  • The objective of this study was to examine changes in the porosity and internal structure of wood as it goes through the process of saccharification (extraction of fermentable sugars). This study also examined the use of different drying methods to prepare samples for characterization of internal pores, with particular emphasis on the partially disrupted cell wall. Aspen wood flour samples after dilute acid pretreatment followed by enzymatic hydrolysis were examined for nitrogen adsorption. The resulting isotherms were analyzed for surface area, pore size distribution, and total pore volume. Results showed that freeze drying (with sample pre-freezing) maintains the cell wall structure, allowing for examination of saccharification effects. Acid pretreatment (hemicellulose removal) doubled the surface area and tripled the total volume of pores, which were mostly 10-20 nm wide. Subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis (cellulose removal) caused a 5-fold increase in the surface area and a ~ 11-fold increase in the total volume of pores, which ranged from 5 to 100 nm in width. These results indicate that nitrogen adsorption analysis is a feasible technique to examine the internal pore structure of lignocellulosic residues after saccharification. The information on the pore structure will be useful when considering value-adding options for utilizing the solid waste for biofuel production.

  • Exploration of asteroids' internal structure is essential for understanding their evolutional history. It also provides a fundamental information about the history of coalescence and collision of the solar system. Among several models of the internal structures, the rubble-pile model, confirmed by the near-Earth asteroid (25143) Itokawa by Hayabusa mission [1], is now widely regarded as the most common to asteroids with size ranging from 200 m to 10 km [2]. On the contrary, monolithic and core-mantle structures are also possible for small asteroids [3]. It is, however, still challenging to look through the interior of a target object using remote-sensing devices. In this presentation, we introduce our ongoing research conducted at Seoul National and propose an idea to infer the internal structure of Apophis using available instruments. Itokawa's research provides an important benchmark for Apophis exploration because both asteroids have similar size and composition [4][5]. We have conducted research on Itokawa's evolution in terms of collision and space weathering. Space weathering is the surface alteration process caused by solar wind implantation and micrometeorite bombardment [6]. Meanwhile, resurfacing via a collision acts as a counter-process of space weathering by exposing fresh materials under the matured layer and lower the overall degree of space weathering. Therefore, the balance of these two processes determine the space weathering degrees of the asteroid. We focus on the impact evidence on the boulder surface and found that space weathering progresses in only 100-10,000 years and modifies the surface optical properties (Jin & Ishiguro, KAS 2020 Fall Meeting). It is important to note that the timescale is significantly shorter than the Itokawa's age, suggesting that the asteroid can be totally processed by space weathering. Accordingly, our result triggers a further discussion about why Itokawa indicates a moderately fresh spectrum (Sq-type denotes less matured than S-type). For example, Itokawa's smooth terrains show a weaker degree of space weathering than other S-type asteroids [7]. We conjecture that the global seismic shaking caused by collisions with >1 mm-sized interplanetary dust particles induces granular convection, which hinders the progression of space weathering [8]. Note that the efficiency of seismic wave propagation is strongly dependent on the internal structure of the asteroid. Finally, we consider possible approaches to investigate Apophis's internal structure. The first idea is studying the space weathering age, as conducted for Itokawa. If Apophis indicates a younger age, the internal structure would have more voids [9]. In addition, the 2029 close encounter with Earth provides a rare natural opportunity to witness the contrast between before and after the event. If the asteroid exhibits a slight change in shape and space weathering degree, one can determine the physical structure of the internal materials (e.g., rubble-pile monolithic, thick or thin regolith layer, the cohesion of the materials). We will also consider a possible science using a seismometer.

  • In this study, the internal structure of an optical waveguide embedded in a flexible optical circuit board is observed with a confocal microscope. In order to increase the light reflection from an internal material interface with a very small index difference, and thus enhance the signal contrast, a theta microscopy scheme has been integrated into a conventional confocal microscope, and a high NA oil-immersion lens has been used. The interface reflectivity is increased from roughly 0.0015% to 0.025% by the proposed method, and the internal structure can thus be successfully measured.

  • A phase-locked dielectric resonator oscillator (PLDRO) is an essential component of millimeter-wave communication, in which phase noise is critical for satisfactory performance. The general structure of a PLDRO typically includes a dual loop of digital phase-locked loop (PLL) and analog PLL. A dual-loop PLDRO structure is generally used. The digital PLL generates an internal voltage controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO) frequency locked to an external reference frequency, and the analog PLL loop generates a DRO frequency locked to an internal VCXO frequency. A dual loop is used to ease the phase-locked frequency by using an internal VCXO. However, some of the output frequencies in each PLL structure worsen the phase noise because of the N divider ratio increase in the digital phase-locked loop integrated circuit. This study examines the design aspects of an interconnected PLL structure. In the proposed structure, the voltage tuning; which uses a varactor diode for the phase tracking of VCXO to match with the external reference) port of the VCXO in the digital PLL is controlled by one output port of the frequency divider in the analog PLL. We compare the proposed scheme with a typical PLDRO in terms of phase noise to show that the proposed structure has no performance degradation.

  • The internal residual stresses within the multilayered structure with shan interface induced by the difference in thermal expansion coefficient between the materials of adjacent layers often provide the source of failure such as delamination of interfaces and etc. Recent development of the multilayered structure with functionally graded interface would be the solution to prevent this kind of failure. However a systematic thermo-mechanical analysis is needed fur the customized structural design of multilayered structure. In this study, theoretical model for the thermo-mechanical analysis is developed for multilayered structures of the Al-$SiC_p$ functionally graded composite for electronic packaging. The evolution of curvature and internal stresses in response to temperature variations is presented for the different combinations of geometry. The resultant analytical solutions are used for the optimal design of the multilayered structures with functionally graded interface as well as with sharp interface.

  • It is well known that Fe3Al intermetallic compound shows an anomalous peak of the yield strength at about 50$0^{\circ}C$ and then decrease at higher temperatures The dislocation structure was examined by transmission electron microscopy and high temperatures. The dislocation structure was examined by transmission electron microscopy and high temperature mechanical properties were examined by tensile and load relaxation tests. The flow stress curves obtained from load relaxation tests were then analyzed in terms of internal variable deformation theory. it was found that the flow curves consisted of three micro-deformation mechanisms -i. e inelastic deformation mode plastic deformation mode and dislocation creep deformation mode depending on both dislocation structure and deformation temperature. The flow curves could be well described by the constitutive equations of these three micro-deformation mechanisms based on the internal variable deformation theory.

  • A three-dimensional elastic blood vessel model with internal diameter variation is considered to investigate internal flow characteristics and effects of structural deformation. Also, computational analyses for both the rigid model and the fully-coupled FSI model have been conducted in order to compare the shear stress, pressure distribution, and flow velocity in detail. A 70% narrowing area of asymmetric blood vessel model was especially investigated to show the versatility of fluid-structure interaction phenomenon. The results reveal that effect of fluid-structure interaction is very important to accurately investigate the flow characteristics of the blood vessel.
