In this study the theory of 'placeness' which is asserted by Christian Norberg Schultz has been adopted in debating contemporary architecture in Korea. Therefor the theory of 'placeness' has been researched to get an angle of vision on the proof of coping with the modernity in Korean architecture. Seven contemporary museum architecture which have been completed since 1990 have been examined in the view of morphology, topology, and typology which are the major factors of 'placeness'. Throughout this case study, the post-modernity in museum architecture in Korea has been proved, which establishes that the 'placeness' is one of the alternatives for contemporary architecture in Korea.

  • Vernacular perspectives had been ignored in the movement of modern architecture. This study's purpose was to review vernacular perspectives and to identify vernacular characteristics of earth architecture. Six representative contemporary earth architects were selected, and then their works were analyzed. Themes of vernacular architecture based of Frampton's critical regionalism were emerged. Findings were as following: 1) constructed by considering the local climate and the region's natural characteristics, 2) constructed with local materials seeking integration of structure and finishing work, 3) having tectonic form included regional characteristics, 4) creating space of various senses and expression of texture through earth modeling, 5) presenting homogeneity of sense of place between site and architecture, and 6) pursuing ecological and sustainable architecture. These characteristics of contemporary earth architecture reflect the vernacular architecture inherited continually in architectural history. Therefore, contemporary earth architecture has been in line with contemporary architecture aiming for sustainability.

  • Contemporary fashion broadens its image in relation with architecture and incorporates architecture in its creative field. The aim of this research is to investigate the characteristics of 'architecture for fashion' in a social context and to verify the collaborative characteristics of post-1990s fashion and architecture. This paper describes architecture as a means of expressing contemporary style and identifies social consequences resulting from this. While high fashion in the early to mid-twentieth century followed a similar trend evident in architecture to directly apply architectural elements into the creativity of the works, high fashion from 1990 extended its creative field by using architecture to symbolically represent its image and style. In line with the possibility for fashion shows to be considered as a performance art, the potential of collaboration between architecture and fashion as an installation with audience participation is discussed. Architecture, for fashion, provides significant grounds for fashion to be recognized as a parallel, independent sphere of art. Contemporary fashion, either by itself or through collaboration with architecture, comprehends space in its zone of creation. The collaborative characteristics of post-1990s fashion and architecture is verified through case studies of the three fashion houses, 'Armani Group', 'PRADA' and 'Comme des Garςcons.'

  • This study aims to analyze the multiple meaning of color variously expressed in contemporary architecture. Nowadays heterogeneity, plurality and ephemerality of modem society have been well presented in contemporary architecture. The phenomenal characteristic of color is so appropriate to express the unfixed and immaterialized attributes of contemporary architecture that it can make color a major element of architecture, which, in the past, used to be a minor element for the lack of materiality. Through the analysis of contemporary important building projects in terms of color, it can be concluded that the architectural application of color shows multiple meanings as follows; phenomenal expression, visualization of complex programs and embodiment of design process, reflection of context and control of users' mentality. At the same time, these multiple meanings are complexly presented in a single building project.

'Eerydayness' shown in contemporary architecture is defined and the criteria of case study are suggested, so that characteristics of everyday can be identified by systematically classifying and analyzing the Japanese cases in order to find the values and meanings of everydayness. The findings of this study are as follows: first, materials that show users' everydayness has indefinite potential as an element of architecture concept, and they play the role of communication and sympathy between architecture and users; second, implementation of everydayness leads to design emergence; third, everydayness can be widely applied to architecture; fourth, everydayness can be implemented regardless of architecture uses. In conclusion, the value of everydayness in contemporary architecture is that it draws user-based diverse and fresh architectural expressions that lead to opulent designs. To users, everydayness improves satisfaction of life gained from architecture and provides rich life environment because it changed common human life to a form of art.

  • This study examines how various elements characteristic of the traditional Japanese architecture are applied to contemporary architectural designs in japan. The issue of how to incorporate cultural tradition into architectural design has become one of central questions cast on modern architects. In this sense, the Japanese contemporary architecture has often been touted as infusing Japanese traditional elements into modern artifacts both functionally and aesthetically. That is, while Japanese architecture encompasses the essentials of Western modern techniques and styles, it obviously embodies Japanese tradition. Through the examination of various contemporary buildings in Japan, this study specifically explores how the vernacular forms and elements unique to Japan are reinterpreted and reinvigorated in contemporary architectural designs.

  • The point of this study consists in analysing influences of the postmodern design in the contemporary architecture. Since the modern architecture, new concept of architectural design has been materialized in the Late-Modern and the High-tech style but the revolutionary changes has been tempted by the postmodern architects who introduced the Rhetorical language in the contemporary architecture. In concrete terms postmodern architecture divided architectural elements from existing function (according to U. Eco, it is the primary function of architecture) and gave another function which is the secondary function or the symbolic function or architecture. And the methods of deviation from the conventional code is exactly the rhetorical expression technique which governed the history of art in Europe (but these technique is more intensively applied in the postmodern architecture) So this study is purposed to analyse the different rhetorical "figyres" regarding the syntax and semantic of the architectural langyage, and particularly to approach to the basic mechanism of the New Design Concept in the Contemporary Archiecture.chiecture.

  • Contemporary architecture has shown interest in surface after breaking off the relation with structure. Also, the development of contemporary media has brought the great change to the surface of architecture. Interaction among the people, architecture, and environment is also the main point of interest in adapting the role of media to the architecture. But contemporary media itself have been applied on surface in architecture lately. So, it is purpose of the study to analyze the contemporary media characteristics application on the surfaces of EXPO pavilions based on the related characteristics of interaction effects. The categories and the contents for the frame of case studies were arranged through document research and field study. Case studies were focused on the pavilions of the World Exposition Shanghai China 2010. Surface can make the interaction between human and architecture more dramatically by the application the role of media. It was analyzed through the study that the interaction level of people is the important issue shared in digital or analog media application on surface of pavilion. The complementary relationship between surface of contemporary architecture and contemporary media can be manipulated and enriched by the application of various style of media on surface.
