A study on the condition and perception of smoking in dental Hygienist (치과위생사의 흡연 실태 및 흡연에 대한 인식도 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the condition and perception of smoking in dental hygienist of Korean Dental Hygienists Association. The subjects in this study were dental hygienists who attended a symposium on July 5.2007. after a survey was conducted, the answer sheets from 590 participants were analyzed, and the findings of the study were as follows: 1. As for the reality of smoking, 98.3% were nonsmokers, and 1.7% were smokers. 2. perception of smoking was so high(4.76), 'smoking in pregnancy is bad for embryo(4.88)' was highest, 'dullness of taste(4.56)' was lowest. 3. In the smoking-perception of age, under 23 years was highest(4.78) and it was not shown statistically significant correlation. 4. In the smoking-perception of the school career, dental hygienist from 4-grade system was highest(4.87) and it was shown statistically significant correlation. 5. In the smoking-perception of working place, it was shown in order of health center(4.84${\pm}$0.30), dental department of general hospital dental hospital, dental clinic and it was shown statistically significant correlation. 6. In the smoking-perception of living place, Dae-jeon Chung-nam, Je-joo was highest(4.83${\pm}$0.30) and Seoul was lowest(4.65${\pm}$0.43). It was shown statistically significant correlation.

Development of Korean standard dental hygiene curriculum proposal (한국 치위생(학)과 표준교육과정안 개발)

  • Objectives : In order to make a proposal of a Korean standard dental hygiene curriculum, the job description of the National Health Personnel Licensing Examination Board was analyzed to prepare a job analysis matrix of dental hygienist to select required core competency. Methods : Data were analyzed to test the job validity of dental hygienist and categorize the duties of dental hygienist. A proposal of a standard dental hygiene curriculum was mapped out by making a comparative analysis of the courses necessary for American authorization of dental hygiene curriculum, existing proposals of Korean standard dental hygiene curriculum and the courses of the departments of dental hygiene offered by domestic three-year colleges and four-year universities. Results : Basic medicine courses were reinforced or newly offered to provide an opportunity for students to transfer to a domestic four-year university or to a foreign university. In the field of clinical dental hygiene and practice, preventive dentistry, prophylaxis and practice were integrated, and the names of the related courses were unified to give a chance for students to engage in comprehensive dental hygiene practice. There were different courses for dental clinical science at present. In this proposal, students should earn 125 credits in total. Conclusions : Standard dental hygiene curriculum proposal was required by three-year and four-year colleges across the nation. To make it happen, the original names of dental hygiene courses should be used, and the dental hygiene certification and evaluation institute that is under the umbrella of the Korean Dental Hygienists Association should lay out the standard of the KSDHEP to facilitate the utilization of the standard dental hygiene curriculum proposal.

Education, certification system and extent of duty in dental hygienists of developed countries (일부 선진국 치과위생사의 교육제도, 자격인증제도 및 업무범위)

  • Objectives : The purpose of the study is to investigate the education, certification system, and extent of duty of dental hygienist between Korea and five developed countries including United States, Canada, England, Australia, and Japan. Methods : Internet based access to five developed countries was made and the analysis was done for the definition of occupation, main duties, similar occupations, education policy, job descriptions, license certification system, standards of duty, Q & A management, current status of obtaining certification, and scope of work. Results : United States has a two-year associate degree(AS) and a four-year bachelor degree(BS). Canada has two to three years degree and a two-year course is accepted in england and Australia. In the meanwhile, Korea and Japan have two-year and four-year educational courses. The duty of dental hygienists includes the prevention education for dental health and continuing dental health care. Most of the dental hygienists in Korea and Japan play the assistant roles for the dental surgeons. United States has national board examinations including written examinations, practical examinations, and computer assisted examination. Written and practical examinations are also conducted in Korea. England and Australia have the recognized educational organizations for qualification. Conclusions : Problem based and problem solving skills are the most important in dental hygienist education in Korea. The training of highly competent dental hygienists must be done for the improvement of dental hygiene in Korea in the near future.

The effect of dental hygienist's work environment on job satisfaction and organizational commitment (일부 치과위생사의 근무환경이 직무만족과 조직몰입에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to analyze the descriptive correlation of the commission intended to provide effective working practices to enhance job satisfaction and organizational engagement by examining the work environment of the dental hygienist. Methods: After the IRB approval, the subjects were dental hygienists working for dental hospitals and clinics in Busan from May 1st to May 31th of 2017. And the final 153 questionnaires were analyzed to SPSS 23.0 for windows, SPSS Inc. Chicago, IL. USA. The data was analyzed using average standard deviation, t-test, one-way ANOVA and multiple regression analysis. Results: The average working environment of the subjects was found to be $3.37{\pm}0.53$ points with the average job satisfaction of the subjects of $3.29{\pm}0.50$ points and the average organizational commitment of the subjects of $3.25{\pm}0.59$ points. As the working conditions of the working environment are higher, it revealed that the higher the working environment, the better the job satisfaction. Conclusions: In conclusion, this study showed that the ability to support managers' abilities, leadership, and dental hygienists is the most influential factor in job satisfaction and organizational involvement. Also, hospital administrators are encouraged to provide excellent work and leadership skills to enhance both the quality of work and that of work ethic.

The Relation between the Problem Solving Ability and Satisfaction on Clinical Practice of Dental Hygiene Students (일부 치과위생사의 응급처치 지식, 수행자신감과 대처능력과의 관계)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the knowledge, confidence and coping ability about emergency treatment, and the impact of right knowledge and confidence in practice on coping ability in part of dental hygienists. In addition, we suggest emergency treatment knowledge for develop substantive education program applicable to clinical as required data. Methods: This subjects were 259 dental hygienists working in dental setting Seoul, Gyeonggi-do from June 5 to July 20, 2016. We analyzed the data with frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, pearson correlation coefficient, regression analysis by using SPSS. Results: Emergencies experienced by a dental hygienist in dental practice were fainting, local anesthetic allergies, and seizures. As a result of comparing the first aid knowledge, self-confidence, coping ability according to general characteristics of the study subjects, university graduation was higher than college and 3~5 years of working experience showed higher self confidence(F=3.837, p=0.023). The performance of self confidence and coping ability according to the characteristics of first aid showed high results in first aid training and dental hygienist having CPR license. Based on multiple regression analysis, confidence about emergency treatment is the biggest impact on coping ability(p<0.05). Conclusions: Dental hygienists need to develop and provide programs that can improve the ability of dental hygienists to respond appropriately and promptly in case of emergencies by recognizing the importance of first aid through conservative education.

Comparison of Curriculum between Dental Hygienists and Dentists in Korea (치위생학과와 치의학과의 교육과정 비교)

  • Introduction: All work of dental hygienists in Korea is to be carried out under the supervision of a dentist, but the main tasks of dental hygienists are systematic and sufficiently trained within the college curriculum. The purpose of this study was to compare the curriculum between the Department of Dental Hygiene and the Department of Dentistry to provide a basis for legal revision of the dental hygienist's unique work. Methods: The curriculum was acquired from the homepage of the Department of Dental Hygiene and Dentistry. The curriculum in 23 of 28 dental hygiene schools and 6 of 11 dental schools was identified on the homepage. The swere classified based on the scope of dental hygienist work. Results: The Department of Dentistry has more than twice the number of credits and subjects compared to the Department of Dental Hygiene, and the top subjects belong to the treatment and rehabilitation of dental diseases. However, in the field of preventive dentistry, which is a unique work of dental hygienists, the Department of Dental Hygiene has a score of 9.3 times higher than that of dentistry. In the public oral health field, the oral health education field, and the dental management field, dental hygienists scored twice as high as dentists. Conclusion: Since dental hygienists are receiving more education than dentists in the areas of preventive dentistry, public oral health, oral health education, and dental management, which are unique tasks, it is suggested that the work can be performed independently without supervision of the dentist.

Dental Hygienist's Job Perception of Some Prospective Graduates (일부 치위생학과 졸업예정자의 치과위생사 직무에 대한 인식)

  • Introduction: The legal duties of Korean dental hygienists are different from the actual tasks. These factors cause dental hygienists to experience work stress. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate what tasks the dental hygienist expects to perform. Methods: This study examined the perception of dental hygienists' work on 158 prospective graduates of the 3rd-year and 4th-year course of dental hygiene. The questionnaire about the dental hygienist's duties was prepared based on the job description of dental hygienists by the Korea Health Personnel Licensing Examination Institute. Results: More than 84% said that all of the work in the second job description was possible as dental hygienists. subjects responded that the following items were not dental hygienists' duties: treatment plan based on medical history and dental history, treatment plan based on an intraoral and extraoral examination, treatment plan based on the results of teeth and periodontal examination, analysis of oral health data in community, planning of oral health promotion in community, planing of water fluoridation, reading of radiography, root planing, physical treatment on head and neck, using an ultrasonic device on head and neck, dealing with laser devices, making a temporary crown, suture and stitch-out, and intramuscular injection. Conclusions: Most graduates of dental hygiene departments have recognized that the tasks described in the second job description are dental hygienists' work; therefore, it is necessary to improve the gap between expected work and legal work.

A Systematic Literature Review on Job Satisfaction of Dental Hygienist (치과위생사의 직무만족에 관한 체계적 문헌고찰)

  • This study systematically collected and analyzed the results of previous studies on job satisfaction of dental hygienists and analyzed the job satisfaction measurement tools and related factors. It was conducted according to the systematic review guidelines of PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis), and 44 articles were used in the final analysis. In order to measure job satisfaction, ten measuring tools were used. All the measuring tool were developed overseas and they were modified. As a result of the literature analysis, the higher the job satisfaction, the more negative correlation was found between turnover intention and job stress, and positive correlation was found between organizational commitment and professional occupation. The purpose of this study is to analyze the relationship between job satisfaction and various variables and to investigate the improvement of job satisfaction of dental hygienist based on the results of this study.

Exploring Antecedent Factor that Influence Dental Hygienist's Job Satisfaction and Turnover Intention (치과위생사의 직무만족과 이직의도에 영향을 미치는 선행요인 탐색)

  • Advances in the dental medical field now provide high quality medical service, and thus, it has become important to identify the role of dental hygienists. However, the professional status of dental hygienists has not been acknowledged, and this has resulted in problems such as dissatisfaction and high turnover rates at dental hospitals. This study was undertaken to identify factors that influence dental hygienist job satisfaction and turnover rates. To achieve this we used a synthetic approach incorporating individual (optimism), job (professionalism), and organizational (perceived organizational support) characteristics. Our results showed that optimism, professionalism, and perceived organizational support were positively related to job satisfaction. Furthermore, job satisfaction was found to be negatively related to turnover intension and to partially mediate the effect between POS and turnover intention. We believe the results of this study could be used by dental hospitals to address dental hygienist dissatisfaction and high turnover rates.

A Study on the Convergence Relationship between Motivation and Organizational Fairness and Retention Intention of Clinical Dental Hygienist's (임상치과위생사의 동기부여 및 조직공정성과 재직의도와의 융합적 관계 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to establish the basic data of rational work environment management by grasping the interrelationship between motivation or organizational fairness and retention intention. From March 1, 2019 to April 12, 2019, clinical dental hygienists working in dental hospitals and clinics in Seoul, Gyeonggi, Chungcheong, and Jeonra provinces were sampled as a convenience, using self-informative methods. There was a significant positive correlation between motivation and organizational fairness, and there was a positive correlation with retention intention. Organizational fairness had a positive correlation with retention intention. Therefore, it is necessary to increase the efficiency of the dental hygienists by establishing the working period based on the positive organizational fairness and the application of the active motivation program to increase the dental hygienist's intention.
