this study. Heart rate was measured before and after exercise. Acupuncture was performed at PC6 immediately after exercise with counter balance in the first experiment. In the second experiment, acupuncture group was further divided to the three groups, i.e. glove acupuncture group, manual acupuncture group, and NaCl acupuncture group. In the glove group, acupuncturist put on the two folds of latex gloves to block bioelectric currents between the acupuncturist and subject. In the NaCl group, acupuncturist had his fingertips wet with NaCl solution. Results : Exercise increased Heart Rate and acupuncture at PC6 inhibited this increase. In the second experiment, the significant difference compared to the comtrol group was the most in NaCl acupuncture and the least in Glove acupuncture. However, there was no significant difference between three groups. Conclusions : The results of this study seem to be deficient as a conclusive evidence for the hypothesis that the 'Ki(Qi)' of Korean Medicine is the 'bioelectricity' of western medicine.

  • Student research has been proposed as an educational strategy to fulfill the current requirements in basic medical education (BME) and to compatible with the self-directed development of professionalism. It is commonly accepted that the goals of student research are to develop the competencies of critical, reflective, and self-directed thinking; problem-solving; and creativity; as well as to acquire the skills necessary to search for information and analyze the literature; to cultivate the talent of mastering a specialized field through deeply intensified learning; and to establish close relationships between students and supervisors. To successfully implement student research, authorities on BME should to plan the procedure for the student research projects and allocate personal and material resources adequately in order to provide the opportunity for self-evaluation and reflection through the completion of daily records, to develop the habit of consistently evaluating one's own study, and to maintain a collegial relationship between students and supervisors by offering the proper feedbacks in a timely and consistent manner. In conclusion, despite several obstacles and difficulties in the establishment of successful student research projects, student research could provide students the motivation to develop themselves into expert academic researchers, and play a role in educating students to help solve patients' problems based on scientific evidence in the future.

  • Recently, the student internship has been introduced in medical schools as a way of preparing students with training experience and medical knowledge by performing clinical practice. This study discusses student internship management and ways to operate the internship effectively. Catholic University of Daegu School of Medicine has set up a 6-week internship program for fourth-year undergraduate students. In most of the sections, students have shown their satisfaction, particularly when they have received appropriate feedback and attention from their professors. The students found that performing the evaluation and treatment of patients and individual chart recording were informative and helpful. However, they felt a lack of basic knowledge and clinical skills and had difficulty in understanding their roles and in time management. The success of an internship depends on the passion and interest that professors show for their students along with active support from the other faculty and thoughtful consideration of patients and all their friends and family members. In addition, with growing awareness of the need for the student internship, it is necessary that the school executive provide financial and administrative support to the faculty and staff, clarify roles and the work needed to perform the tasks, ensure substantiality of the individual program with professors or departments, provide enough preliminary courses, and monitor outcomes and reflection.

The participating Oriental Medical Doctor visited each school for 8 times during 5 months period, and conducted health consultations, health education classes and Korean medicine treatment for the school students and school employees. Teachers and administrators from the participating schools answered the self-reported satisfaction questionnaires and the satisfaction questionnaires results were analyzed. Results 85 people responded the program satisfaction questionnaires; 69% responders were very satisfied and 28% were satisfied about the program specifically about the student's health check-ups, informatory brochures for the parents, good participation enrollment process. Responders were pleased about doctor's consultations regarding 'Advising students about their general health', 'Ways to cure sick students fast', 'Providing students with useful information about health', and 'Teaching students how to manage their health in a good shape'. 92.94% of participants agreed to the needs of the school health and wellness program. Conclusions One of the fundamental national health policies is to provide students opportunities to maintain their good health. We have developed a successful pilot program called, "Oriental Medical Doctor's student health and wellness program". • In light of changes in today's medical environment, whether to dismantle the 50-year-old internship training system in the Republic of Korea is under debate. Although the question remains open, discussions on such issues have drawn attention to the quality of the clinical clerkship and student career advisory programs in medical colleges. The purpose of this study is to analyze the experiential clerkship and career exploration issues. Ensuring excellence of the clerkship and career advisory sessions is an essential responsibility of educational institutions regardless of whether the intern training system is dismantled. Important objectives of the experimental clerkship include reinforcing prerequisites established by law, introducing a student practice license, developing a standardized clinical assessment and student portfolio requirement, and publishing a guidebook for clinical directors. For career exploration, it is necessary to broaden participants' experiences of specialties and to manage the variety of student career guidance programs. It is imperative for the Korean Association of Medical Colleges, in collaboration with medical colleges, to play a leading role in focusing more attention and effort on such issues.

  • The purposes of this study are to show in interpersonal relations what factors male students are stressed from, how they experience stress, how they cope With it in each situation, and what this results in It attempt to gam basic materials to promote male student health and positive coping methods, The subject of this study was 15 male students of C University located in Seoul and Kyeonggui-Do They were composed of 5 sophomores, 5 Juniors and 5 seniors The period for collecting materials was October 1997 to January 1998, and the interview time ranged from 50 minutes to two hours The interview frequency was one to three times as occasion demanded, The materials were analyzed by the methods and theory suggested by Strauss & Corbin (1990) The results were 130 categories grouped into 33 divisions by similarity Finally, they were united into 9 higher categories In interpersonal relations the core category of male student stress is "affliction", and it follows the course of generation-coping-resolution The types showed in the course of material analysis are as follows, (1) When the subject student is on good terms with the other and the stress is repeated- "affliction" is strong and continuous-and his ability sense is strong, he copes with "affliction" With his own will and solves It affirmatively, (2) When the subject student is on good terms with the other and the stress is repeated-so "affliction" is strong and continuous-and his ability sense is weak, he copes with "affliction" with an emotional bias and solves it negatively (3) When the subject student is on good terms with the other and the stress is temporary-"affliction" is strong and temporary-and his ability sense is strong, he copes with "affliction" with his own will and solves it affirmatively (4) When the subject student becomes estranged from the other and the stress is temporary-"affliction" is weak and temporary-and his ability sense is weak, he copes with "affliction" with an emotional bias and solves it negatively, (5) When the subject student becomes estranged from the other and the stress is repeated-"affliction" is strong-and continuous and his ability sense is strong, he copes with "affliction" with his own will and solves it affirmatively (6) When the subject student becomes estranged from the other and the stress is repeated-"affliction" is strong and continuous-and his ability sense is weak, he copes with "affliction" with an emotional bias and solves it negatively. According to the above results, the conditions of cause and effect for male students to generate "affliction" should be understood in order to help cope with stress caused by interpersonal relations A program for education and counseling should be developed for male students to strengthen their 'ability sense' in choosing coping strategies In addition, the individual estimation for ability sense should be performed when education and counseling them.
