  • In Internet of Things (IoT) environment, a variety of smart devices are connected to Internet through various network technologies such as 4G/5G, WiBro, Bluetooth, etc. in order to provide the remote monitoring service such as smart healthcare service, etc. Most standard mobility management protocols based on IETF Mobile IP may not be suitable for Internet of Things (IoT) environments due to constrained power, constrained CPU processing and memory capacity, and large signalling overhead which are inherently accompanied by various devices in IoT environments. In this article, we propose a new mobility management protocol CoMP (CoAP-based Mobility Managemenbt Protocol) for reliable mobility management in IoT environments. The architecture and algorithm to achieve both reliability and simplicity for IoT mobility management are proposed. Finally, performance has been evaluated by both mathematical analysis and simulation.

  • This paper describes the development of a smart advanced metering infrastructure(AMI) architecture and services for using smart metering in gas industry. A general gas AMI system is composed of a smart gas meter, IoT network, the AMI platform, and an operation management system with security functions. The proposed gas AMI platform supports two-way communication between smart metering devices and AMI services and is applied by oneM2M standard to support interoperability between various types of metering devices and heterogeneous IoT networks. To demonstrating AMI system with the proposed platform, we installed about 2,900 smart gas meters in real environments and operated AMI systems for one year. We verified that about 94% of gas meters are normally worked and AMI services are stably operated without error or malfunction.

  • IoT, which can be regarded as an enhanced version of M2M communication technology, was proposed to realize intelligent thing to thing communications by utilizing Internet connectivity. Things in IoT are generally heterogeneous and resource constrained. Also such things are connected with each other over LLN(low power and lossy Network). Confidentiality, mutual authentication and message origin authentication are required to make a secure service in IoT. Security protocols used in traditional IP Networks cannot be directly adopted to resource constrained devices in IoT. Under the respect, a IETF standard group proposes to use lightweight version of DTLS protocol for supporting security services in IoT environments. However, the protocol can not cover up all of very constrained devices. To solve the problem, we propose a scheme which tends to support mutual authentication and session key agreement between devices that contain only a single crypto primitive module such as hash function or cipher function because of resource constrained property. The proposed scheme enhances performance by pre-computing a session key and is able to defend various attacks.

  • The district heating system, which is the main axis of Korea's collective energy business, contributes to the national benefit and safety with the economical heat energy supply system. However, due to the uncertainty of management subjects and the shortage of professional technical personnel, there are many problems such as deterioration of thermal efficiency and unfairness of the price of the apartment houses. In this paper, we propose the monitoring points necessary for the efficiency and fault management of the district heating customer-side. And we propose a standard reference model to standardize it. We propose a technical methodology to improve the service quality and energy efficiency of the district heating facilities by applying IoT sensor technology, real-time monitoring and integrated management system.

  • In this paper, we propose a medication reminder system using IoT platforms and products to help old adults keep track of their medication schedule, one of 10 Korean instrumental activities in daily living (K-IADL). An interworking architecture based on the oneM2M standard platform is designed to allow various IoT products to be connected each other through interworking proxy entities. A prototype system for the medication reminder service is developed, which consists of a pair of off-the-shelf pill bottle and container box embedded with an NFC tag and reader respectively, three types of actuators including a LIFX LED lightbulb, Musaic speaker, Microsoft Band 2, and smartphone applications. The experiment shows that our medication reminder system can make alarms for old adults to take their pills appropriately considering where they are and when they have food inferred from data collected from sensors including ultrasonic sensor and rice cooker, fostering them to keep their medication routine.

  • With the proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT) healthcare devices, significant interoperability issue arises where devices use proprietary data transfer protocols. The IHE PCD-01 standard has been suggested for the exchange of healthcare data in ISO/IEEE 11073 PHD data model. However, the PCD-01 is not efficient to be used in the IoT environment. This is because the use of SOAP for PCD-01 may be too complex to be implemented in the resource-constrained IoT healthcare devices. In this paper, we have designed a communication system to implement ISO/IEEE 11073 and IHE PCD-01 integration using the IETF CoAP. More specifically, we have designed the architecture and procedures, using CoAP, to seamlessly transmit the bio-signal from the tiny resource-constrained IoT healthcare devices to the server in a standardized way. We have also built the agent, gateway, and PCD-01 interface at the server, all of which are using the CoAP as a communication protocol. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed system, we have used the PCD data to be transmitted over CoAP, MQTT, and HTTP. The evaluation of the system performance shows that the use of CoAP results in faster transaction and lesser cost than other protocols, with less battery power consumption.

  • With the growth of Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies, the number of IoT devices developers need to manage has increased exponentially. Many IoT standards have been proposed to allow those devices to communicate efficiently in day-to-day tasks. However, we lack trusted interworking entities for devices from different standards to collaborate securely. This paper proposes a blockchain platform that bridges multiple heterogeneous IoT platforms to co-exist and interwork. Specifically, we designed an interworking proxy application entity (IPE) implemented as a chaincode in Hyperledger Fabric to collect and process data coming from/to oneM2M and LWM2M architecture. The use of blockchain will guarantee network reliability and data integrity so that cross-standard communications can be audited and processed securely. Based on our evaluation, we show that the interworking between oneM2M and LWM2M through our blockchain platform is feasible. Furthermore, the proposed system can process up to 206 transactions per second with 1,000 running applications, which is about an 87% increase from the previously referenced study.

  • In recent years, the maker culture has realized the concept of 'making' itself through the latest technology of high technology. It is rapidly spreading as a maker's movement by sharing the production methods and information of individuals through the Internet. Countries that are leading the makers' movement expect the maker's movement to be the driving force for new value creation and economic growth from the point of view of things and the Internet. We are developing various types of open IoT platforms that can register various Internet devices and services manufactured and developed through DIY and realize interoperable services. Typical open IoT platforms require specialized API analysis capabilities and difficult access to general users due to difficult platform registration conditions and procedures. In this paper, we try to construct an open IoT platform that can be operated as a real service by creating a simple Internet application device and service application from a general manufacturer's point of view.
