An efficient method to predict the convection heat transfer coefficients on the top surface of the engine piston is proposed. The method is based on the inverse method of the thermal conduction problem and uses a numerical optimization technique. In the method, the heat transfer coefficients are numerically obtained so that the difference between analyzed temperatures from the finite element method and measured temperatures is minimized. The method can be effectively used to analyze the temperature distribution of engine pistons in case when application of prescribed-temperature boundary condition is not reasonable because of insufficient number of measured temperatures. A hollow sphere problem with an analytic solution is taken as a simple example and accuracy and efficiency is demonstrated. The method is applied to a practical large liquid petroleum gas(LPG) engine piston and the heat transfer coefficients on the top surface of the piston is successfully calculated. Resulting analyzed temperature favorably coincides with measured temperature.

A dependable boundary reconstruction technique is proposed. The finite element method is used for the analysis of the direct heat conduction problem to realize the deformable grid system. An appropriate strategy for grid update is suggested. A complete sensitivity analysis is performed to obtain the derivatives required for restoration of the optimal boundary. With the result of the sensitivity analysis, the unknown boundary is sought using the sequential quadratic programming. The method is applied to reconstruction of boundaries with sinusoidal, step, and cavity form. The overall performance of the proposed method is examined by comparison between the estimated the exact boundaries.
SP test has been confirmed the availability, however the application of SP test is hampered because the relation of stress-strain and load-displacement is not determined definitely. This study suggested an evaluation technique of plastic flow characteristic for X20CrMoV121 steel weldment through inverse analysis using SP test and finite element analysis(FEA). From the result, good agreement was found in load-displacement curves obtained from SP test and FEA. Also, The behavior of load-displacement curve from FEA show a rule that load is increase with increasing K(strength coefficient) and displacement is increase with increasing n(work hardening index). From the inverse analysis, true stress-strain curve could be obtained for each local structure of weldment. And the CGHAZ and WM, which showed lower load- displacement behavior, have smaller work hardening index, while FGHAZ have the largest index.

The methodology known as "shape sensing" allows the reconstruction of the displacement field of a structure starting from strain measurements, with considerable implications for structural monitoring, as well as for the control and implementation of smart structures. An approach to shape sensing is based on the inverse Finite Element Method (iFEM) that uses a variational principle enforcing a least-squares compatibility between measured and analytical strain measures. The structural response is reconstructed without the knowledge of the mechanical properties and load conditions but based only on the relationship between displacements and strains. In order to efficiently apply iFEM to the most common structural typologies of civil engineering, its formulation according to the kinematical assumptions of the Bernoulli-Euler theory is presented. Two beam inverse finite elements are formulated for different loading conditions. Depending on the type of element, the relationship between the minimum number of required measurement stations and the interpolation order is defined. Several examples representing common applications of civil engineering and involving beams and frames are presented. To simulate the experimental strain data at the station points and to verify the accuracy of the displacements obtained with the iFEM shape sensing procedure, a direct FEM analysis of the considered structures is performed using the LUSAS software.
The multiparameter eigenvalue method can be used to solve the damped finite element model updating problems. This method transforms the original problems into multiparameter eigenvalue problems. Comparing with the numerical methods based on various optimization methods, a big advantage of this method is that it can provide all possible choices of physical parameters. However, when solving the transformed singular multiparameter eigenvalue problem, the proposed method based on the generalised inverse of a singular matrix has some computational challenges and may fail. In this paper, more details on the transformation from the dynamic model updating problem to the multiparameter eigenvalue problem are presented and the structure of the transformed problem is also exposed. Based on this structure, the rigorous mathematical deduction gives the upper bound of the number of possible choices of the physical parameters, which confirms the singularity of the transformed multiparameter eigenvalue problem. More importantly, we present a row and column compression method to overcome the defect of the proposed numerical method based on the generalised inverse of a singular matrix. Also, two numerical experiments are presented to validate the feasibility and effectiveness of our method.

This paper presents an on-line finite element model updating method for in-service structures using measured data. Conventional updating methods, which are based on numerical optimization, are not efficient for on-line updating because they generally require repeated eigenvalue analyses until convergence criteria are met. The proposed method enables fully automated on-line finite element model updating, almost simultaneously with vibration measurement, without any user intervention or off-line procedures. The automated covariance-driven stochastic subspace identification (Cov-SSI) method is utilized to identify modal frequencies and vectors, and the identified modal data is fed to the neural network of the inverse eigenvalue function to produce the updated finite element model parameters. Numerical examples for a wind excited 20-story building structure shows that the proposed method can update the series of finite element model parameters automatically. It is also shown that sudden changes in the structural parameters can be detected and traced successfully.

A great emphasis has been placed on the design of heat treatment process to achieve desired microstructure and mechanical property of final product. In this study, finite element analysis was carried out to predict temperature, microstructure and hardness of eutectoid steel after water quenching. Convective heat transfer coefficients were determined by inverse analysis using surface temperatures measured with three different installation methods of thermocouples. Finally, the effect of convective heat transfer coefficients on the prediction of temperature history and hardness was analyzed by comparing experimental and simulation results.
In this study, the evolution of soil engineering property values according to excavation was analyzed through the inverse analysis for the OO deep excavation site located in Incheon. The stiffness of the ground was updated by comparing the horizontal wall deformation of the excavation support wall calculated by the finite element analysis at each stage of excavation and the value measured using an inclinometer. The updated stiffness was used to predict the response of the excavation support wall in the next excavation step. The finite element analysis method using the Hardening Soil model was used, and the stratum where the excavation support wall is located was selected as the stratum for the inverse analysis. The inverse analysis results showed that the stiffness value at the stiffness value at the initial stage of excavation is larger than the stiffness used in the original design. As the excavation proceeds, the stiffness calculated through the second inverse analysis was found to decrease compared to the value derived by the first inverse analysis. Therefore, it can be stated that the deformation of the excavation support wall can be accurately calculated through finite element analysis when an appropriate stiffness value is input according to the excavation stage.
In this paper, crack detection method using eigen value analysis is presented. Three methods are used: theoretical analysis, finite element method with the cracked beam elements and finite element method with three dimensional continuum elements. Finite element formulation of the cracked beam element is introduced. Additional term about stress intensity factor based on fracture mechanics theory is added to flexibility matrix of original beam to model the crack. As using calculated stiffness matrix of cracked beam element and mass matrix, natural frequencies are calculated by eigen value analysis. In the case of using continuum elements, the natural frequencies could be calculated by using EDISON CASAD solver. Several cases of crack are simulated to obtain natural frequencies corresponding the crack. The surface of natural frequency is plotted as changing with crack location and depth. Inverse analysis method is used to find crack location and depth from the natural frequencies of experimental data, which are referred by another papers. Predicted results are similar with the true crack location and depth.

This study proposed a technique for inverse problem, linear approximation of contact position and loading in single and double meshing of spiral bevel gear , using 2-dimension model considered near the tooth by root stress. Determine root stress is carried out far the gear tooth by finite element method and boundary element method. Boundary element discretization near contact point is carefully performed to keep high computational accuracy. And from those estimated results, the comparing estimate value with boundary element method value was discussed.
