Toward Net-Zero Energy Retrofitting: Building-Integrated Photovoltaic Curtainwalls

  • With the rapid urbanization and growing energy use intensity in the built environment, the glazed curtainwall has become ever more important in the architectural practice and environmental stewardship. Besides its energy efficiency roles, window has been an important transparent component for daylight penetration and a view-out for occupant satisfaction. In response to the climate crisis caused by the built environment, this research focuses on the study of net-zero energy retrofitting by using a new building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) curtainwall as a sustainable alternative to conventional window systems. Design variables such as building orientations, climate zones, energy attributes of BIPV curtainwalls, and glazed area were studied, to minimize energy consumption and discomfort hours for three cities representing hot (Miami, FL), mixed (Charlotte, NC), and cold (Minneapolis, MN). Parametric analysis and Pareto solutions are presented to provide a comprehensive explanation of the correlation between design variables and performance objectives for net-zero energy retrofitting applications.

The Indoor Environmental Quality Improving and Energy Saving Potential of Phase-Change Material Integrated Facades for High-Rise Office Buildings in Shanghai

  • The conflict between indoor environmental quality and energy consumption has become an unneglectable problem for highrise office buildings, where occupants' productivity is highly affected by their working environment. An effective Façade, therefore, should play the role of an active building skin by adapting to the ever-changing external environment and internal requirements. This paper explores the energy-saving and indoor environment-improving potential of a phase-change material (PCM) integrated Façade. Building performance simulations, combined with parametric study and sensitivity analysis, are adopted in this research. The result quantifies the potential of a PCM-integrated Façade with different configurations and PCM properties, taking as an example a south-oriented typical office room in Shanghai. It is found that a melting temperature of around $22^{\circ}C$ for the PCM layer is optimal. Compared to a conventional Façade, a PCM-integrated Façade effectively reduces total energy use, peak heating/cooling load, and operative temperature fluctuation during the periods of May-July and November-December.

  • A coverglass pattern was designed to improve the annual electrical energy production of a building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) module installed in the exterior walls of buildings. The transmittance pattern was calculated using ray tracing, and the results were derived by optimizing the simulation using Taguchi's method. We obtained the optimal pattern by analyzing the conventional patterns for improving the transmittance and derived design factors by quantifying the pattern. By calculating the influence of electrical energy on each design factor, we obtained the optimal coverglass pattern that produced the maximum annual electrical energy. The annual electrical energy production improved by approximately 11.79% compared to the non-patterned coverglass.

  • Construction projects are managed by focusing on the results of projects. Moreover, cost and schedule are managed separately even though the efficiency of integrated management is very high. This paper proposes existing and progress control research of existing quantity the integrated information uses WBS-CBS. Schedule and cost are most important in construction projects. Specially, progress and cost are relationship of the managing integrated in many construction management. The quantity of materials for the works of construction is the base to create activities and a network. The quantity of materials of materials for the elemens of a building is a base of cost estimation and resource. allocation. This study suggest method for relating the schedule and cost information through the case study of construction field engineers.

  • Recently, government office buildings have become important in reducing maintenance costs. However, the loss of information raised a problem for maintenance work that could not meet the needs of users. Therefore, this study proposed a BIM-based integrated maintenance system for public offices in Jeju to efficiently maintenance work. The system can be integrated with IoT sensors, big data and artificial intelligence technologies to integrate information that occurs throughout the building's entire life cycle to exchange information. This system is also scalable to buildings, plants, region and urban infrastructure facilities as well as single buildings. It is expected that the system will provide reliable, high-quality, real-time information for efficient maintenance work, thereby supporting decision making and appropriate budget planning.

Study on Integrated Workflow for Designing Sustainable Tall Building - With Parametric method using Rhino Grasshopper and DIVA for Daylight Optimization

  • Purpose: The Objective of this study is to explore the capabilities of an integrated modelling and simulation workflow when applied to an experiment-based research process, aimed at deriving daylight optimization strategies specific to tall buildings. Methods: Two methods were devised to apply this workflow with the help of DIVA and Rhino/Grasshopper. The first method is a multiple variant analysis by setting up an appropriate base case and analysing its daylight and energy performance, forming the basis of comparison for subsequent cases for design variants. The second method involved setting up the base case within a site context and conducting a solar irradiation study. An architectural variables such as overhang and shading device, were then defined as inputs in the parametric definition in Grasshopper to control the selected variable. Results: While the first method took advantage of the speed and efficiency of the integrated workflow, the second method was derived based on the ability to directly process simulation data within the integrated, single-software platform of the proposed workflow. Through these methods, different architectural strategies were explored, both to increase daylight penetration and to reduce radiant heat gain. The focus is on methods by which this workflow can be applied to facilitate the experimental derivation of daylight optimization strategies that are specific to tall building design.

스마트 그린빌딩 구현을 위한 다기능 센서 통합 모듈 시스템 개발 (Development of Multi-function Sensor Integration Module System for Smart Green Building)

  • 저탄소 녹색 환경 조성 및 성장을 위한 그린 IT 기술 개발은 미래형 신기술 분야이다. 따라서, 본 논문에서는 응용 RFID 모듈에 대한 보안 데이터를 생성하여 건물 환경에 대한 통합 감시 및 관리를 할 수 있는 스마트 그린빌딩 조성용 다기능 센서 통합 모듈 시스템을 개발하였다. 논문에서 구현한 다기능 센서 통합 모듈 시스템은 열 감지센서, 온도 감지센서, 스모그 감지센서, CO2 감지센서, O2 감지센서, 장력 감지센서 및 파손 감지센서를 통합 모듈로 개발하고 이를 실시간으로 모니터링 해줌으로써 건물 내부 환경에 대한 스마트 그린빌딩 환경을 구현할 수 있는 시스템을 설계, 개발하였다.

이용자 행태 기반 복합건축 보행자 통합동선계획 (The Pedestrian Integrated Circulation System in Mixed-use Building based on User Behavior)

  • The purpose of the study is to be the pedestrian integrated circulation system of malling route and the third route in Mixed-use Building based on User Behavior. The study has performed by the following approaches: Initially, literature reviews are performed related to a pedestrian route by user in mixed-use building. Second, general and stroller users moving route are analyzed based on the outcome of the case study. Finally, the study develops the efficient pedestrian integrated circulation system of malling route and the third route in Mixed-use Building. According to the study, the following conclusions were made: First, An integrated plan for escalators and EVs, which are accessible to both users and strollers, is needed. Second, The entrance automatic door and circulation elements should be connected for continuous move by the stroller users. Finally, The circulation system of complex buildings should be a simple spatial structure and route plan that users can easily recognize.
