Although the stall stagnation phenomena have often been experienced in site and also analytically in numerical experiments in surges in systems of compressors and flow paths, the fundamental causes have not been identified yet. In order to clarify the situations, behaviours of infinitesimal disturbance waves superposed on a main flow were studied in a simplified one-dimensional flow model. A ratio of the amplifying rate of the system instability to the characteristic slope of the compressor element was surveyed as the instability enhancement factor. Numerical calculations have shown the following tendency of the factor. In the situation where both the sectional area ratio and the length ratio of the delivery flow-path to the suction duct are sufficiently large, the enhancement factors are greater in magnitude, which means occurrence of ordinary deep surges. However, in the situation where the area ratio and/or the length ratio is relatively smaller, the enhancement factor tends to lessen significantly, which situation tends to suppress deep surges for the same value of the characteristic slope. It could result in the stall stagnation condition. In the domain of area ratio vs. length ratio of the delivery duct to the suction duct, contour-lines of the enhancement factor behave qualitatively similar to those of the stall stagnation boundaries of a fan analytically obtained, suggesting that a certain range of the enhancement factor values could specify the stagnation occurrence. The significant decreases in the factors are observed to accompany appearances of phase lags and travelling waves in the wave motions, which macroscopically suggests breaking down of the complete surge actions of filling and emptying of the air in the delivery duct. The strength of the action is deeply related with acoustic interferences and is evaluated in terms of the volume-modified reduced resonance frequency proposed by the author. These observations have shown the fundamental cause and the sequence of the stall stagnation in principle.

Terzaghi's one-dimensional consolidation theory has some important assumption, which can't be applicable to predict the behavior of soft clay ground. Especially, predictions using infinitesimal strain and linear material function related with permeability can give rise to mistake in comparison with the result of real behavior in site. For this reason, Gibson et al. established a rigorous formulation for the one-dimensional nonlinear finite strain consolidation theory, which can consider non-linearity of material function. But it is difficult to apply this theory to predict the behavior of common soft clay ground with vertical drain. In this study, consolidation model which can consider the vertical and horizontal flow of a fully saturated clay layer, self-weight of soil and nonlinear characteristics of compressibility and permeability are derived. Numerical analysis scheme, which can be applied to consolidation analysis by derived consolidation model in this study was developed. The characteristics of material function were examined using laboratory testing such as standard consolidation test, Rowe-cell test and modified consolidation test.

This paper discusses the feasibility of ultrasonic C-scan technique for nondestructive evaluation of spot weld quality. Ultrasonic evaluation for spot weld quality was performed by immersion method with the mechanical and the electronic scanning of point-focussed ultrasonic beam(25 MHz). For the sake of the approach to the quantitative measurement of nugget diameter and the discrimination of the corona bond from nugget, preliminary infinitesimal gap experiment by newton ring is tried in order to set up the optimum ultrasonic test condition. Ultrasonic image data obtained were confirmed and compared by optical microscope and SAM(Scanning Acoustic Microscope) observation of the spot-weld cross section. The results show that the nugget diameter can be measured with the accuracy of 1.0mm, and voids included in nugget can be detected to $10{\mu}m$ extent with simplicity and accuracy. Finally, it was found that it is necessary to make a profound study of definite discrimination of corona bond from nugget and the approach of quantitative evaluation of nugget diameter by utilizing the various image processing techniques.
Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a representative compound of chlorophenol derivatives which are especially toxic and potentially carcinogenic compounds in the priority pollutant list of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency, USA). The aim of this study was to investigate an analysis method of PCP in infinitesimal quantity retained in paper. PCP in paper was pretreated by solid phase extraction (SPE) in a phenyl cartridge. The extracted sample was acetylated or silylated and analyzed with GC/MS-SIM. The detection sensitivity of silylated PCP was improved significantly when compared with those of PCP itself and acetylated PCP. As a test specimen, an office paper and a wallpaper were used.

This paper presents a stiffness modeling of a low-DOF parallel robot, which takes into account of elastic deformations of joints and links, A low-DOF parallel robot is defined as a spatial parallel robot which has less than six degrees of freedom. Differently from serial chains in a full 6-DOF parallel robot, some of those in a low-DOF parallel robot may be subject to constraint forces as well as actuation forces. The reaction forces due to actuations and constraints in each serial chain can be determined by making use of the theory of reciprocal screws. It is shown that the stiffness of an F-DOF parallel robot can be modeled such that the moving platform is supported by 6 springs related to the reciprocal screws of actuations (F) and constraints (6-F). A general $6{\times}6$ stiffness matrix is derived, which is the sum of the stiffness matrices of actuations and constraints, The compliance of each spring can be precisely determined by modeling the compliance of joints and links in a serial chain as follows; a link is modeled as an Euler beam and the compliance matrix of rotational or prismatic joint is modeled as a $6{\times}6$ diagonal matrix, where one diagonal element about the rotation axis or along the sliding direction is infinite. By summing joint and link compliance matrices with respect to a reference frame and applying unit reciprocal screw to the resulting compliance matrix of a serial chain, the compliance of a spring is determined by the resulting infinitesimal displacement. In order to illustrate this methodology, the stiffness of a Tricept parallel robot has been analyzed. Finally, a numerical example of the optimal design to maximize stiffness in a specified box-shape workspace is presented.

At present the general trend of modern electronics is toward smaller packages and high performance. As an antenna requires high powers, the EMC(Electromagnetic Compatibility) problems of the transmission line stage is becoming crucial day by day. In this paper, a transmission line excited by the electromagnetic fields from an infinitesimal electric dipole antenna is analyzed using the modified telegrapher's equations. The analytical equations are derived for arbitrarily positioned electric dipole with reference to a transmission line. To verify our approach, the induced voltage and current at the terminal were computed by the proposed approach and compared with those obtained by the electromagnetic simulation solver. Furthermore, the induced currents at the terminal of a transmission line excited by the electric dipoles at various positions were investigated using our approach.

In this paper, we proposed a novel ethanol concentration sensor using microfluidic metamaterial absorber. The metamaterial absorber comprises a split-ring-cross resonator(SRCR) and a microfluidic channel. The SRCR can generate LC resonance that is very sensitive to changes in the effective dielectric constant around the capacitive gap. In addition, microfluidic channels can change the effective dielectric constant of the dielectric substrate by using an infinitesimal quantity of a liquid on the order of microliters. The proposed absorber can detect the electrical properties of different concentration of ethanol. The performance of the proposed absorber is demonstrated using the absorption measurements of a fabricated prototype sample with waveguides. In addition, the simulated results and measurement results show good agreement.

The present paper develops finite element procedures to calculate displacements, strains and stresses in initially stressed elastic solids subjected to static or time-dependent loading conditions. As a point of departure, we employ Hamilton's principle to obtain nonlinear equations of motion characterizing the displacement in a solid. The equations of motion reduce to linear equations of motion if incremental stresses are assumed to be infinitesimal. In the case of linear problem, finite element solutions are obtained by Newmark's direct integration method and by modal analysis. An analytic solution is referred to compare with the linear finite element solution. In the case of nonlinear problem, finite element solutions are obtained by Newton-Raphson iteration method and compared with the linear solution. Finally, the effect of the order of Gauss-Legendre numerical integration on the nonlinear finite element solution, has been investigated.

The current from the feed motor of a machine tool contains substantial information about the machining state. There have been many researches that investigated the current as a measure for the cutting farces. However it has been reported that this indirect measurement of the cutting farces from the feed motor current is only feasible in low frequency. In this research, it was presented that the bandwidth of the current monitoring can be expanded to 130 Hz. And the unusual behavior of the current was examined in this bandwidth. The cross-feed directional cutting force influences the machined surface of the workpiece, which makes it necessary to estimate this force to control the roughness of the machined sulfate. The current exists in the stationary feed motor, and it can give the useful information on the quality of the machined surface. But the unpredictable behavior of the current prevents applying the current to prediction of the cutting state. Empirical approach was conducted to resolve the problem. As a result, the current was shown to be related to the accumulation of the accumulation of the infinitesimal rotation of the motor. rotation of the motor. Subsequently the relationship between the current and the cutting force was identified.
This paper analyzes the price-selection problem under priority-based scheduling for QoS (Quality of Service) network services, i.e., how to determine the price associated with each service level. In particular, we focus on the problems with the pricing mechanism based on equilibrium analysis. We claim that the assumptions needed to produce equilibrium nay not hold in some important environments. Specifically, (a) the individual user's impact on the system is not infinitesimal and (b) users do not always have up-to-date global system-status knowledge crucial for optimal user decisions required for equilibrium. These may make the equilibrium models inaccurate in realistic environments. We examine the accuracy of some existing equilibrium methods by using a dynamic model that we have developed for system behavior analysis. The analysis indicates that equilibrium methods fail to model accurately the system behavior in some realistic environments.
