  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are released from various sources and are unsafe for human health. Porous materials are promising candidates for the adsorption of VOCs owing to their increased ratio of surface area to volume. In this study, activated carbon (AC) impregnated cellulose acetate (CA) electrospun mats were synthesized using electrospinning for the removal of VOCs from the air mixture of ACs, and CA solution was electrospun at different proportions (5%, 10%, and 15%) in a single nozzle system. The different AC amounts in the electrospun mats were distributed within the AC fibers. The adsorption capacities were measured for acetone, benzene, and dichloromethane, using quartz crystal microbalance. The results elicited an increasing adsorption capacity trend as a function of the impregnation of ACs in the electrospun mats, while their capacities increased as a function of the AC concentration. Dichloromethane resulted in a faster adsorption process than acetone and benzene owing to its smaller molecular size. VOCs were desorbed with the N2 gas purging, while VOCs were adsorbed at higher temperatures owing to the increased vapor pressures. The adsorption analysis using Dubinin-Astakhov equation showed that dichloromethane is more strongly adsorbed on mats.

  • The present study has evaluated the $CO_2$ adsorption amount of activated carbon pellets (AC). Coconut shell based test AC were modified with surface impregnation of glycine, glycine metal salts and monoethanolamine for low level $CO_2$ (3000 ppm) adsorption. Physical and chemical properties of prepared adsorbents were analyzed and the adsorbed amount of $CO_2$ was investigated by using pure and 3,000 ppm $CO_2$ levels. The impregnation of nitrogen functionalities was verified by XPS analysis. The adsorption capacity for pure $CO_2$ gas was found to reach upto 3.08 mmol/g by AC-LiG (Activated carbon-Lithium glycinate), which has the largest specific surface area ($1026.9m^2/g$). As for low level $CO_2$ flow the primary amine impregnated adsorbent showed 0.26 mmol/g of adsorption amount, indicating the highest selectivity. An adsorbent with potassium-glycine salts (AC-KG, Activated carbon-Potassium glycinate) instead of amine presented with 0.12 mmol/g of adsorption capacity, which was higher than that of raw activated carbon granules (0.016 mmol/g).

  • In this study, an exhaust filter unit for removing bad smells is designed and manufactured to understand the characteristics, damages, and effects on humans and animals of bad smell substances in laboratory animal breeding facilities. Using the exhaust filter unit, a deodorization performance test using ammonia gas, as a typical bad smell in an animal breeding room, was carried out for three types of activated and impregnated charcoal filters. The experimental results showed that the pressure loss of the HEPA and carbon filter was increased with flow rate and that the average deodorization performance for the case where an impregnated carbon filter was installed was a maximum value of between 93 and 96%, with various fractional flow rates ranging from 1,500 to $3,500m^3/h$ in a laboratory animal breeding room. The experimental results will also be used for the design and manufacture of a practical and efficient exhaust filter unit to cope with bad smell problems in animal breeding facilities.

  • Removal efficiency of methyl iodide at high temperature process by TEDA-impregnated activated carbon used for radioiodine retention in nuclear facility was experimentally compared with that of silver ion-exchanged synthetic zeolite(AgX), In temperature ranges of$30^{\circ}C$ to $400^{\circ}C$, adsorption capacity of un-impregnated carbon was sharply decreased, but TEDA-impregnated carbon showed similar values of adsorption capacity of AgX even around $100^{\circ}C$. Especially, loading amount of methyl iodide on TEDA carbon up to$250^{\circ}C$ represented higher values compared to un-impregnated carbon. Breakthrough curves of methyl iodide in fixed bed packed with AgX and TEDA-impregnated carbon at high temperature was compared. Removal mechanism of methyl iodide on AgX was proposed, based on analysis of by-product gas generated from adsorption reaction.

  • Oak wood based activated carbon was modified with surface impregnation of $Fe^{3+}$ and $Al^{3+}$ metal ions mixture for enhancements of phosphate adsorption capacity in aqueous solution. The phosphate adsorption capacity of the prepared metal impregnated carbon (MC) was about 8 times higher than that of the original activated carbon (OC). Adsorption equilibrium capacities of the phosphate increased with increasing system temperature. The adsorption equilibrium isotherm of phosphate on the prepared MC could be represented by the Langmuir equation. Thermodynamic parameters also indicated that adsorption system was spontaneous and endothermic reaction. The internal diffusion coefficient was measured to analyze the adsorption behavior and kinetic rate. To determine the internal diffusion coefficient, pore diffusion model (PDM) was employed and the result was in good agreement with experimental data.

  • The methyl iodide (CH3I) removal performance of tri-ethylene-di-amine impregnated activated carbon (TEDA-AC) used in the air cleaning unit of nuclear power plants (NPPs) should be maintained at least 99% between 24 month-performance test period. In order for evaluating the effectiveness of TEDA-AC on the removal performance of CH3I in nuclear power plant during the operation of NPPs, the long-term test for up to 15 months was carried out under the simulated operating conditions (e.g., 25 ℃, RH 50%, ppb level poisoning gases injection) at nuclear power plants (NPPs). The TEDA-AC samples were analyzed with the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area and TEDA content as well as CH3I penetration test. It is clearly evident that more than 99% of CH3I removal performance of TEDA-AC was observed in the TEDA-AC samples during 15 months of long-term operation under the simulated NPP operating conditions including the ppb level of organic and oxide form of poisoning gases. BET specific surface area and TEDA content that can affect the CH3I removal performance of TEDA-AC were also maintained as those in new TEDA-AC during 15 months of long-term operation.

  • The zeolite crystals were synthesized by hydrogel process into the pore of activated carbon. The effect of activated carbon in the course of the crystallization of zeolite was investigated. The phenomena of impregnation of zeolite crystals into the pore of the activated carbon were also examined. The results show that in case of the addition of 5% of activated carbon to the aluminosilicate gel including the mole composition of zeolite A, zeolite A was purely synthesized without the existence of other type of zeolite. However, in case of the addition of 20% of activated carbon, zeolite X was purely synthesized. In the pore mouth and internal of activated carbon, zeolite crystals having the size under $1{\mu}m$ was observed. From the results of the pore size and particle size distributions, it was confirmed that the synthetic sample was the composite material impregnated by the zeolite crystals into the pore of activated carbon, not the simple mixture of zeolite and activated carbon.

  • Fe(III)-impregnated activated carbon (Fe-AC) was applied in the treatment of synthetic wastewater containing Cu(II). To investigate the stability of Fe-AC at acidic condition, dissolution of Fe was studied with a variation of solution pH ranging from 2 to 4. Fe-AC was unstable at pH 2, showing a gradual increase of the dissoluted Fe as reaction time increased, while negligible amount of Fe was dissoluted above pH 3. This stability test suggests the applicability of Fe-AC in the treatment of wastewater above pH 3. Adsorption capacity of Cu(II) onto activated carbon (AC) and Fe-AC was investigated in a batch and a column test. In the adsorption kinetics, rapid adsorption of Cu(II) onto AC and Fe-AC was noted at initial reaction time and then reached a near complete equilibrium after 6 hrs. Adsorption trends of Cu(II) onto AC and Fe-AC were similar, showing an increased Cu(II) adsorption at higher pH. Compared with AC, Fe-AC showed a greater Cu(II) adsorption over the entire pH range studied in this research. From the adsorption isotherm obtained with variation of the concentration of Cu(II), the maximum adsorption capacity was identified as 61,700 mg/kg.
