Developing an Evaluation Indicator of Institutional Repositories toward Efficient Distribution Infrastructure of National Knowledge focusing on the dCollection (국가 지식정보의 효율적인 유통체제 구축을 위한 대학 리포지토리 평가 지표 개발: dCollection을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an evaluation indicator of institutional repositories to be used by participating university libraries of dCollection. Based on the literature reviews of digital library evaluation, core evaluation measures and criteria were identified. In order to verify the applicability and appropriateness of those evaluation criteria for institutional repositories, two methods were employed: A case study with sixteen university libraries and a Delphi study with twenty university libraries. The results of both studies led the development of an evaluation model which consisted of four evaluation dimensions and 29 criteria. This evaluation model should be utilized as tools for objective assessment and guidelines for improving institutional repository services by universities libraries in which the dCollection is currently Implemented or the future plan of the dCollection is underway.

  • With the understandings on users' needs and behaviors of university institutional repositories, the purpose of this study is to investigate the user behaviors and to provide some suggestions to improve the university institutional repository. To achieve the purpose of this study, a questionnaires survey was conducted with users in three university institutional repositories including KOSAS, S-Space and DSpace@INHA. Based on the results of the survey analyses, possible improvement areas and suggestions were made such as users' recognition, access point, searching environment, and utilization of university institutional repository.

  • Institutional repositories are essential research infrastructures for research-based universities. A properly dimensioned institutional repository has the potential to increase research impact and enhance the visibility of an institution through its scholarly outputs. The aim of the study reported in this paper was to design and develop a web-based digital repository for scholarly communications using NM-AIST as a case study. The system was developed using open source software. Findings obtained from system validation tests show that the system is a viable solution to the major challenges encountered in the management and sharing of scholarly information at the institution.

  • This study developed a name access point control system for better performance of information retrieval from institutional repositories, which are equipped with authorgenerated metadata processes for self-archiving. In developing name access point control data for the system, the primary data were created from the existing authority. However, unlike the existing authority data, the primary data did not use any authority forms. Instead, the data utilized all the forms provided by the resources as access points. Specifically, field of activity(subject) and title information on authorship were used to distinguish between persons who have the same name. The result showed that the system improved the performance of the information retrieval. The system has been also expected to be utilized over other metadata provided by libraries, in addition to the institutional repositories, in order to provide better quality information.

  • Building institutional repositories is known as one of powerful methods for realizing the open access movement. The Korean Education and Research Information Service(KERIS) proposed to organize institutional repositories into a consortium, called 'dCollection (Digital Collection),' composed of 62 universities since 2003. The purpose of this study is to investigate the current state of 40 member universities of dCollection using the evaluation model including 4 categories and 39 indicators , and, based on the survey outcomes, to pinpoint the procedural or performance weak points of the dCollection systems in order to find its customized solutions focusing on the improvement of use and self-archiving rates.

Harnessing Open Access Databases to Improve Scholarship: Perception of Professionals at the Frontline

  • The study investigated perception of librarians on their roles in using open access databases to improve scholarship. Descriptive survey design was used for the study while questionnaire was employed to collect data from 53 professional librarians at two federal universities in the eastern and western part of Nigeria. Findings from the survey reveal that librarians need to collaborate with faculties to develop institutional repositories and, raise awareness of open access databases in the university community among others. Various factors that could hinder librarians from effectively discharging these roles were identified. Some of which include administrative bottlenecks, poor internet facilities and lack of navigational skills. The study recommends acquisition of necessary knowledge and skills to enable librarians add value to their services and remain at the frontline of information provision.

  • This study examined perceptions of 109 professors at doctorate-granting universities in the U.S. who have self-archived in Institutional Repositories(IRs), predicated on the Diffusion of Innovations Theory. The majority of the faculty learned about IRs through the contact from IR staff or their presentations. Relating to five characteristics of an innovation, digital preservation and usage statistics of an IR were considered to be its relative advantage. The principle of Open Access(OA) was found to have compatibility with the values that professors ultimately pursued. The trialability of an IR was determined by the fact that IRs were adopted by faculty through the participation of pilot projects. Professors who gained positive and visible results from IR adoption seemed more strongly support the repository. In addition, it is necessary for IRs to provide stable and effective services that support the continued adoption of IRs.

  • Researchers' performances have been evaluated by contributing to the academic journals officially, and academic journals expanded both quantitatively and qualitatively since academic societies, publishers, and universities has concentrated on publishing journals. Recently, access and usage of academic information was restricted due to commercialization strategies and sudden rising of prices, and against this situation, OA movement came out arguing that academic information should be open to everyone freely. This article studies the case of KOASAS which is based on DSpace, one of the typical institutional repositories, and intends to show up the necessity to construct repositories in institutions universities and suggest the method to make full use of repositories.

  • The scholarly communication crisis is not a journals crisis, but rather a broader crisis in information communications. It is the loss of access to the scholarly research literature, as the rising cost of STM journal subscriptions far out-strip academic library budgets. Now, the open access as alternatives to traditional journal subscription model are emerging for STM scholarly information. There are basically three forms for OA strategies : Open Access Journals(OAJ), Author Self Archiving(ASA), Academic Institutional Repositories(AIR). This paper describes the current trends and analyses potentially serious limitations and obstacles or various issues of the OA strategies, including the notion of scholarly information as a public good, myths of free access, author pay model, holder of copyright, etc.
