The role of platelet-activating factor (PAF) was investigated in intestinal ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) induced acute lung injury associated with oxidative stress. To induce acute lung injury following intestinal I/R, superior mesenteric arteries were clamped with bulldog clamp for 60 min prior to the 120 min reperfusion in Sprague-Dawley rats. Acute lung injury by intestinal I/R was confirmed by the measurement of lung leak index and protein content in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid. Lung leak and protein content in BAL fluid were increased after intestinal I/R, but decreased by WEB 2086, the PAF receptor antagonist. Furthermore, the pulmonary accumulation of neutrophils was evaluated by the measurement of lung myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity and the number of neutrophils in the BAL fluid. Lung MPO activity and the number of neutrophils were increased (p<0.001) by intestinal I/R and decreased by WEB 2086 significantly. To confirm the oxidative stress induced by neutrophilic respiratory burst, gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) activity was measured. Lung GGT activity was significantly elevated after intestinal I/R (p<0.001) but decreased to the control level by WEB 2086. On the basis of these experimental results, phospholipase $A_2\;(PLA_2),$ lysoPAF acetyltransferase activity and PAF contents were measured to verify whether PAF is the causative humoral factor to cause neutrophilic chemotaxis and oxidative stress in the lung following intestinal I/R. Intestinal I/R greatly elevated $PLA_2$ activity in the lung as well as intestine (p<0.001), whereas WEB 2086 decreased $PLA_2$ activity significantly (p<0.001) in both organs. LysoPAF acetyltransferase activity, the PAF remodelling enzyme, in the lung and intestine was increased significantly (p<0.05) also by intestinal I/R. Accordingly, the productions of PAF in the lung and intestine were increased (p<0.001) after intestinal I/R compared with sham rats. The level of PAF in plasma was also increased (p<0.05) following intestinal I/R. In cytochemical electron microscopy, the generation of hydrogen peroxide was increased after intestinal I/R in the lung and intestine, but decreased by treatment of WEB 2086 in the lung as well as intestine. Collectively, these experimental results indicate that PAF is the humoral mediator to cause acute inflammatory lung injury induced by intestinal I/R.
Asian lignin was efficiently depolymerized with supercritical ethanol and Ru/C catalyst at various reaction temperature (250, 300, and $350^{\circ}C$). Lignin-oil was subjected to several physicochemical analyses such as GC/MS, GPC, and elemental analysis. With increasing reaction temperature, the yield of lignin-oil decreased from 89.5 wt% to 32.1 wt%. The average molecular weight (Mw) and polydispersity index (Mw/Mn) of lignin-oil obtained from $350^{\circ}C$ (547Da, 1.49) dramatically decreased compare to those of original asian lignin (3698Da, 2.68). This is a clear evidence of lignin depolymerization. GC/MS analysis revealed that the yield of monomeric phenols involving guaiacol, 4-ethyl-phenol, 4-methylguaiacol, syringol, and 4-methysyringol increased with increasing reaction temperature, and these were mostly produced with applying hydrogen gas and Ru/C catalyst (76.1 mg/g of lignin). Meanwhile, the carbon content of lignin-oil increased whereas the oxygen content decreased with increasing reaction temperature, suggesting that hydrodeoxygenation was significantly enhanced at higher temperature.
AISI 4600 Iron powder was mixed with 0~1.0% phosphor as F$e_2$P powder and/or 0~0.8% carbon as graphite powder in rotating mixer. Mixed powder was pressed 800MPa in double-punch mould. Compacts were sintered at 115$0^{\circ}C$for 30 min. in vacuum or mixed hydrogen and nitrogen gas. Sintered compacts were ground and polished, and etched by 2% nital etchant. The microstructure was observed by image analyzer and optical microscope. Density and microhardness were tested by ASTM B3l2 and Microvickers hardness tester. The results obtained were as follows : (1) As the amount of F$e_2$P powder increased, sintered microstructure showed more densified effect and the grain size was larger. (2) The shape of pore was rounded and the number of pore was decreased by F$e_2$P addition. But mean pore size was larger with F$e_2$P content. (3) Simultaneous alloying addition of F$e_2$P and graphite brought about larger grain growth than respective addition. (4) Sintering atmosphere did not affect the microstructure. (5) Hardness of sintered compact increased with phosphrous and carbon content.

The effect of microencapsulation of maetal hydride (MH) with copper on the electrode performance of a Ni/MH battery has been investigated. The MH electrodes were prepared with a combination of cold press and paste methods. The discharge capacity of the electrode increased with an addition of small amounts if CMC into the electrode, but decreased when heat-treated in an oxygen-free nitrogen flow. The capacity of a Cu-coated $LaNi_5$ electrode was higher than that of LaNi5electrode. The discharge capacity of the electrode prepared with Cu-coated $LaNi_5$ increased with the increase of copper content in the electrode. It is considered that the increase of copper content enhanced the current density on the electrode surface, leading to the increase of the discharge capacity The MH electrode coated by an acidic electroless plating method showed much higher discharge capacity than that using an alkaline electroless plating method. The discharge capacity of the $LaNi_{4.5}Al_{0.5}$ electrode was higher than that of the $LaNi_5$ electrode. Also, the effect of microencapsulation on the deactivation of $LaNi_5$ was studied using an absorption-desorption cycle in CO-containing hydrogen.

In this study, the effects of indium (In) doping in InGaN/GaN multi quantum well (MQW) on photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties were investigated. Each quantum well (QW) layer with controlled In content were grown on sapphire substrate. Before growth of MQW, GaN growth consisted of various stages in the following order: buffer GaN growth, undoped GaN growth, and Si-doped n-type GaN growth. Absorbance of InGaN/GaN MQW having different In composition was higher than that of the InGaN/GaN MQW having a constant In composition. It indicates that InGaN layer having different In composition absorbs light having a broad spectrum energy. These results are in agreement with those in photoluminescence (PL). After evaluation of PEC properties, it demonstrated that InGaN/GaN MQW having different In composition was improved InGaN/GaN MQW having constant In composition in PEC water splitting ability.
Two different types of deep groundwaters occur together in the Jungwon area: $CO_2$-rich water and alkali water. Each water shows distrinct hydrogeochemical and environmental isotopic characteristics. The $CO_2$-rich waters are characterized by lower pH(6.0~6.4), higher Eh (25~85mV) and higher TDS content (up to 3,300 mg/l), whereas the alkali type waters have higher pH (9.1~9.5), lower Eh (-136~-128mV) and lower TDS content (168~254 mg/l). The CO2-rich waters ($Pco_2$=up to 1atm) were probably evolved by the local supply of deep $CO_2$ during the deep circulation, resulting in enhanced dissolution of surrounding rocks to yield high concentrations of $Ca^{2+}, Na^+, Mg^{2+}, K^+\; and \;HCO_3\;^-$ under low pH conditions. On the other hand, the alkali type waters ($Pco_2$=about 10-4.6 atm) were evolved through lesser degrees of simple wate/rock (granite) interaction under the limited suppy of $CO_2$. The alkali waters are relatively enriched in F- (up to 14mg/l), whereas the F- concentration of$CO_2$-rich water is lower (2.2~4.8 mg/l) due to the buffering by precipitation of fluorite. The oxygen-hydrogen isotopes and tritium data indicate that compared to shaltion ($\delta$18O=-9.5~-7.8$\textperthousand$),two different types fo deep groudwaters (<1.0TU)were both derived from pre-thermonuclear (more than 40 years old) meteoric waters with lighter O-H isotopic composition ($\delta$18O=-9.5~-7.8$\textperthousand$) and have evolved through prolonged water/rock interaction. The $CO_2$-rich waters also show some degrees of isotopic re-equilibration with $CO_2$ gas. The $\delta^{34}S$ values of dissolved sulfates (+24.2~+27.6$\textperthousand$) in the $CO_2$-rich waters suggest the reduction of sulfate by organic activity at depths. The carbon isotope data show that dissolved carbon in the $CO_2$-rich waters were possibly derived either from dissolution of calcite or from deep $CO_2$ gas. However, strontium isotope data indicate Ca in the $CO_2$-rich waters were derived mainly from plagioclase in granite, not from hydrothermal calcites.
The properties of the wood pellets from damaged wood by forest fire and sound woods were investigated. Oven-dry densities of pellets made from sound wood and the damaged wood of Pinus densiflora were 0.93~0.94 and 0.86~0.88, respectively. Compressive strength of the pellets from the woods was ranged from 145 to $168kgf/cm^2$, and there was little difference between the sound wood and the damaged wood of P. densiflora. Ash content for the sound wood and the damaged wood of Pinus densiflora were 0.32~0.37% and 0.25~0.35%, respectively, and calorific values of each pellet were ranged from 18 to 19 MJ/kg. The result of elemental analysis in carbon. hydrogen and oxygen showed 45.8~48.8%, 6.2~6.5% and 46.5~48.0%, respectively. Consequently, there seem no significant difference in the properties between damaged and sound wood pellets.
An in vitro gas production technique was used in this study to elucidate the effect of two strains of active live yeast on methane ($CH_4$) production in the large intestinal content of pigs to provide an insight to whether active live yeast could suppress $CH_4$ production in the hindgut of pigs. Treatments used in this study include blank (no substrate and no live yeast cells), control (no live yeast cells) and yeast (YST) supplementation groups (supplemented with live yeast cells, YST1 or YST2). The yeast cultures contained $1.8{\times}10^{10}$ cells per g, which were added at the rates of 0.2 mg and 0.4 mg per ml of the fermented inoculum. Large intestinal contents were collected from 2 Duroc${\times}$Landrace${\times}$Yorkshire pigs, mixed with a phosphate buffer (1:2), and incubated anaerobically at $39^{\circ}C$ for 24 h using 500 mg substrate (dry matter (DM) basis). Total gas and $CH_4$ production decreased (p<0.05) with supplementation of yeast. The methane production reduction potential (MRP) was calculated by assuming net methane concentration for the control as 100%. The MRP of yeast 2 was more than 25%. Compared with the control group, in vitro DM digestibility (IVDMD) and total volatile fatty acids (VFA) concentration increased (p<0.05) in 0.4 mg/ml YST1 and 0.2 mg/ml YST2 supplementation groups. Proportion of propionate, butyrate and valerate increased (p<0.05), but that of acetate decreased (p<0.05), which led to a decreased (p<0.05) acetate: propionate (A: P) ratio in the both YST2 treatments and the 0.4 mg/ml YST 1 supplementation groups. Hydrogen recovery decreased (p<0.05) with yeast supplementation. Quantity of methanogenic archaea per milliliter of inoculum decreased (p<0.05) with yeast supplementation after 24 h of incubation. Our results suggest that live yeast cells suppressed in vitro $CH_4$ production when inoculated into the large intestinal contents of pigs and shifted the fermentation pattern to favor propionate production together with an increased population of acetogenic bacteria, both of which serve as a competitive pathway for the available H2 resulting in the reduction of methanogenic archaea.
Problems appear when triptans are taken orally. For example, the bioavailability of triptan is reduced by the digestive system, and the drug level in the blood reduces rapidly over time; there is also a possibility of gastrointestinal disorder. To improve side effects, a transdermal patch has been prepared in hydrogel form. The polymer matrix that makes up the hydrogel uses PVA; PEG is used as an additive to induce inter/intra hydrogen bonding of the PVA and almotriptan drug is added. In addition, to accelerate micro-phase separation between PVA chains, liquid nitrogen is used. In FT-IR analysis, the absorption bands of PVA, PEG, and almotriptan were found. The degree of crystallinity, the water uptake ability and tensile strength were increased with increasing PEG content. In drug release tests, the amount of drug released increased depending on the PEG content. In this study, hydrogels with 10 wt% PEG showed better performance in drug release. Approximately 60% of the total drug amount was released in 2 hr, and the drug continued to release for 1 day. Thus, the prepared hydrogel patch is suitable as a transdermal formulation for the second dose administration of triptans to patients who require recurrent migraine treatment within 24 hr after the first administration.

In this work, the cure behaviors of the DGEBA/PMR-15 blends initiated by N-benzylpyrazinium hexafluoroantimonate (BPH) as a cationic latent catalyst were performed in DSC and DMA analyses. And, the thermal stabilities were carried out by TGA analysis and their mechanical interfacial properties of blends were measured in the context of critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). As a result, the curing activation energy ($E_a$) determined from Ozawa's equation in DSC and the relaxation activation energy ($E_r$) from DMA were increased with increasing PMA-15 content. Also, the thermal stabilities obtained from the integral procedural decomposition temperature (IPDT) and the glass transition temperature ($T_g$) were highly improved with increasing the PMR-15 content, which were probably due to the high heat resistance. And, the $K_{IC}$ showed a similar behavior with $E_a$, which was attributed to the improving of the interfacial adhesion or hydrogen bondings between intermolecular chains.
