  • Highly accurate surface velocity estimation using modern geodetic techniques plays very important role in the geological and geophysical interpretation. Researches with GPS are ongoing in many countries of the world. This study aims to estimate the amount of crustal deformation and the direction of deformation in the Korean Peninsula and in its neighbor. We used GAMIT that is a comprehensive GPS analysis package developed at MIT. Then, a Global Kalman filter called GLOBK is used to combine the results from GAMIT and to estimate the relative and absolute velocity vector for the crustal deformations. To estimate station velocity accuracy and reliably, it is extremely important to pay great attention to the reference frame. Firstly, using the Suwon (SUWN) of Eurasian plate as main frame, we estimate the relative amount of crustal deformation and a direction of Eurasian plate and North American plate, Secondly, using ITRF 2000 as main frame, we estimate the absolute crustal deformation of Eurasian plate and North American plate. The continent of Eurasian where has the Korean Peninsula deforms 33.36 mm per year to East-Southeast (ESE), and Japanese Tsukuba (TSKB) in North American plate deforms to South-Southwest (SSW). Finally, the Korean Peninsula is approaching the Japanese Island and the rate of horizontal crustal deformation between the Suwon and the Tsukuba is about 31.98 mm per year in the moving direction of N85.9oW (274.1o) for the past three years.

  • Instrumentation system in Concrete Face Rockfill Dam(CFRD) can give special attention to the deformation characteristics of the rockfill and behavior of the concrete membrane during construction, reservoir filling and subsequent phase of operation. It also contains data about vertical and transversal compressibility moduli of the rockfill, deflections in the concrete slab, and draws comparisons with other concrete face rockfill dams of recent construction. In this paper, the internal deformation data from D dam monitored by means of hydrostatic settlements cells are analyzed. Observations cover the construction stage, reservoir filling and up to March 1991. The above method can be concluded D dam was well constructed and maintained.

  • The ordinary differential equations governing free vibrations of elastic horizontally curved beams are derived, in which the effect of shear deformation as well as the effects of vertical, rotatory and torsional inertias are included. Frequencies and mode shapes are computed numerically for parabolic curved beams with the hinged-hinged, hinged-clamped and clamped-clamped ends. Comparisons of natural frequencies between this study and ADINA are made to validate the theories and numerical methods developed herein. The lowest three natural frequency parameters are reported, with and without the effect of shear deformation, as functions of the three non-dimensional system parameters: the horizontal rise to span length ratio, the slenderness ratio and the stiffness parameter.

  • The GPS ability for detecting the deformation is experimently tested by analyzing how precisely GPS can detect the true movement value of the GPS test bed with three axis. As the result, we found that GPS can detect the deformation with the precision of 2 mm in horizontal componts and 8 mm in vertical component for the short baseline of 16 km. The applicable possibilities of GPS for measuring the structure deformation are discussed on the base of this result.

  • When one opens the door of a microwave oven during its operation, twisting deformation of the door occurs, which may cause leakage of microwave through the gap between the door and the front plate. A numerical optimization is implemented to minimize the gap by maximizing twisting stiffness of the door of the oven. Design variables are deformed, which describe the shape of the bead in the horizontal and vertical flanges of the door frame. To minimize the twisting deformation, Two optimal design problems to find shapes of the bead in the flange are established. The problems are solved by a numerical optimization technique, their results being evaluated.

  • For the system of a droplet on an insulator-coated electrode, the Lippmann-Young equation is derived by considering the deformation of interface near the three-phase contact line. The equation governing the deformation of interface, which describes the local balance of the Maxwell stress and the capillary pressure, is integrated along the interface. The integration leads to the Lippmann-Young equation which is shown to represent the macroscopic balance of horizontal force acting on entire meniscus. Young's angle is assumed to be not affected by the Maxwell stress. The meaning and validity of the assumption are discussed.

  • A new method to locate modular fixtures using an optimization technique is proposed. The optimal fixture arrangement is derived to minimize the elastic deformation of a workpiece. That is, a fixture arrangement is regarded better if it minimized the elastic deformation of the workpiece while fixing a workpart of course. In this approach, the workpiece is projected into two dimensional domain to simplify the 3-dimensional fixture arrangement problem into 2-dimensional one. Thus the problem is reduced to find the optimal positions of one horizontal clamp and three locators which minimize the total deformation of the workpiece and the design variables are the location of the contact points between the boundary of the workpiece and the 4-fixels. The Genetic Algorithm is used for the optimization by mapping each design variables to a gene of a chromosome. The fitness value is the total strain energy of the workpiece calculated by the fin element analysis.

  • The subject of this thesis is the vibration response of framed structure for buildings of "damed beam" type. In steel rigid frame with damped beams, web plate in mid span of beams is perforated to form a rectangular opening, only upper and lower flanges being remained. When the frame is subjected to horizontal seismic forces, dominant shearing deformation takes place in the opening part of the beams. Energy absorber in stalled in the opening is driven by relative displacement caused by the shearing deformation and provide the frame with damping force. First, static deformation of portal frames having a beam with the web opening is discussed and formulas of elastic deformation is derived.s derived.

  • For achieving stability and economic construction at a retaining wall construction site, quantitative parameters of soil properties with excavation steps coincides with the actual field site. The main parameters of retaining wall design such as deformation modulus and modulus of horizontal subgrade reaction are common with N value of standard penetration test. Therefore, this study is compared and analyzed about the mutual relationship which is SPT, PBT and PMT for overcoming inconsistency of the existing retaining wall design generalized. In addition, modulus of horizontal subgrade reaction and reduction factor with excavation steps are proposed through back analysis of elasto-plasticity and finite element method with actual field monitoring data. Finally, it is purpose that parameter errors are reduced for applying effective retaining wall design at a construction small and medium-sized.
