Objective The management of psychological distress in patients with cancer is a major concern in clinical practice. In this paper, we discussed how to apply the controlling methods of Seong-Jeong (性情) and covetous desire (心慾) of Sasang constitutional medicine to patients with cancer. Methods We investigated the controlling methods of Seong-Jeong (性情) and covetous desire (心慾) through the literature of " Gyukchigo (格致藁)", "Donguisusebowon-Sasangchobongyun (東醫壽世保元 四象草本卷)", "Donguisusebowon (東醫壽世保元) and "Dongmuyougo (東武遺稿)", and presented the controlling methods of Seong-Jeong (性情) and covetous desire (心慾) for patients with cancer based on the clinical experience. Results We identified the equilibrium and harmony (中節) of sorrow-anger-joy-pleasure (喜怒哀樂) is the basis of treatment and suggested 'understanding of the others (知人)', 'understanding of the diseases (知病)' and 'knowing and acting (知行)' as methods to control of Seong-Jeong (性情) and covetous desire (心慾). The 'understanding of the others (知人)' and 'understanding of the diseases (知病)' could reduce the psychological distress. The 'knowing and acting (知行)' encourages the patients to overcome the covetous desire (心慾) and have a positive attitude to life and disease. Conclusion The controlling method of Seong-Jeong (性情) and covetous desire (心慾) of Sasang constitutional medicine could help cancer treatment controlling the psychological distress of patients with cancer, and could impact positively on the view of life and disease.
Objectives : In physiognomy, human emotion such as joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure in social relation is one of important factors for impression formation. Various emotional feelings exert significant influence on the endocrine action and the muscle activities as well as changes of one's impression, which results in changes of one's life. On the other hand, such alterations in life may also bring changes of one's impression. The method of physiognomic examination is not different from the inspecting colors that makes a diagnosis of physical conditions. Thus, based on "Yeongchu Ohseak(靈樞 五色)", the present study compares similarities and differences between the two views of the physiognomy and the Korean medicine. Methods : The similarities and differences between the two approaches will be compared to each other and analysed with the respect to inspecting colors suggested by preceding research in physiognomy and "Yeongchu Ohseak(靈樞 五色)". Results & Conclusions : From this study, we found physiognomy and the Korean medicine shares the same theoretical background. The differences that we found in the present study are as follow. The inspection diagnosis in the Korean medicine focuses on the prevention and treatment of diseases; however, physiognomy focuses on the prognostication of one's life in order to lead a happy life. As the ultimate goals of the two approaches differ with each other, it is peculiarly challenging to compare these two in detail. Therefore, the future study should address physiognomy as a part of the Korean medicine so that the Korean medicine can contribute to mankind for a better and healthy human life.

Generally, mind-body medicine is the field of studying neurose or diseases induced to body by psychological cause in a broad sense. It is said that, by definition, the medicine means the field of medicine with psychosomatic disease as its main object of research, and that it aims at utilizing the study of the relationship between mind and diseases to diagnoses and therapy of many physical diseases. Oriental medicine, the mind is classified into 'O-shin'(五神, five minds) and 'Chil-chung'(七情, seven mental states). O-shin are related to the five viscera each other. The liver contains the soul, the heart does the mind, the spleen does the consciousness, the lungs do the spirit and the kidneys do the will Chil-chung are seven mental states such as joy(喜), rage(怒), anxiety(憂), thinking(思), sorrow(悲), fear(恐) and horror(驚). If these Chil-chung are excessive, they induce physical diseases by hurting the five viscera as well as they cause mental problems. Since the society becomes more complexed and the tensions among social members gets intensified, psychological factor getting more important. In Oriental medicine, Seven Emotion(七情, in oriental medical term) as an emotional stressor was thought to be a factor of obesity. Therefore the purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between Seven Emotion and obesity in detail. Methods : overview the stress with the view of Oriental medicine and research the relationship between Seven Emotion as an emotional stressor and obesity. Results : 1. Seven Emotion can be understood as an emotional stress in Western medicine. If Seven Emotion is excessive, its extreme mental stimulation causes physical illness. 2. In recent years, the field of synthesizing voice has been developed rapidly, and the technologies such as reading aloud an email or sound guidance of a car navigation system are used in various scenes of our life. The sound quality is monotonous like reading news. It is preferable for a text such as a novel to be read by the voice that expresses emotions wealthily. Therefore, we have been trying to develop a system reading aloud novels automatically that are expressed clear emotions comparatively such as juvenile literature. At first it is necessary to identify emotions expressed in a sentence in texts in order to make a computer read texts with an emotionally expressive voice. A method on the basis of the meaning interpretation that utilized artificial intelligence technology for a method to specify emotions of texts is thought, but it is very difficult with the current technology. Therefore, we propose a method to determine only emotion every sentence in a novel by a simpler way. This method determines the emotion of a sentence according to an emotion that words such as a verb in a Japanese verb sentence, and an adjective and an adverb in a adjective sentence, have. The emotional characteristics that these words have are prepared beforehand as a emotional words dictionary by us. The emotions used here are seven types: "joy," "sorrow," "anger," "surprise," "terror," "aversion" or "neutral."
