  • The purposes of this study are to investigate the determinants of household demand for credit and to test the effects of credit outstandings and credit repayments on consumption expenditures. To investigate the relationship between credit use and consumption expenditures, a theoretical consumption expenditure model including credit outstandings and credit repayments is developed. With 1991 Report of National Survey of Family Income and Expenditure, two empirical models are tested using OLS. The results show that household demand for credit is determined by household income, debt burden, household size, age and squared age of household head and ratio of home ownership. It is also found that credit outstandings affect consumption expenditures positively while credit repayments affect consumption expenditures negatively.

Household financial structures are analyzed by the components of two financial statements(the income and expense statement and the balance sheet statement) and selected financial ratios. The data came from the 1998 Korean Household Panel Study. It was found that the age profiles of household finances such as household income, expenditure, savings and consumption rate, financial assets, real assets and home ownership, debt and net worth usually vary according the householder's occupation. The ratios of debt repayment and the liquidity ratios also vary in part as age changes for each occupational group.

  • The purpose of this study is to clarify multi-habitation, a new phenomenon in which inhabitants in urban areas reside in primarily condominiums on weekdays and retreat to dwellings in rural areas on weekends, and to examine the various life styles related to multi-habitation. Through the interviews and site surveys, three major subtypes of multi-habitation were identified to support the theoretical framework: interchange style, sedentary style, and special style. Findings include that first, in order to discuss multi-habitation, the terms primary home and secondary home are introduced. Based on the concept of primary home and secondary home, a variety of multi-habitation can be described using spatial locations in urban and rural areas. Second, systematic deregulation for the second home ownership should be made to promote citizens' interchange. Also urban residents should make more efforts to integrate into rural communities. Third, for some remote areas such as Cheju Island, it is observed that multi-habitation is limited by cost, time, and lifestyle.
