Most of the municipal wastewater treatment plants operated in Korea are designed for high concentrations municipal sewage. However, activated sludge process employed by municipal wastewater treatment plant is operated at low organic loading. The objective of this study was to determine optimum operating condition of activated sludge process for treatment of low concentration municipal sewage. Three bench scale activated sludge reactors were operated to investigate the effect of HRT and SRT on the COD and TSS removal efficiency. The average concentration of TSS, SCOD, SBOD and TKN in influent were 118mg/l, 61mg/l, 21mg/l, and 12mg/l, respectively. The activated sludge reactors operated with various HRT and SRT showed about 89-93% TSS removal efficiency. HRT and SRT does not affect the TSS removal efficiency of actvatied sludge process significantly. However, HRT affected the SCOD removal efficiency slightly. As the HRT decreases from 13hours to 3hours, the SCOD removal efficiency decreases from 67% to 56%. The average effluent TCOD concentration of the reactor operated with 3hours of HRT was approximatly 40-45mg/l. Kinetic coefficient yield (Yt) and decay coefficients(Kd) were 0.594-0.954 mgMLVSS/mgCOD and $0.0197-0.0317day^{-1}$, respectively. Low concentration municipal sewage can be treated with 3 hours of HRT without effluent quality deterioration and SRT does not affect the substrate removal efficiency at this operation condition.
In this study, we performed an electrowinning process for effective removal of metals (Cu and Ni) in solution and their recovery as solid forms. A complete removal of Cu and Ni (1,000 mg/L) was observed during four times recycling test, indicating that our electrowinning system can ensure the efficient metal removal with high stability and durability. In addition, we investigated effect of operation parameters (i.e., concentration of boric acid only for Ni, variation of pH, concentration of electrolyte ($H_2SO_4$), and cell voltage) on the efficiency of metal removal (Cu and Ni) during the electrowinning. The addition of boric acid significantly enhanced removal efficiency of Ni as the concentration of boric acid increased up to 10 g/L. Compared to negligible pH effect (pH 1, 2, and 4) on the Cu removal, we observed the increase in removal efficiency of Ni as the pH increased from 1 to 4. The electrolyte concentration did not significantly influence the removal of Cu and Ni in this study. We also obtained great removal rates of Cu and Ni at 2.5 V and 4.0 V, which were much faster than those at lower voltages. Finally, almost 99% of each Cu and Ni (1,000 mg/L) was selectively removed from the mixture of metals by adjusting pH and addition of boric acid after the completion of Cu removal. The findings in this study can provide a fundamental knowledge about effect of important parameters on the efficiency of metal recovery during the electrowinning.
This study aimed at determining the treatability of high-strength wastewater (chemical oxygen demand, COD>4000 mg/L) using combined anaerobic-aerobic granular sludge in lagoon systems. The lagoon systems were simulated in laboratory-scale aerated and non-aerated batch processes inoculated with dried granular microorganisms at a dose of 0.4 g/L. In the anaerobic batch, a removal efficiency of 25% was not attained until the 12th day. It took 14 days of aerobic operation to achieve sCOD removal efficiency of 94% at COD:N:P of 100:4:1. The best removal efficiency of sCOD (96%) was achieved in the sequential anaerobic-aerobic batch of 12 days and 2 days, respectively at COD:N:P ratio of 200:4:1. Sequential anaerobic-aerobic treatment can achieve efficient and cost effective treatment for high-strength wastewater in lagoon systems.
This study intends to evaluate the efficiency of non-point source reduction technique by using the porous lightweight and recycled aggregate which microorganism is seeded. In case of infiltration velocity 30~70 mm/hr in high concentration of influent, it is indicated that SS was 40~94%, COD 44~91%, BOD 4~91%, TN 1.2~66%, TP 7~70% of removal efficiency. Removal efficiency is good in infiltration velocity 30 > 50 > 70㎜/hr order. Therefore, the non-point source treatment facility filled with lightweight and recycled aggregate using microbial seeding shows higher removal efficiency than a conventional sand and gravel. We confirm that the function and efficiency are improved significantly and applied to treat non-point sources.
A study of the treatment of piggery wastes using a multilayered metal-activated carbon system followed by carbon bed filtration was carried out at bench scale. From the physicochemical properties obtained from samples treated with aqueous solutions containing metallic ions such as Ag$^+$, Cu$^{2+}$, Na$^{-}$, K$^+$ and Mn$^{2+}$, main inspections are subjected to isothem shape, pore distribution with micropore, SEM and EDX. Multilayered metal-activated carbons were contacted to waste water to inwestigate the simultaneous catalytic effect for the COD, BOD, T-N and T-P removal. From these removal performance was achieved. The high efficiency of the multilayered metal-activated carbon bed, satisfactory removal performance was achieved. The high efficiency of the multilayered metal-activated carbon bed was derermined by the properties of this material for trapping, catalytic effect and adsorption of organic solid particles.
In this study, the structure and properties of waste oyster shell and its phosphorus removal efficiency were investigated. Waste oyster shells are troublesome environmental waste in the coastal region where the oysters are produced. Waste oyster shells were pyrolyzed by bench-scale rotary kiln for its activation. It shows maximum 76% of phosphorus removal efficiency for the municipal wastewater and livestock wastewater. We found that the activated oyster shells can be used as a phosphorus removal agent with the consideration of high efficiency, easy processing, and cost effectiveness.
Electrokinetic remediation was studied for the removal of toxic heavy metals from tailing soils. This study emphasized the dependency of removal efficiency upon heavy metal speciation, as demonstrated by different extraction methods (sequential extraction, total digestion, and 0.1 N HC1 extraction). The tailing soils examined showed different physicochemical characteristics, in view of initial pH, particle size distribution, and major mineral constituents, and contained high concentrations of target metal contaminants in various forms. The electrokinetic removal efficiency of heavy metals was significantly influenced by their partitioning prior to treatment, and by the pHs of the tailing soils. The mobile and weakly bound fractions of heavy metals, such as exchangeable fraction, were easily removed by electrokinetic treatment (more than 90% in removal efficiency), whereas immobile and strongly bound fractions, such as organically bound and residual fractions, were not effectively removed (less than 20% in removal efficiency).

In this study, high concentrations of cadmium-containing wastewater were treated by electrodialysis (ED) with a channel stack. The limiting current density (LCD), cadmium removal efficiency, and current efficiency were investigated under each experimental condition according to the Reynolds number (Re), membrane area, and pH. With the increase in the film area to 111, 333, 555, and 777 cm2 at Re (109.1), LCDs decreased to 408.11, 44.45, 35.32, and 13.64 A/m2, respectively. The highest cadmium removal efficiency (99.6%) and current efficiency were obtained for the membrane area of 111 and 777 cm2, respectively. Under changing Re in the pH range of 1 to 4, Re and LCD were proportional under the same pH condition, and pH and LCD tended to be inversely proportional under the same Re condition. Cadmium removal rate was the best at the pH range 3 - 4. It has been found that ED with channeled stacks can be successfully applied to treat wastewater containing high concentrations of cadmium.

The paint removal and recoating are the very important process in airplane maintenance. The traditional technology is to use the chemical way corroding the paint with paint remover. For changing the defects, corrosion & pollution & manual working, of the traditional technology, the physical process which removes the paint of airplane with 250MPa/250kW ultra-high pressure rotary water jetting though the surface cleaner installed on the six axes robot is studied. The paint layer of airplane is very thin and close. The contradiction of water jetting paint removal is to remove the paint layer wholly and not damage the surface of airplane. In order to solve the contradiction, the best working condition must be reached through tests. The paint removal efficiency with ultra-high pressure and move speed of not damaged to the surface. The move speed of this test is about 2m/min, and the paint removal efficiency is about $30{\sim}40m^2/h$, and the paint removal active area is 85-90%. No-repeat and no-omit are the base requests of the robot program. The physical paint removal technology will be applied in airplane maintenance, and will face the safety detection of application permission.
In this study, we evaluated the treatment efficiency of livestock wastewater by altering the current density using boron-doped diamond (BDD) electrodes. As the current density was adjusted from 10 to 35 mA/cm2, the removal efficiency of organic matter increased from 22.2 to 71.5%. Similar to that of organic matter, the removal efficiency of color increased with increasing current density up to 85.7%, indicating a higher removal efficiency for color than that of organic matter. The removal efficiency of ammonia nitrogen increased from 14.6 to 53.3% as the current density increased, but it was lower than that of organic matter. In addition, the removal of organic matter, color, and ammonia nitrogen followed first-order reactions, according to the reaction rate analysis. The energy consumption ranged from 4.87 to 8.33 kWh/kg COD, and it was found that the organic matter removal efficiency was more efficient at high current densities. Based on various analyses, the optimal current density was 20 mA/cm2, and the corresponding energy consumption was 6.824 kWh/kg COD.
