  • In this paper, we propose the structure of heterogeneous multiprocessor's concept, which is the structure of the new type of the robot controller, and we introduce an integrating structure method, which is distributed multiprocessor within controller using sRIO. We also perform the computer simulation with using the sRIO IP core which was designed within FPGA as the method for implementation of integrated heterogeneous multiprocessor by sRIO communication. Thus, we verify the result.

  • In today's pervasive computing environments, multimedia content should be adapted to meet various conditions of network connections, terminals, and user characteristics. Scalable Video Coding (SVC) is a key solution for video communication over heterogeneous networks, where user terminals have different capabilities. This paper presents a standard-compliant approach that adapts an SVC bitstream to support multiple users. The adaptation problem is formulated as an optimization problem, focusing on the tradeoff between qualities of different spatial layers of an SVC video. Then the adaptation process is represented by standard metadata of MPEG-21, which can be solved by universal processing to enable interoperable and automatic operation. Our approach provides the users with optimal quality, a wide flexibility, and seamless adaptation. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study that shows the adaptation tradeoff between spatial layers of a conforming SVC bitstream.

  • We describe a heterogeneous simulation framework, so called DEVS-HLA, in which conventional simulation models and the DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification) models are interoperable. DEVS-HLA conceptually consists of three layers: model layer, DEVS BUS layer, and HLA (High Level Architecture) layer. The model layer has a collection of heterogeneous simulation models, such as DEVS, CSIM, SLAM, and so on, to represent various aspects of a complex system. The DEVS BUS layer provides a virtual software bus, DEVS BUS, so that such simulation models can communicate with each other. Finally, the HLA layer is employed as a communication infrastructure, which supports several good features for distributed simulation. The DEVS BUS has been implemented on the HLA/RTI (Run-Time Infrastructure) and a simple example of a flexible manufacturing system has been developed to validate the DEVS-HLA.

  • The analysis of plankton species distribution in sea or fresh water is very important in preserving marine ecosystem health. Since manual analysis is infeasible, many automatic approaches were proposed. They usually use images from in situ towed underwater imaging sensor or specially designed, lab mounted microscopic imaging system. Normally they assume that only single plankton is present in an image so that, if there is a clumping among multiple plankton of same species (homogeneous clumping) or if there are multiple plankton of different species scattered in an image (heterogeneous interspersion), they have a difficulty in recognition. In this work, we propose a deep learning based method that can detect and recognize individual plankton in images with homogeneous clumping, heterogeneous interspersion, or combination of both.

  • In this study, the effects of grouping method (homogeneous/ heterogeneous) considering students' teamwork skills on their conceptual understanding, perceptions of science learning environments, communication anxiety, communication ability, and perceptions toward small group discussions were compared. Students were taught concerning changes of states, density, and dissolution for 9 class periods. The ANCOVA results indicated that there was no significant difference in the conceptions test scores. In the subcategory of 'students' negotiation' of the perceptions of science learning environments test, high teamwork skill students perceived more positively in the heterogeneous group, but low teamwork skill students in the homogeneous group. No significant differences were found in the communication anxiety. More students in the heterogeneous group perceived unequal participation as a disadvantage of the small group discussions than those in the homogeneous group.

  • The Poisson point process (PPP) is widely used in wireless network modeling and performance analysis because it can provide tractable results for heterogeneous cellular networks (HetNets) analysis. However, it cannot accurately reflect the spatial distribution characteristics of the actual base stations (BSs). Considering the fact that the distribution of macro base stations (MBSs) is exclusive, the deployment of MBSs is modeled by the Matérn hard-core point process (MHCPP), and the deployment of pico base stations (PBSs) is modeled by PPP. This paper studies the performance of multiantenna HetNets and improves the energy efficiency (EE) of HetNets by optimizing the transmit power of PBSs. We use a simple approximate method to study the signal-to-interference ratio (SIR) distribution in two-tier MHCPP-PPP HetNets and derive the coverage probability, average data rate and EE of HetNets. Then, an optimization algorithm is proposed to improve the EE of HetNets. Finally, three transmission technologies are simulated and analyzed. The results show that multiantenna transmission has better system performance than single antenna transmission and that selecting the appropriate transmit power for a PBS can effectively improve the EE of the system. In addition, two-tier MHCPP-PPP HetNets have higher EE than two-tier PPP-PPP HetNets.

  • Small cell deployment offers a low-cost solution for the boosted traffic demand in heterogeneous cellular networks (HCNs). Besides improved spatial spectrum efficiency and energy efficiency, future HCNs are also featured with the trend of network architecture convergence and feasibility for flexible mobile applications. To achieve these goals, dual connectivity (DC) is playing a more and more important role to support control/user-plane splitting, which enables maintaining fixed control channel connections for reliability. In this paper, we develop a tractable framework for the downlink SINR analysis of DC assisted HCN. Based on stochastic geometry model, the data-control joint coverage probabilities under multi-frequency and single-frequency tiering are derived, which involve quick integrals and admit simple closed-forms in special cases. Monte Carlo simulations confirm the accuracy of the expressions. It is observed that the increase in mobility robustness of DC is at the price of control channel SINR degradation. This degradation severely worsens the joint coverage performance under single-frequency tiering, proving multi-frequency tiering a more feasible networking scheme to utilize the advantage of DC effectively. Moreover, the joint coverage probability can be maximized by adjusting the density ratio of small cell and macro cell eNBs under multi-frequency tiering, though changing cell association bias has little impact on the level of the maximal coverage performance.

  • ETSI M2M Platforms provide general infra services for machine-to-machine communication. In this paper, we propose a service-level integration methodology which can integrate a ETSI M2M platform with heterogeneous web applications based on WSDL 2.0. Considered heterogeneous web applications are the ones that use SOAP, HTTP and CoAP protocols for inter-communication. The proposed WSDL 2.0-based service-level integration methodology includes the followings; (1) We present a method of how to describe standardized M2M platform service interfaces into a WSDL 2.0 document. (2) A proposed web client generator is used to generates SOAP, HTTP and CoAP client codes from the WDSL 2.0 document. (3) We propose protocol conversion proxies which translate protocols into other protocols in web service run-time.

  • Most of the existing hand detection methods rely on the contour shape of hand after skin color segmentation. Such contour shape based computations, however, are not only susceptible to noise and other skin color segments but also inherently sequential and difficult to efficiently parallelize. In this paper, we implement and accelerate our in-house distance image based approach using CPU-GPU heterogeneous computing. Using emerging CPU-GPU heterogeneous computing technology, we achieved 5.0 times speed-up for $320{\times}240$ images, and 17.5 times for $640{\times}480$ images and our experiment demonstrates that our proposed distance image based hand detection is robust and fast, reaching up to 97.32% palm detection rate, 80.4% of which have more than 3 fingers detected on commodity processors.

  • This paper presents a novel range-free localization algorithm based on quantum particle swarm optimization. The proposed algorithm is capable of estimating the distance between two non-neighboring sensors for multi-hop heterogeneous wireless sensor networks where all nodes' communication ranges are different. Firstly, we construct a new cumulative distribution function of expected hop progress for sensor nodes with different transmission capability. Then, the distance between any two nodes can be computed accurately and effectively by deriving the mathematical expectation of cumulative distribution function. Finally, quantum particle swarm optimization algorithm is used to improve the positioning accuracy. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is superior in the localization accuracy and efficiency when used in random and uniform placement of nodes for heterogeneous wireless sensor networks.
