A Fully Digital Automatic Gain Control System with Wide Dynamic Range Power Detectors for DVB-S2 Application (넓은 동적 영역의 파워 검출기를 이용한 DVB-S2용 디지털 자동 이득 제어 시스템)

  • This paper presents a fully digital gain control system with a new high bandwidth and wide dynamic range power detector for DVB-S2 application. Because the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) of DVB-S2 system is so high and the settling time requirement is so stringent, the conventional closed-loop analog gain control scheme cannot be used. The digital gain control is necessary for the robust gain control and the direct digital interface with the baseband modem. Also, it has several advantages over the analog gain control in terms of the settling time and insensitivity to the process, voltage and temperature variation. In order to have a wide gain range with fine step resolution, a new AGC system is proposed. The system is composed of high-bandwidth digital VGAs, wide dynamic range power detectors with RMS detector, low power SAR type ADC, and a digital gain controller. To reduce the power consumption and chip area, only one SAR type ADC is used, and its input is time-interleaved based on four power detectors. Simulation and measurement results show that the new AGC system converges with gain error less than 0.25 dB to the desired level within $10{\mu}s$. It is implemented in a $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process. The measurement results of the proposed IF AGC system exhibit 80-dB gain range with 0.25-dB resolution, 8 nV/$\sqrt{Hz}$ input referred noise, and 5-dBm $IIP_3$ at 60-mW power consumption. The power detector shows the 35dB dynamic range for 100 MHz input.

  • In this Paper a transmitter system for IMr-2000 using feed-forward linearization method was Proposed to linearize power amplifier. The feed-forward structure needs a reference signal to compare and neutralize distortion : this is achieved through the second modulator which is operated at very low input level to obtain a signal with a negligible distortion. Therefore, this structure can reduce distortion of modulator as well as Power amplifier. This is the advantage over the existing system structure. The Proposed transmitter system is designed and simulated by Agilent ADS ver.2002. A two tone test for the system is done at 1.98GHz center frequency with frequency spacing of 2MHz. The reduction of Inter-Modulation Distortion(IMD) is around 49.95dB. This proposed system offers an excellent combination of linearity and simplicity.

Optimal Harmonic Stepped Waveform Technique for Solar Fed Cascaded Multilevel Inverter

  • In this paper, the Optimal Harmonic Stepped Waveform (OHSW) method is proposed in order to eliminate the selective harmonic orders available at the output of cascaded multilevel inverter (CMLI) fed by solar photovoltaic (SPV). This technique is used to solve the harmonic elimination equations based on stepped waveform analysis in order to obtain the optimal switching angles which in turn reduce the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). The OHSW method considers the output voltage waveform as four equal symmetries in each half cycle. In the proposed method, a solar fed fifteen level cascaded multilevel is considered where the magnitude of six numbers of harmonic orders is reduced. A programmable pulse generator is developed to carry the switching angles directly to the semiconductor switches obtained as a result of OHSW analysis. Simulations are carried out in MATLAB/Simulink in which a separate model is developed for solar photovoltaic which serves as the input for cascaded multilevel inverter. A 3kWp solar plant with multilevel inverter system is implemented in hardware to show the effectiveness of the proposed system. Based on the observation the OHSW method provides the reduced THD thereby improving power quality in renewable energy applications.

  • Microcrystalline silicon at low temperatures has been developed using plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD). It has been found that energetically positive ion and atomic hydrogen collision on to growing surface have important effects on increasing growth rate, and atomic hydrogen density is necessary for the increasing growth rate correspondingly, while keeping ion bombardment is less level. Since the plasma potential is determined by working pressure, the ion energy can be reduced by increasing the deposition pressure of 700-1200 Pa. Also, correlation of the growth rate and crystallinity with deposition parameters such as working pressure, hydrogen flow rate and input power were investigated. Consequently an efficiency of 7.9% was obtained at a high growth rate of 0.92 nm/s at a high RF power 300W using a plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition method (27.12MHz).

  • Push-pull structure with balun transformer is presented for load modulation technique which improves the overall efficiency of power amplifier Under the assumption that output impedance of fumed-off amplifier is high, conventional Doherty amplifier is composed of impedance inverter and peaking amplifier, of which operation is controlled by the input power level. In many case, however, impedance of 'off'amplifier is very low due to matching network or parasitic output capacitance. This paper introduces novel load modulation technique which uses low output impedance of 'off'amplifier.   • Recently, a theoretically-sound design approach, using an elastic multilayer model, is attempted in trackbed designs for the construction of high speed railways and new lines of conventional railways. In the elastic multilayer model, the stress-dependent resilient modulus($E_R$) is an important input parameter, that is, reflects substructure performance under repeated traffic loading. However, the evaluation method for resilient modulus using repeated loading triaxial test is not fully developed for practical purpose, because of costly equipment and the significantly fluctuated values depending on the testing equipment and laboratory personnel. In this study, the paper will present an indirect method to estimate the resilient modulus using dynamic properties. The resilient modulus of crushed stone, which is the typical material of sub-ballast, was calculated with the measured dynamic properties and the range of stress level of the sub-ballast, and approximated with the power model combined with bulk and deviatoric stresses. The resilient modulus of coarse grained material decreases with increasing deviatoric stress at a confining pressure, and increases with increasing bulk stress. Sandy soil(SM classified from Unified Soil Classification System) of subgrade was also evaluated and best fitted with the power model of deviatoric stress only.

A New Single Phase Multilevel Inverter Topology with Two-step Voltage Boosting Capability

  • In this paper, a new single phase multilevel inverter topology with a single DC source is presented. The proposed topology is developed based on the concepts of the L-Z source inverter and the switched capacitor multilevel inverter. The input voltage to the proposed inverter is boosted by two steps: the first step by an impedance network and the second step by switched capacitor units. Compared to other existing topologies, the presented topology can produce a higher boosted multilevel output voltage while using a smaller number of components. In addition, it provides more flexibility to control boosting factor, size, cost and complexity of the inverter. The proposed inverter possesses all the advantages of the L-Z source inverter and the switched capacitor multilevel inverter like controlling the start-up inrush current and capacitor voltage balancing using a simple switching strategy. The operating principle and general expression for the different parameters of the proposed topology are presented in detail. A phase disposition pulse width modulation strategy has been developed to switch the inverter. The effectiveness of the topology is verified by extensive simulation and experimental studies on a 7-level inverter structure.

  • In the face of accelerating biodiversity loss and its significance in our coexistence with nature, biodiversity is becoming more crucial in sustainable development perspective. To estimate biodiversity in the future which provides valuable information for decision making system especially in the national level, a quantitative approach must be studied forehand as a baseline of the present status. In this study, we developed a large-scale map of Plant Species Richness (PSR, typical indicator of biodiversity) for Young-dong and Pyung-chang provinces. Due to the accessibility of appropriate data and advance of modelling techniques, reduction of variables without deteriorating the predictive power is considered by applying Genetic algorithm. In addition, a number of Correctly Classified Instances (CCI) with 10-fold cross validation which indicates the predictive power, was carried out for evaluation. This study, as a fundamental baseline, will be beneficial in future land work as well as ecosystem restoration business or other relevant decision making agenda.

  • This paper provides an novel two-stage LED driver circuit for LED lighting equipment. The proposed driver circuit reduces voltage stress in LED driver circuit by using multi-level output voltage of PFC flyback converter. The proposed circuit satisfies IEC61000-3-2 class C regulation that is applied to lighting equipment over 25W and uses PWM to control brightness of wide extent. In this paper, the principle of proposed driver circuit is presented. A prototype has been built and tested. The experimental results are presented to show the validity of the proposed circuit.

Sum Rate Approximation of Zero-Forcing Beamforming with Semi-Orthogonal User Selection

  • In this paper, we present a closed-form approximation of the average sum rate of zero-forcing (ZF) beamforming (BF) with semi-orthogonal user selection (SUS). We first derive the survival probability associated with the SUS that absolute square of the channel correlation between two users is less than the orthogonalization level threshold (OLT).With this result, each distribution for the number of surviving users at each iteration of the SUS and the number of streams for transmission is calculated. Secondly, the received signal power of ZF-BF is represented as a function of the elements of the upper triangular matrix from QR decomposition of the channel matrix. Thirdly, we approximate the received signal power of ZF-BF with the SUS as the maximum of scaled chisquare random variables where the scaling factor is approximated as a function of both OLT and the number of users in the system. Putting all the above derivations and order statistics together, the approximated ergodic sum rate of ZF-BF with the SUS is shown in a closed form. The simulation results verify that the approximation tightly matches with the sample average for any OLT and even for a small number of users.
