기상자료 3차원 가시화 기술개발 연구 (Development of 3D Visualization Technology for Meteorological Data)

  • Meteorological data contains observation and numerical weather prediction model output data. The computerized analysis and visualization of meteorological data often requires very high computing capability due to the large size and complex structure of the data. Because the meteorological data is frequently formed in multi-variables, 3-dimensional and time-series form, it is very important to visualize and analyze the data in 3D spatial domain in order to get more understanding about the meteorological phenomena. In this research, we developed interactive 3-dimensional visualization techniques for visualizing meteorological data on a PC environment such as volume rendering, iso-surface rendering or stream line. The visualization techniques developed in this research are expected to be effectively used as basic technologies not only for deeper understanding and more exact prediction about meteorological environments but also for scientific and spatial data visualization research in any field from which three dimensional data comes out such as oceanography, earth science, and aeronautical engineering.

기상자료를 이용한 논의 일 잠재증발산량 추정 (Estimation of Daily Potential Evapotranspiration in Paddy Field Using Meteorological Data)

  • Daily potential evapotranspiration was estimated using meteorological data which are observing regularly such as rainfall, temperature, humidity, wind speed, and duration of sunshine. Penman method is used practically in estimating evapotranspiration at present, and its regional coefficients were derived at 19 stations in the Korean Peninsular. Because meteorological data are observing at 77 stations under the Korea Meteorological Administration, the methodology of estimating evapotranspiration using meteorological data will be able to be applied in more regions than Penman method.

  • The Korea Meteorological Administration has recently focused on the promotion of the meteorological industry in the private sector. Broadcast meteorology has provided the main source of income to the Meteorological industry in the United States with The Weather Channel (TWC) being the most prominent enterprise. TWC has 31 years of history and has become an icon of innovation in the U.S. meteorological industry. TWC's success story was reviewed for the possible adaptation of Korea's meteorological media industry. Expected roles for public, academic, and private sectors were suggested for boosting industrial meteorology for the media at present and in the future.

전통시대 절후법과 기후표 고찰에 따른 현대 '기상계절'과 '새로운 기후표'의 제안 (A Study of Historical Seasonal Subdivision System and Modern Definitional Issue of Meteorological Seasons)

  • In this paper, I studied about historical seasonal subdivision system and a theory of traditional monthly order, which was used for so long from Koryo dynasty to the late of Choseon dynasty in Korean histoy. Especially, I took note of the fact that there used the table of solar terms and meteorological observation what we called the table of Kihoo-pyo in the historical Sunmyung-calendar and the Soosi-calendar during the Koryo dynasty. This table of Kihoo was developed for explaining meteorological change during a year at that time. Here are largely four elements related meteorological nature : the first is the list of 24 solar terms, and the second is 12 monthly seasonal terms and 12 monthly central terms, the third is about four right hexagon based I-ching, the fourth is 72 meteorological observations called 72-hoo. Among them, the 72-hoo system is important to know how premodern people observed natural materials including animals and plants, weather, climate about meteorological phenomena according to the seasonal change or solar terms' change during a year. I argued in this article to need developing modern new table of Kihoo system like that, in order to show common people to recognize annual meteorological change more easy and clear. I also argued to need a distinct definition of meteorological seasons from a view point of modern meteorology.

  • Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite (COMS) to be launched in year 2008 will be the first Korean multi-purpose geostationary satellite aiming at three major missions, i.e.: communication, ocean, and meteorological applications. The development of systems for the meteorological mission sponsored by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) consists of payloads, ground system, and data processing system. The program called COMS Meteorological Data Processing System (CMDPS) has been initiated for the development of data processing system. The primary objective ofCMDPS is to derive the level-2 environmental products from geo-Iocated and calibrated level 1.5 COMS data. Preliminary design for the level-2 data processing system consists of 16 baseline products and will be refined by end of 3rd project year. Also considered for the development are the necessary initial information such as land use and digital elevation map, algorithms for the vicarious calibration and procedures for the calibration monitoring, and radiative transfer model. Here, we briefly introduce the overall development strategy, flow chart for the intended baseline products, a few preliminary algorithm results and future plans.

  • Owing to the higher temporal resolution, meteorological satellite data is widely used to monitor the disasters happened on the earth's surface. However, the precision of identifying disaster information is limited by the poor spatial resolution. As known, GIS technology is good at processing and analyzing the geographic information. The result shows, integrating with GIS technology, the ability of monitoring forest fire using meteorological satellite data has been greatly improved.

기상드론을 이용한 보성 지역 기상 인자의 연직 측정 및 분석 (Vertical Measurement and Analysis of Meteorological Factors Over Boseong Region Using Meteorological Drones)

  • 기상현상관측은 기상청에서 다양한 방법(지상, 고층, 해양, 항공, 등)으로 관측되고 있다. 하지만, 인간생활에 많은 영향을 미치는 대기경계층 관측에는 한계가 있다. 특히, 존데 또는 항공기를 이용한 기상관측은 경제적인 측면에서 상당한 비용이 필요하다. 따라서 본 연구의 목적은 기상드론을 이용하여 국지기상현상 중 해륙풍 연직분포에 대한 기상 인자들을 측정하고 분석하는 것이다. 해륙풍의 공간적 분포를 연구하기 위해 보성지역 표준기상관측소의 보성종합기상탑을 포함한 다른 세 지점(해안가, 산기슭, 산중턱)에 동일한 통합기상센서를 각 드론에 탑재하였다. 2018년 8월 4일 1100 LST부터 1800 LST까지 30분 간격으로 최대 400 m 고도까지 기온, 상대 습도, 풍향, 풍속, 기압의 연직 프로파일 관측이 수행되었다. 기온, 상대 습도, 기압에 대한 기상현상의 공간적 특성은 네 지점에서 보이지 않았다. 강한 일사량 시간대에 중간지점(~100 m)에서 강한 바람(~8 m s-1)이 관측되었고, 오후에는 풍향이 내륙지역의 상층부터 서풍으로 바뀌었다. 기상드론을 이용하여 관측한 하부 대기층의 분석결과는 보다 정확한 기상예보 향상에 도움이 될 것으로 기대된다.

기상 전용 항공기 도입 및 운영방안 연구 (Study on the Specification and Operation Plan of the Meteorological Purpose Aircraft)

  • The Prime objectives of this study are to identify and analyze possible solutions and select a solution for the specification and operation plan of the meteorological purpose aircraft in Korea. Infrastructure like meteorological purpose aircraft and aircraft operating systems should be set up and their efficient plan must be established to improve meteorological technic in Korea. As a result of the study, we have found that the turboprop engine powered aircraft is the most suitable to initial model for the meteorological purpose aircraft. It was found that the indirect operation method might be the best solution, also. The results of this study may be useful to make decision for selecting specification and operation of the meteorological purpose aircraft.
