Operating Voltage of Optical Instruments based on Polymer-dispersed Liquid Crystal for Inspecting Transparent Electrodes

  • Optical instruments based on polymer-dispersed liquid crystal (PDLC) have been used to inspect transparent electrodes. Generally the operating voltage of an inspection instrument using PDLC is very high, over 300 V, reducing its lifetime and reliability. The operating-voltage issue becomes more serious in the inspection of touch-screen panel (TSP) electrodes, due to the bezel structure protruding over the electrodes. We have theoretically calculated the parameters affecting the operating voltage as a function of the distance between the TSP and the PDLC, the thickness, and the dielectric constant of the sublayers when the inspection module was away from the TSP electrodes. We have experimentally verified the results, and have proposed a way to reduce the operating voltage by substituting a plastic substrate film with a hard coating layer of smaller thickness and higher dielectric constant.

  • Until the early part of the 1990s, interior design has never been thought important by car makers. Repeated attempts have been made to systemize a technical structure, such as layout, driving method, and size, and the car's interior design has been developed by in simple comparison with the exterior design. In the 1990s, however, this trend began to change because consumers began spending more time in their cars, so the motive of the technology development became that of giving comfort and functional satisfaction to the customers. Observing how a person spends inside his or her car and considering the latest trends in car interiors have made a consumer-oriented sense of value i.e., intensifying the personality of the car's interior design and considering the emotional makeup of the consumer factor in the acquisition of a strategic brand identity. These days, car interiors assume a new concept every year due to the constant change in various factors, and the application of a high-tech design, with a sensing function and a navigation system, to achieve driverless running, is being raised as a key trend element technology for the future. Now, at the present when multilateral concept applications of design are attempted under the direct influences from other fields such as product design, fashion and furniture, I would like to lay stress on investigating and analysing the changes in car interior design varying with the background of the times and formative characteristics from the object point of view. On this study, I would like to compare the background of the times and flow of car interior design with priority given to crash pad and would like to attempt to present the direction of the future car interior design together with diversifying major technical factors.

Testing the Valuation Effect of Foreign Exchange Risk Insurance in Korea (환헤지가 기업가치를 높이는가? : 환변동보험의 기업가치 효과)

  • We investigate whether FX hedging materially increases firm value by testing the valuation effect of Foreign Exchange Risk Insurance in Korea, using our sample of 84 listed firms with 617 observations between 2000 and 2008, Employing Tobin's Q as a proxy of firm value and foreign exchange risk insurance as a proxy of hedging instrument, we find a positive relation between firm value and the use of foreign exchange risk insurance. The hedging premium is statistically significant and is on average 7.4% of sample firm value. We also find our empirical results consistent with the preceding evidence that firm uses the hedging instrument in order to alleviate economic frictions and then hedging causes an increase in firm value.

Determination of Valve Gate Open Timing for Minimizing Injection Pressure of an Automotive Instrument Panel (자동차용 인스트루먼트 패널의 사출압력 최소화를 위한 밸브 게이트 열림 시점 결정)

  • Injection pressure, an important factor in filling process, should be minimized to enhance injection molding quality. Injection pressure can be controlled by valve gate open timing. In this work, we decided the valve gate open timing to minimize the injection pressure. To solve this design problem, we integrated MAPS-3D (Mold Analysis and Plastic Solution-3Dimension), a commercial injection molding CAE tool, to PIAnO (Process Integration, Automation and Optimization), a commercial PIDO (Process Integration, and Design Optimization) tool using the file parsing method. In order to reduce computational cost, we performed an approximate optimization using meta-models that replaced expensive computer simulations. At first, we carried out DOE (Design of Experiments) using OLHD (Optimal Latin Hypercube Design) available in PIAnO. Then, we built Kriging models using the simulation results at the sampling points. Finally, we used micro GA (Genetic Algorithm) available in PIAnO. Using the proposed design approach, the injection pressure has been reduced by 13.7% compared to the initial one. This design result clearly shows the validity of the proposed design approach.

Development of an Instrument based on the Protection Motivation Theory to Measure Factors Influencing Women's Intention to First Pap Test Practice

  • Background: Given that there are many Iranian women who have never had a Pap smear, this study was designed to develop and validate a measurement tool based on the Protection Motivation Theory to assess factors influencing the Iranian women's intention to perform first Pap testing. Materials and Methods: In this psychometric research, to determine the Content Validity Index (CVI) and the Content Validity Ratio (CVR), a panel of experts (n=10) reviewed scale items. Reliability was estimated through the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (n=30) and internal consistency (n=240). Also, factor analysis (exploratory and conformity) was performed on the data of the sample women who had never had a Pap smear test (n=240). Results: A 26-item questionnaire was developed. The CVI and CVR scores of the scale were 0.89 and 0.90, respectively. Exploratory factor analysis loaded a 26-item with seven factors questionnaire (perceived vulnerability and severity, fear, response costs, response efficacy, self-efficacy, and protection motivation (or intention)) that jointly accounted for 72.76% of the observed variance. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated a good fit for the data. Internal consistency (range 0.70-0.93) and test-retest reliability (range 0.72-0.96) of sub-scales were acceptable. Conclusions: This study showed that the designed instrument was a valid and reliable tool for measuring the factors influencing the women's intention to perform their first Pap testing.

Vehicle Maintenance Support System using CAN Communication (CAN 통신을 이용한 자동차 유지관리 지원 시스템)

  • We propose the vehicle maintenance support system to alarm consumable replacement reminders to the vehicle owner. Since the delayed replacement of the consumables makes the condition of the vehicle worse, it is crucial to replace consumables in a recommended period. The vehicle maintenance support system alarms the replacement time, which is set by the vehicle owner, based on the mileage of the installed vehicle. It integrates speed information acquired from the Controller Area Network interface for communication between Electronic Control Unit and instrument panel, exposed at the On Board Diagnostics-II port, to calculate the vehicle mileage. By this, there is no additional wiring required for the system. We verify the system has only 0.28% error by comparing the mileage on the system with the instrument cluster on the vehicle. It automatically enters low-power mode consuming 15mW, which is a negligible amount for the typical conditions of the car, to prevent the vehicle battery from discharging when the ignition is off.

Intergenerational economic mobility in Korea using a quantile regression analysis (한국의 세대 간 경제적 이동성 - 분위수회귀분석을 중심으로 -)

  • This study uses a quantile regression analysis to investigate intergenerational economic mobility in Korea. The analysis is based on data from the 1st through 11th waves of the Korean Labor and Income Panel Study (KLIPS) conducted from 1998-2008. The household nature of the data allows us to link parents' incomes to children's incomes at different points in time. Using a quantile regression analysis instead of mean one reveals that the effect of fathers' earnings are different across the conditional distribution of sons' earnings, particularly being larger on the upper quantile than on the lower quantile. After controlling effect of sons' college education by including a dummy variable for the degree, however, the pattern among quantile effects for fathers' earnings is no longer clear. Instead a new pattern emerges that education has a much larger effect on the upper quantiles than on the lower ones. Using nonparametric estimates of conditional density curves based on the quantile regression results, we derive some interesting features in graphical forms, which are not obvious in numerical analysis.

  • VOR/DME is the short range radio navigation system for much of the world. The navigation with VOR/DME is used for a long time because of its reliability. It can be used for almost all civil aircraft. To simulate the small aircraft's autopilot system based on VOR/DME system, we developed a simulator by using SIMULINK. The output panel of the simulator was developed according to the cockpit instrument of an actual aircraft. To verify the performance of the simulator several scenarios were planned. And we showed that the simulator performed well.

INTELLIGENT MIRROR ADJUSTMENT SYSTEM USING A DRIVER′S PUPILS

  • This paper describes an intelligent mirror adjustment system that rotates a pair of side mirrors and the room mirror of a car to the optimal position for a driver by using the location of the driver's pupils. A stereo vision system measures the three-dimensional coordinates of a pair of pupils by analyzing the input images of stereo B/W CCD cameras mounted on the instrument panel. This system determines the position angle of each mirror on the basis of information about the location of the pupils and rotates each mirror to the appropriate position by mirror actuators. The vision system can detect the driver's pupils regardless of whether it is daytime or nighttime by virtue of an infrared light source. Information about the pair of nostrils is used to improve the correctness of pupil detection. This system can adjust side mirrors and the room mirror automatically and rapidly by a simple interface regardless of driver replacement or driver's posture. Experiment has shown this to be a new mirror adjustment system that can make up for the weak points of previous mirror adjustment systems.

A Design and Application of the Ventilating and Heating System of T-103 Trainer Aircraft for Improvement (T-103 훈련기의 환기와 난방 시스템 개선에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, the ventilating and heating system of T-103 trainer aircraft were investigated and redesigned to improve its poor performance. The ventilation system of the trainer was designed to increase the mass flow rate of fresh air by using air intake valves. The flow-in air through the air intake valve is supplied to the cabin by the ram effect of aircraft and the propeller. And the additional heating system was installed to improve the temperature of the cabin inside. The wasted heat from the exhaust gas of the engines was used as heat source of the additional heating system by installing an heat exchanger around the exhaust nozzle. The additional fresh air and the heated air enter the cabin via two ducts mounted under the instrument panel and behind the pedal in the cabin. The additional ventilating and heating system can be controlled by the first pilot and the secondary pilot individually using the control knob equipped separately. After mounting the additional ventilating and heating system, evaluations such as inspection of parts and component, ground run-up test, in-flight test, user test, etc. were conducted. The result of the tests was sufficient to meet the requirements of the manuals, and the pilots were satisfied with the additionally mounted systems.
