  • This study aims to illustrate the current status and changes of interlibrary loan service in Korea. Transaction data of KERIS Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Service from 2004 to 2014 were analyzed and key findings include the following: 1) In case 4 year college libraries, there is a close correlation between requests and responses in the interlibrary loan, but there is none for other type of libraries. 2) Social science and literature were the most responded subject area of interlibrary loan materials. In the aspect of language, responses for English materials occupied almost half of all responses. 3) 60 percent of libraries, the number of outgoing requests exceeded the number of their responses to incoming requests. 4) After 2012, KERIS ILL service showed a steady progress in all aspects.

  • Although academic library budgets have been decreasing, the rates of print and electronic journal subscription price have consistently increased. In response to this, as part of efforts to ensure access to foreign academic materials, the Ministry of Education and Korea Education & Research Information Service (KERIS) have initiated and operated Foreign Research Information Center (FRIC) since 2006, pursuing shared acquisition and sharing of foreign print journals. This study investigates the roles/values, issues raised by stakeholders, improvements in services, and new service elements of FRIC through the in-depth interviews with librarians in charge of FRIC in addition to examining its current state. The findings show that FRIC has contributed to sharing of academic materials and to promoting research. However, it was also found that the five types of stakeholders (i.e., the Ministry of Education/KERIS, universities/libraries, users, FRICs, and publishers/agencies) have diverse issues and problems with FRIC. Therefore, this study makes some suggestions to address the issues in terms of policy, system, management, and service.

  • This study attempted to present a better direction for the development of STEAM education in science gifted and talented education by making a comparative analysis of the trends date and discussing the implications based on that through Korea Education & Research Information Service(KERIS) The results were as follows: First, the results of the analysis in the order of the published year(2011) showed that since one paper appeared in a journal, the number of the papers has continued to increase. Second, the analysis by research objects found the highest number of the studies on elementary school gifted students; followed by on middle school gifted students; on elementary school gifted students and general school students and teachers; and high school gifted students, middle school gifted students and general school students, and elementary, middle school gifted students, respectively. However, research targeted at infants and college students did not exist. Third, the analysis by research subjects found that science gifted education consists of mainly programming/curriculum and creativity. In addition, the higher number of the researches on creativity suggests that science gifted education is closely associated with not only scientific creativity but science education's nature of increasing the interest and understanding of science and technology. Fourth, the analysis by research methods revealed that the number was the highest regarding development and research studies, followed by experimental research, survey research, qualitative research, and literature research.

  • Digital textbooks, considered as core textbooks tailored to the abilities and interests of students, provide them with a combination of textbooks, reference books, workbooks, dictionaries and multimedia contents. In this paper, we employ a modified version of the Technology Acceptance Model(TAM), a model which has been widely used and empirically validated to explain why individuals use a particular information technology(IT). This paper proposes that additional variables, such as educational impacts, contents quality, interaction and enjoyment, enhance our understanding of behaviors of pilot school teachers in using multimedia-based digital textbooks as a substitute for traditional paper-version of textbooks. A structural equation model is employed with survey data from 157 pilot school teachers in pilot program supported by Korean government and KERIS(Korea Education & Research Information Service), to empirically assess the strength of the relationships in the proposed model. It is hoped that the results from this study provide meaningful insight into the development and delivery of high quality digital textbooks.

  • In this study, we analyzed KERIS Document Delivery Service (DDS) using its transaction data for the period of nine years from 2004 to 2012. We first examined the overall statistics focusing on member contributions, and conducted a network analysis based on the records of request/response (supply) between member libraries. Key findings include the following: First, in over 80% of member libraries, the number of outgoing requests exceeded the number of their responses to incoming requests. That is, for the vast majority of member libraries, their participation was concentrated on the request side. Second, KERIS DDS relies heavily on a relatively small number of top contributors, especially on the supply side. While the top contributors were active in both requests and responses (supplies), in most cases, they received and processed a disproportionally large number of requests. Third, the network analysis based on DDS requests for journal articles in 2012 further revealed the central role of top contributors. The level and pattern of concentration, however, appeared to differ by subjects (DDC). Three main patterns of centralization were found in different subjects - a network centered on a single member, a network having multiple centers, or a distributed network.

  • From 1990s the Ministry of Education and KERIS have developed nationwide academic resource sharing and service system based on universities, and have contributed to bridge the gap of information and to facilitate resource sharing between universities. Meanwhile, in Japan which starts 15 years earlier than us, the Ministry of Education and NII built nationwide academic resource sharing and service system with starting on the project of university holding resource sharing and until now have shown similar aspect of development like us. But lately, since information environment has been changing rapidly, Japan try to find new paradigm which goes around electronic resources management substitute for physical resources and open access based academic communication, institutional repository which disseminate university's research output to the outside world. This study compare academic resource sharing and service system between Japan and Korea and try to suggest for Korean academic resource sharing and service system development. In Korea, firstly we should try to replacing published resources management system to electronic resources', secondly, reorganizing oversea's resource sharing and service system, thirdly, reactivating institutional repository toward open access, finally, unification of distracted driving force.

  • The study concluded that in order to achieve a single sign-on through the federation ID management method must be used among many other methods so to establish a combined approval service that gives access to education related information provided by the 16 city and provincial offices of education and the KERIS(Korea Education & Research Information Service). The federation ID management method allows the usage of authentication policy and enables transfer of ID information to other institutions through standardized processing. Therefore by establishing single sign-on through the federation ID management method allows individual city and provincial office of education to maintain the already existing approval services while combining user identification database.

  • Massive Open Online Courses(MOOC), originally started from United States, have recently received a great deal of attention all over the world. MOOC means free online courses that anyone can attend anytime. In Korea, KERIS(Korea Education and Research Information Service) and some universities provide various MOOC services. The purpose of this paper is to present current status and improvement suggestions of MOOC. We first introduce the formal definition and history of MOOC, then discuss current status of MOOC services in Korea and other countries. We finally present improvement suggestions that include induction of active participation for universities, value creation for campus, development of revenue model, providing motivation to students for finishing courses, development of LMS(Learning Management System), securing well-trained lecturers, translation of lecture materials, ensuring quality of authentification system of MOOC services.

  • This study suggests that improvement of theses and dissertations retrieval can be made by applying appropriate academic department classification. We applied the Korea Research Institute for Vocational Education and Training(KRIVET)'s department classification to these and dissertations being serviced by Korea Education & Research Information Service(KERIS). The results show that the chosen classification appropriately represents diverse academic department information contained in the theses and dissertations either published or used within the recent three year period. The study also makes a number of suggestions that will facilitate the application of an academic department classification to a live system.
