  • The purpose of this paper is to 1)examine the current state of cultural studies in Korea with a focus on recent discourses about its 'crisis' and 2)attempt to find some ways out of these dilemmas in drama/theatre/performance studies. As Raymond Williams redefined 'culture' as 'a whole way of life,' performance studies has expanded the boundary of 'performance' from traditional performing arts onto almost everything that can be studied and analyzed 'as' performance. Performance is not only the final product on display but a whole process that includes training, workshop, and rehearsal of culture. According to Richard Schechner, workshop and rehearsal are the most critical and creative 'liminal' phases that allow traditional knowledge and alternative challenges to coexist in conflict and intentionally delay the final decision by putting itself in a perpetual process. From this view, this essay attempts to find an-no matter how limited and temporary-answer to or a possible exit from political and theoretical aporias of cultural studies.

  • This paper examines how nation-specific history of Asian war brides affects different representations of war brides in Velina Hasu Houston's Tea (1984) and Julia Cho's The Architecture of Loss (2003). While war brides had long been excluded from American history, Japanese war brides were brought to public attention in the 1980s. Korean war brides, on the other hand, were kept out of sight until the 2000s. Focusing on how this time gap is related to ethnic difference, this paper analyzes dramaturgical differences between the two plays such as the presence/absence of war bride on stage or ethnic solidarity/familial reconciliation as the main device of war bride memorialization. Such differences, the paper suggests, stem from ethnic/historical differences between Korean and Japanese war brides. Through historical interpretations of the plays, this paper argues that America's military relationships with Korea and Japan were reproduced within the Asian-American families of each drama in ways that raise questions about pan-Asian identity.

  • This article examines the shifts in discourse surrounding Korean dramas in Malaysia, a core market for the Korean Wave (Hallyu), to understand the evolving perceptions and reception of Hallyu as a role model. Employing a discourse analysis of 14 Malaysian newspapers available online from 2016 to 2022, a period marked by the rise of over-the-top (OTT) media, the study reveals a significant transition in the prevailing narrative. From 2016 to 2019, the dominant discourse was characterized by conservatism and "cultural protectionism," reflecting a tension in attitudes towards the Korean Wave. However, from 2020 onwards, there was a gradual change in perceptions and attitudes, with an increasing emphasis on the economic and cultural value of Hallyu. This shift towards an "economic discourse" illustrates a growing perception of Korean dramas as an opportunity and catalyst for regional economic development in the Malaysian context, rather than a crisis. The study highlights the dynamic nature of the Korean Wave discourse in Malaysia and its evolution in response to the changing media landscape and socio-economic factors.

  • 2000s Korean cinema was influenced by capital, so it chose the way of Allegory instead of talking directly about sensitive issues. A representative movie director is Park Chan Wook who directed The Vengeance Trilogy. , The final part of Park Chan Wook's The Vengeance Trilogy, reflected Baroque Aesthetics. I analyzed focusing on Walter Benjamin's Allegory notion in this paper. Walter Benjamin said Allegory is different from a symbol which is represented by totality. Allegory means to reconstruct the fragment instinctively and to expose something repressed. The German Tragic Drama during the baroque period reflects this well. It is my argument that Park Chan Wook incorporated these underlying themes from German Tragic Drama into . He deconstructed the liberation and the birth myth of a nation, and he restored the socialist and anarchist who were completely excluded from history.

  • Reflecting times, Korean TV dramas have gone through massive changes. So have their main characters. This study is about their jobs, which have become more professional as well as diverse. It is observed that the male characters" jobs and job-related episodes take the center stage in the stories of dramas, rather than love stories of those characters. While main characters' jobs used to be part of the overall backdrop in the past, it has been the latest trend for a drama to begin building conflicts around and in the meticulously described work settings. This is opening up the possibility for new categories of genre dramas, as opposed to the typical Koran melodramas. For further success of this newly burgeoning trend, the sense of reality matters the most. Then, it requires elaborately built narratives, based upon a high level of expertise of playwrights in the relevant fields, and realistic proper image processing techniques.
