  • The purpose of this study was to collect information for the improvement of sewing practice classes and to draw implications by carrying out an investigation into the perception and needs of 185 students in the first grade of high school for sewing practice classes. The results of the study are as follows. First, most of the students perceived that the instructional objectives of the practicum as the utilization in everyday life. The students' perception of the class was moderately positive. In terms of the subfactors, the participation level appeared to be the highest while the comprehension level was the lowest. Also, the utilization level showed the greatest difference between male and female students. The results suggest that female students were more positive in their perception of the class than the male students because of the significant difference in the subfactors of class perception, excluding utility and teaching learning method satisfaction. Second, it appeared that the students were likely to use these skills in everyday life as a result of the sewing practice classes. In terms of the practice content, students preferred working individually in terms of organizing their own projects, making their own selections, and freely deciding the size of their products. This study demonstrated that the students preferred teacher-centered classes when acquiring skills and knowledge and student-centered classes when brainstorming and performing the teacher's role. In terms of instructional management, the students preferred four to six 50-minute long lessons per semester and no group work involved.

  • The purpose of this study was to promote emotional coaching communication and to contribute to the mental health of youth by investigating the perceptional discrepancy of emotional coaching between a mother and her child related to the maladjustment of adolescents. Two hundred junior high school students in the second and third grades and their 200 mothers living in Suncheon were purposefully sampled, and the data were analyzed using the program SPSSVIN 21. The results were as follows. First, the mothers' perception appeared to be higher than their children's in emotional coaching communications. Second, pairs of mothers and children were categorized into three types, depending on the degree of their emotional coaching communication. There were more pairs with discrepancies of perception of emotional coaching than pairs with corresponding perceptions. Third, the pairs with corresponding perceptions of emotional coaching showed fewer maladjustment problems. According to the mothers' descriptions, a sneering child appeared to have the worst effect with respect to maladjustment. From these results, it is suggested that education on emotional coaching for mothers should be developed and increased to prevent maladjustment problems of junior high school students.

  • This study surveyed the elementary school teachers' use of visual representations and their perceptions of the functions of visual representations in the teaching of electricity unit. A total of 110 elementary teachers who have experiences in teaching electricity unit responded to online survey. The result showed firstly that most of the teachers use visual representations in their teaching and it is mostly limited to those presented in textbooks or images that they can get easily from internet search. Secondly, elementary teachers thought that they have high ability in using visual representations and low ability in understanding students' visual presentation ability. Thirdly, visual representations are more often preferred to be used as teacher-centered ways than student-centered ways for motivating students and conceptual understanding. However, in case of scientific inquiry, both teacher-centered and student-centered ways were equally preferred. Lastly, the teachers' perceptions of the functions of visual representations were categorized into 'teaching-instrumental function', 'learning-instrumental function', 'communicative-instrumental function' and 8 subcategories were found. The most frequent function was the 'information delivery function' in the 'teaching-instrumental function' category. Implications for teacher education and further studies were discussed.

  • This study explored middle and high school students' learning experiences using e-textbooks in online learning courses. Data were collected from in-depth interviews. The interviewees for this study were 19 students who enrolled voluntarily in an online mathematics and science inquiry program, actively participated in the online learning. The students generally have high academic achievement and motivation for learning in science and mathematics. Data were analyzed based on a grounded theory approach. As a result, the characteristics of the online learning environment using e-textbooks were conceptualized via three different categories including temporal, spatial, and technical. Such characteristics of the learning environment were able to provoke self-directed learning, extended learning, interactive learning, in-depth learning, improved ICT literacy, and formation of positive emotions and learning habits. Most of the learners showed positive feedback towards the use of e-textbooks, while some mentioned the technical limitations compared to conventional paper-based learning. This study suggested that e-textbooks are likely to induce positive experiences for learners in the context of online learning, so it is necessary to design contents that utilize various functions and advantages of electronic teaching materials in order to use e-textbooks effectively.

  • This study investigated the types of analogies generated by science-gifted students, mapping errors on the chromatography, and the perceptions on generating analogy. The subjects were science-gifted eighth-graders (N=68) enrolled at four gifted-education centers in Seoul. Analyses of the results revealed that most science-gifted students represented the analogies using verbal and pictorial forms based on concrete and everyday experiences, and they elaborately explained them including the functional attributes and the causal relationships of the target concept. Science-gifted students selected the analogies having rich similarities or similar structure and principle between the target concept and the analogy as the best of the self-generated analogies. And they used mainly their 'school life' as analogy materials. The results of the mapping test showed that many science-gifted students had mapping errors such as 'failure to map' and 'overmapping'. They were found to have the positive perceptions on generating analogy. The present study will provide the basic information to develop an instructional model in generating analogy in an education program for science-gifted students.

  • In this study, we investigated elementary students' perceptions of digital science textbooks after they used the digital science textbooks based on 2009 national science curriculum. For this study, 103 $3^{rd}$ and $4^{th}$ grade students were participated. They responded to the survey items about use comfortableness and satisfaction of the digital textbook. Descriptive survey and interviews were administered to understand their perceptions of advantages and disadvantages of the digital science textbooks. The analyses of the data show that students' perceptions of the digital science textbooks were positive in general and their satisfaction appeared to be quite high. They perceived the most advantage as having chances to use multimedia like video clips, pictures, and sound. They also mentioned other advantages like viewer functions such as highlights and notes, learning support functions such as supplementary materials and videos for science experiments, and smart pad functions to operate with hands. On the other hand, they pointed out disadvantages that there were many errors and lags in operation. We also discussed the educational implications about improving digital science textbook for effective science learning.

  • This study examined factors influencing college science learning from the perspectives of college students and high school science teachers. Using a survey created based on focus group interviews, college science majors and high school science teachers rated various factors of high school learning that positively influenced college science learning. Findings suggested that the perceptions differed by college major: the physics major students considered math proficiency and logical thinking skills as the important factors; chemistry major students and biology major students considered English proficiency and basic scientific knowledge as the most important factors. Both college students and science teachers emphasized basic science knowledge and math proficiency. However, differences between the two groups were also found in that the students perceived more need to learn about experimentation than the teachers whereas the teachers had a priority in increasing advanced science content.

  • The 2009 Revised National Curriculum introduces plans for the "intensive course completion system". This study investigated students' learning satisfaction with and perceptions of Life Science in the humanities and social science course in general high schools according to the implementation of the intensive course completion system in the 2009 Revised National Curriculum, and analyze relations with gender and with academic achievement levels. The findings are as follows: First, the students in the humanities and social science course recorded an overall low learning satisfaction in Life Science through the intensive course completion system. It was analyzed that they especially found it burdensome to take the lessons four hours per week in one semester according to the system. Second, the students in the humanities and social science course didn't have positive perceptions of a need to study Life Science when considering their future career choices, but they positively perceived when considering its educational benefits. Third, the more learning satisfaction with Life Science they had according to the intensive course completion system, the higher learning perceptions they had. Finally, the girls showed a higher level of learning satisfaction and perception than the boys. The higher their academic achievement was, the higher their learning satisfaction and perception level became.
