A Comparative Study on the Outside form of Numeral Idioms in Chinese and Korean (한(韓)·중(中) 수사성어(數詞成語)의 외부형식(外部形式) 비교(比較) 연구(硏究))

  • The idiom is the fixed phrase with the traits of stable patterns, habitual uses, historic and ethnical characteristics. The numeral is categorized under the substantial, it represents the quantity or sequence, it can be divided into cardinal numerals and ordinal numerals. Although a considerable of the Korean numeral idioms generated from Chinese numeral idioms, however, due to various factors such as different historical background, customs, and language structure, in the long term, Korean and Chinese numeral idioms formed different characteristics in many aspects. This paper mostly examines the outside form of numeral idioms in Korean and Chinese. The aim is to summarize the different system of Korean and Chinese by analyzing the rules of the numeral idioms in Korean and Chinese.

  • Canonical idioms are in general syntactically opaque and semantically non-compositional. However, there also exist many idioms whose component parts are rather morpho-syntactically transparent and semantically decomposable. This paper identifies two types of Korean idioms and review their basic properties. Based on these empirical studies, the paper then proposes a constraint-based approach that can allow us to process these two different types of idioms.

Classification and Intensity Assessment of Korean Emotion Expressing Idioms for Human Emotion Recognition

  • Objective: The aim of the study was to develop a most widely used Korean dictionary of emotion expressing idioms. This is anticipated to assist the development of software technology that recognizes and responds to verbally expressed human emotions. Method: Through rigorous and strategic classification processes, idiomatic expressions included in this dictionary have been rated in terms of nine different emotions (i.e., happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, disgust, interest, boredom, and pain) for meaning and intensity associated with each expression. Result: The Korean dictionary of emotion expression idioms included 427 expressions, with approximately two thirds classified as 'happiness'(n=96), 'sadness'(n=96), and 'anger'(n=90) emotions. Conclusion: The significance of this study primarily rests in the development of a practical language tool that contains Korean idiomatic expressions of emotions, provision of information on meaning and strength, and identification of idioms connoting two or more emotions. Application: Study findings can be utilized in emotion recognition research, particularly in identifying primary and secondary emotions as well as understanding intensity associated with various idioms used in emotion expressions. In clinical settings, information provided from this research may also enhance helping professionals' competence in verbally communicating patients' emotional needs.

Influence of Familiarity for Idiom, Gender Difference, Academic Achievement on the Abilities of Idiom Comprehension (관용어의 친숙도, 성별, 학업성취도가 관용어 이해하기 능력에 미치는 영향)

  • The present study is to investigate the changes of idioms comprehension ability according to the familiarity of idiom, gender and academic achievements. 50 idioms were divided familiar and unfamiliar by the survey. The subjects was 18 years old, 63 college students. The participants were assessed with the task. The task is about the idiom comprehension with 25 familiar idioms and 25 unfamiliar. And there investigated about the academic achievements on participants. The result were as follows: Frist, there was significant difference in the idioms comprehension ability according to the familiarity of idiom. Second, there was on significant difference in the idioms comprehension ability according to gender. Third, there was significant difference in the idioms comprehension ability according to academic achievements. The result of present study will be important data for Korean idiom education of foreigner.

A Study of Frequency and Distribution of Lexical Items for the Assessing of Vocabulary Richness (어휘 풍요도 측정을 위한 관용 표현의 빈도와 분포 연구)

  • This study aims to make a practical list of lexical items for the assessing of vocabulary richness. For this, in this study, we extract practical examples from written and spoken corpus to create a practical list. And we aimed to examine their distribution in various text types. Traditional assessing of vocabulary richness mainly deals with words. But this study was carried out to include lexical items in assessing vocabulary. Though we could not present all list of lexical items in the limit of the space, this list will be used to measure vocabulary diversity in future learner outcomes. In this paper, the emergence patterns of idiomatic expressions are compared against the register of written and spoken language, and the distribution of 7 registers of written text and the distribution of 4 registers of spoken text were examined. As a result of the analysis of written corpus, the most diverse types of idioms were used in the novel and quasi - verbal. And The fewest types were used in textbooks. Based on the number of token, literary genres such as novels, essays, and quasi - languages showed high use. In the case of collocation, more types were used in quasi - grammar and essay than in novel. But the number of tokens was often used in the order of novel, quasi-grammar, and essay. The use of idioms in spoken corpus was most widely used in private monologues. The number of tokens of idioms appeared higher in public and private conversations than monologues. The use of collocation was also the most diverse in private monologues, as in idioms, and the number of tokens was greater in monologues than conversations, unlike idioms. It is expected that more meaningful results will be obtained if this inverse study is extended to a more diverse text type.

Cliche Analysis for English-Korean Interpretation and Translation Training : Mainly on Shakespeare's Works Texts (영·한 통번역 교육을 위한 클리셰(cliche) 분석 : 셰익스피어 극 텍스트를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze the cliche for English-Korean interpretation and translation training with special reference to the cliche based on Shakespeare's works texts. The term of 'idioms' are generally used as figurative expressions instead of the term of 'cliche'. Thus, cliches must be reinterpreted in the lexicon that are used in useful expressions. Cliches are often idioms. Idioms are figurative phrases with an implied meaning; the phrase is not to be taken literally. This causes difficulty when translating to another language because the meaning may not be understood by people within that culture. Cliches are figurative or literal expressions and are overused expressions. Consequently, the cliches are distinguished from the idioms by the transparent meanings. This study was examined based on the cliches shown in Shakespeare's works texts. After all, anyone who wants to become an efficient English learners, interpretor and translator should be familiar with cliches. They had better use the cliche in English learning site. I hope this study will be helpful even a bit to his attempt.

A Study on the list of Chinese Characters Idioms with Korean Education Selected for Married Immigrant Women (결혼이주여성 대상 교육용 한자성어 목록 선정 방안)

  • In South Korea nowadays, Among the married immigrant women in Korea, the proportion of long-term residents living in Korea for more than 10 years is increasing continuously(48%), while the proportion of short-term residents who are under 5 years is decreasing(16%). However, Korean language education and related research in the Marriage and Immigration Women's Center are still focused on the initial immigrants. Therefore, we should classify married immigrant women according to their stay time in Korea, so that Korean language education and teaching materials need to be more diversified. This study focuses on married immigrant women with intermediate and advanced Korean proficiency and chooses a catalogue of Chinese characters idioms to explore the possibility and educational value of using Chinese characters Idioms in Korean education. According to the research results, Chinese characters idiom education can help married immigrant women in Korean language learning and information acquisition, interpersonal relationships and life attitudes, cultural understanding and social adaptation, child rearing and learning guidance. This is the important part of Korean language education that needs to be guided by married immigrant women. Based on this, 130 Chinese characters idioms in Korean language education and textbook development centered on married immigrant women were selected and catalogue edited in four stages. It is hoped that the results of this study will serve as a reference for Korean language education research and textbook development for married immigrant women in the future.

Attributes and references to honey bees (Insecta; Hymenoptera; Apidae) and their products in some Asian and Australian societies' folkloristic domains

  • Background: References to insects in myths, stories, and idioms can be found in almost any culture, but with regard to references involving honey bee species in the Asia-Australian region, little information is available. Such references to bees can be highly informative by revealing attitudes of admiration, fear, ignorance, or even revulsion towards these insects. Results: The subject is briefly reviewed and examples of references to bees of selected cultural communities are given. Although folkloristic references to honey bees were found to be mostly positive highlighting fearlessness, cleverness, and industriousness of the bees, some also touch upon their ability to cause pain. Conclusions: Owing to the decreasing contacts and increasing alienization regarding insects generally, a plea is made to collect whatever information is still available about references to bees in songs, myths, stories, proverbs, and idioms and to compare such uses from different regions, e.g., North and South Korea. This would support other fields of research aiming to discover and to describe cultural relationships, migrations, and contacts between different peoples of the Asian/Australian region.

Reproducing Rhythmic Idioms: A Comparison Between Healthy Older Adults and Older Adults With Mild Cognitive Impairment (리듬꼴에 따른 건강 노인과 경도인지장애 노인의 리듬 재산출 수행력 비교)

  • This research was conducted to compare the rhythm reproduction abilities between older adults with and without mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and analyze the abilities depending on the rhythm idiom. Participants between 60-85 years of age were recruited from senior community centers, dementia prevention centers, and senior welfare centers. A total of 57 participants were included in this study: 27 diagnosed with MCI and 30 healthy older adults (HOA). The experiment was conducted individually in a private room in which a participant was given random binary time rhythm idioms and instructed to reproduce the rhythmic idioms with finger tapping. Each participant's beat production was recorded with the Beat Processing Device (BPD) for iPad. BPD calculated rhythm reproduction as measured through rhythm ratio and error among beats. Results showed marginal differences between the two groups in terms of mean scores of rhythm reproduction abilities. In terms of the rhythm ratio among beats, both groups' highest rhythm reproduction rate was for <♩ ♩>, and their lowest reproduction rate was for <♩. ♪>. In conclusion, there was no significant difference in rhythm reproduction ability between the HOA and MCI groups. However, the study found an interesting result related to performance level of rhythmic idioms. This result provides therapeutic insight for formulating rhythm tasks for older adults.

Relationship of the Ambiguous Idiom Comprehension between Language Ability and Perspective-taking Ability in School-aged Children (학령기 아동의 언어 및 조망수용능력과 중의적 관용어 이해 간 관계)

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the difference across children's grades in the ambiguous idiom comprehension, the relation with the ambiguous idiom comprehension and language, perspective-taking ability, and what the factors which can influence to comprehend the ambiguous idioms is. 70 elementary school students from 1st grade to 6th grade participated in this study. They were classified with 3 groups, A(1st-2nd grade), B(3rd-4th), C(5th-6th) group and tested in the ambiguous idiom comprehension, receptive vocabulary, problem-solving and perspective-taking. Results of this study are followed. First, there was a significant difference in three groups in the ambiguous idiom comprehension task. And there was significant difference between A group and B, C but not between B and C. Second, in relation with the ambiguous idiom and language ability, perspective-taking ability, there was positive relation with the ambiguous idiom comprehension and them. Finally, the factors which can influence to comprehend the ambiguous idioms is the receptive vocabulary ability, cue-assumption and resolution-inference ability in problem-solving. And the 3 factors explain 65.3% of ambiguous idiom comprehension ability.
