Purpose: The aim of this study was to describe health status and to identify the factors related to health behavior in older adults in South Korea. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with a convenience sample of 186 older people (mean age =68.2yrs, 65.1% Female) registered at one senior center. Data were collected by self-report questionnaires or through face to face interview. The instruments were the Modified Health Behavior Assessment Scale, Stanford Research Instruments for Chronic Disease, Self-Efficacy, SOF Frailty Index and Quality of life questionnaire. The data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation, and stepwise multiple regression. Results: 58.6% older adults perceived their health status positively. Education level and economic status were significantly related to health behaviors of older adults. Self-rated health, sleep, stress, quality of life, health distress, depression, and frailty were significantly correlated with the health behaviors of older adults. Frailty, education level, and sleep disturbance were the significant factors predicting the health behaviors. Conclusion: The findings from this study suggest that nurses should take into consideration education level of older adults to promote their health behaviors and health promotion program which focuses on maintaining the quality of sleep and preventing frailty.
Purpose: Perceived barriers to exercise were investigated for adults. Method: A total 1266 subjects were selected by a quota sampling method with age, gender, and residence. Perceived barriers were categorized under 4 groups: knowledge, psychological, physical, and external factors. All 23 items of perceived barriers were responded on a dichotomous (yes/no) scale. Result: Mean number of perceived barriers was 4.61 and 87.9% subjects perceived at least one barrier which prevented involvement in exercise. External barriers ranked highest, followed in order by psychological, knowledge, and physical barriers. Most factors of perceived barriers were found to be different by age, gender, and residence, in that, the younger, female, living in Daejeon subjects were found to respond with more barriers than the older, male, living in Chungju or Seoul. Conclusion: Perceived barriers to exercise are differenct by age, gender, and residence. Therefore, it is recommended that age, gender, and residence of subjects must be considered in order to develop exercise programs and public campaigns.
Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the degrees of depression and activities of daily living (ADLs), and to identify factors that predict depression in elderly patients. Methods: The sample was149 patients (80% female; mean age 79.1) from three geriatric hospitals located in small cities and who agreed to participate in the study. Data were collected by staff nurses involved in direct patient care from October to September 2009. The level of depression was measured on a daily basis for seven days using a 13-item scale. Patients' ADLs was measured using a modified 10-item Bathel ADLs scale. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 17.0. Results: Mean depression score was $10.05{\pm}4.77$ out of 26 points and about 27% was assessed as depressed with more than 13 points. Multiple regression analysis showed that low educational level, absence of spouse and fewer family visits predict depression. In addition, low ADLs and sleep disturbance predict depression. Conclusion: Nursing care providers need to be concerned about ADLs of older patients and should develop nursing activity programs to increase their in-hospital physical activities. It is also important care for older patients' sleep and encourages family visits to decrease their depression.
Purpose: This descriptive study was designed to investigate Body Mass Index(BMI), weight control behavior, and self-esteem in high school adolescents. Method: The convenience sample consisted of 129 high school females and 106 high school males. Data were collected using a self-report questionnaire from November to December, 1999. BMI was calculated by using the subject's self-reported body weight and height to identify objective obesity. Self evaluation about subjective obesity was measured by a single item question. Preferred BMI was calculated by using the subject's elf-reported body weight and height which the subjects desired. The Rosenberg's Self-Esteem Scale was utilized to measure the level of self-esteem. Results: Results of the study revealed that high school females perceived themselves as more more obese than their the actual BMI, excessively participated in dieting behavior and exercises, and reported lower self-esteem than that of males. Conclusion: Based on this study, health care providers need to educate female adolescents about healthy behavior as well as the normal weight range in BMI.
Purpose: This study is to examine the effect of balance taping therapy applied on the old people who suffer from arthritis upon the pain in legs and obstacle in daily activity. Methods: The research period was from Dec. 2003 to Feb. 2004, and among the old female people who visited one of the welfare halls in Seoul downtown and 4 assembly hall for old people who aged over 60 years. 30 of the experimental group and 33 of control group were optionally collected. Results: The pain degree in legs and the uneasiness degree of the obstacle in the daily life of the experimental group who were treated by the balance taping was decreased than those of the control group(p=0.015, p=0.000). Conclusions: Based upon the above result, it was confirmed that the balance taping therapy has influence in decreasing the degree of the uneasiness in the leg pain and daily activity obstacle of the old people who suffer from the arthritis, and therefore it is thought that this therapy can be usefully applied for one of the nursing methods for the old patients, and besides the repeated future researches are needed.

The collected data were analyzed using T-test, and Multiple Regression by SPSS/WIN program. The result were following ; 1. Cigarette smoking was associated with decreased serum HDL cholesterol level (p<.001). 2. Serum LDL cholesterol level was not statistically correlated with smoking tend to level by 5.77mg/dl respectively. 3. Cigarette smoking was associated with elevated serum Triglyceride level (p<.001). 4. By using regression, HDL cholesterol level was negatively correlated with obesity and alcohol.. HDL cholesterol level was positively correlated with exercise. LDL cholesterol level was positively correlated with diet and obesity. Triglyceride level was positively correlated with obesity and alcohol. In conclusion, Smoking was the most correlated with Triglyceride among the serum lipid and Serum lipid was the most correlated with obesity. Thus, it is necessary to quit smoke and weight control for prevention from disease such as coronary heart disease and lung cancer.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the using pattern of alternative therapies in the elderly. Method: 197 subjects, persons who were more than 60 years old, we interviewed. We modified and complemented Shin's(2000) instrument in accordance with purpose of this study. Data were analyzed statistically by using SAS program. Result: 1. It was shown that 66.84% of subjects have utilized one or more types of alternative therapy. 2. It was shown that the most frequently used types are acupuncture (48.83%), and ethmoid bone therapy (42.75%). 3. Acupuncture was shown to be the most satisfactory type of therapy (14.50%). 4. There was a significant difference in the use ratio by sex; female 73.47% and male 60.20%. 5. Among users of alternative therapies, the most frequent responses to each question were as follows; 1. Motive of Use - "for complete cure of symptoms" (32.31%). 2. Side effects - "no side effects" (95.97%). Conclusion: We found that elderly persons used alternative therapies more frequently than others perpulations. Diet therapy and Hand therapy were most commonly used in older people. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate emergency nurses' reported traumatic events, professional quality of life and physical symptoms. Methods: The design of the study was descriptive. The respondents were 157 Emergency nurses with the majority were women (94.3% female and 5.7% were men). Data were collected from September 28 to December 1, 2011. The professional quality of life (ProQOL) instrument is conceptualized with three sub-dimensions (compassion satisfaction, burnout, and secondary traumatic stress), in addition information about traumatic events, physical symptoms and demographic variables were collected. Burnout and secondary traumatic stress (STS) are two parts of compassion fatigue. Data were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 18.0 program and included descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlations. Results: Thirteen percent of the participants reported a high ProQOL. Compassion satisfaction was negatively correlated with burnout and physical symptoms, whereas, traumatic events had positive correlations with STS. Also, burnout and STS were positively correlated with physical symptoms respectively. Conclusion: Since the level of professional quality of life among emergency nurses was relatively low it is recommended that an intervention program for emergency nurses be instituted to improve compassion satisfaction and to decrease compassion fatigue and physical symptoms.
