  • We describe the development of an interactive aerobic training system using vision-based motion capture and multimedia technology. Unlike the traditional one-way aerobic training on TV, the proposed system allows the virtual trainer to observe and interact with the user in real-time. The system is composed of a web camera connected to a PC watching the user moves. First, the animated character on the screen makes a move, and then instructs the user to follow its movement. The system applies a robust statistical background subtraction method to extract a silhouette of the moving user from the captured video. Subsequently, principal body parts of the extracted silhouette are located using model-based approach. The motion of these body parts is then analyzed and compared with the motion of the animated character. The system provides audio feedback to the user according to the result of the motion comparison. All the animation and video processing run in real-time on a PC-based system with consumer-type camera. This proposed system is a good example of applying vision algorithms and multimedia technology for intelligent interactive home entertainment systems.

  • There are many cases that messages of boring contents of most contents with public interests appear on the surface. Audiences don't think these contents are interesting. It is true that animations cannot be generally boring when delivering messages of public interests. was produced to focus on making audiences experience that a global warming story, the boring and textbook contents is interesting. And it was composed by the multiform story to realize narration through audiences' participation by utilizing the characteristics of live windows, not just watching the animation. This paper examines the differences between theaters and live window through the case that was produced and examples which utilized interaction for audiences' participation based on this. It analyzes the differences between environments according to characteristics of places and audiences in the differences between the theaters and live window, examines the examples to utilize interaction focusing on the process that narration is gradually changed as response to user environment design and interaction for unspecified individuals, and suggests direction that animation should move forward as public art based on the results to show the animation in Millano Piazza. According to the characteristics of live windows, the audiences of are people in the streets who are heading for different destinations, not the ones who come to theaters to watch the animation. Showing the animation with narration to them was a new attempt. When it began to show it in Millano Piazza, the audiences were very satisfied with the experiences that the stories were changed as they participated in it by themselves and naturally thought of global warming problems. You cannot know how the message of change people's habits and thoughts for the present, but this attempt was an opportunity that animations play the social role. Many animations are being produced in the world. Most of them are being done to aim at theaters, TVs, and film festivals. They should meet audiences through more various methods. One of them is animations as public art. And can be the new attempt in this sense. And in the future, animations as public art should make efforts to show you interesting experiences that you can share thoughts to be able to live together. As art of various media is changing to the one which considers public interests, animations can be new types of public art by integrating them with various technologies.

  • Simulation tools are widely used for performance evaluation of newly proposed systems. However, many industrial simulation projects fail to attain the original goals ,especially when very complicated decision logics of the experienced operatorsare needed to be modeled. We propose a technique to overcome the oabstacles. In the proposed technique, complicated decision logics are not directly modeled but an interface for interactive input is provided in the model. While running the simulation model in concurrent animation mode, whenever operator's decisions are needed an interfce screen is displayed for operator's decisions. The operator then makes decisions using the information which is provided by the animation proces itself. This technique was successfully applied to an industrial simulation projects in which alternatives were evaluated for increasingthe color lot size of car print shop.

  • The methods of presenting information are more variable with advanced computer media technology. However, when we visualize information of database, it is more difficult to understand data meaning by complex date, which is not required by user. To compose new information, user needs to combine own his memory and new information presenting result. To be quickly explored new information and be exactly understood relationship of data structure, the data presenting of visualized information is more structured and presented with meaning form. It is possible to make information visualization system, which users can explore database by oneself, with supporting interaction to be able to control and combine relationship of three-dimensional scene graphic structure, presenting factors of animation and data structure of database. There are several diagrams, such as VR diagram, Form structure diagram and simulated diagram as the case study.

  • The needs for visualizing interactive multimedia contents on portable devices with realistic three dimensional shapes are increasing as new ubiquitous services are coming into reality. Especially in digital fashion applications with virtual reality technologies for clothes of various forms on different avatars, it is required to provide very high quality visual models over mobile networks. Due to limited network bandwidths and memory spaces of portable devices, it is very difficult to transmit visual data effectively and render realistic appearance of three dimensional images. In this thesis, we propose a compression method to reduce three dimensional data for digital fashion applications. The three dimensional model includes animation of avatar which require very large amounts of data over time. Our proposed method utilizes temporal and spatial coherence of animation data, to reduce the amount. By grouping vertices from three dimensional models, the entire animation is represented by a movement path of a few representative vertices. The existing three dimensional model compression approaches can get benefits from the proposed method by reducing the compression sources through grouping. We expect that the proposed method to be applied not only to three dimensional garment animations but also to generic deformable objects.

  • The esthetics of 'grotesque' and its entertaining values have many things in common with the characteristics and properties of animation as a medium of expression. The ways to express grotesque images in animation have expanded its realm of expression with the development of modern image digitalization technologies. The grotesque images that were expressed by the combination of photographs and animations and objet animations have been developing its disharmony in a more realistic manner with full 3D animation technology and realistic motions of virtual characters with motion capture. The subject matter also has become more diverse with the advance of modern scientific civilization. An example is the appearance of Cyborg(cybernetic+organism) characters and the grotesque images in the modern times mainly start to appear in animations dealing with the isolation of human beings among its characteristics. Also, the changes of the expression methods of grotesque images along with the development of visual technology development in the future will transform its methodological forms by changing its expression methods to VR forms and interactive visuals. Thus it is expected that the grotesque images and characteristics will change into a visual genre which emphasizes dehumanization.

  • In today's era of media convergence, users can watch a drama by choosing a story like a game or enjoy a game directed like a movie. These two media material interactive storytelling, and there have been discussions about them for many years. The purposes of this study are to propose a new branch structure for interactive storytelling and find a new perspective for the method of proceeding with a branch structure. The main research targeted a game that materialized interactive storytelling best. Based on the findings, the study proposed a volume branch structure including a plot border and adjuster concept for interactive storytelling to keep the story narrative and help the users feel interactions freely. This structure can be materialized only with real-time edited videos in the game media and will be possible in the application cases of a physical engine that continues to develop and artificial intelligence that has not been introduced in games actively.
