The objective of this paper is to analyze the structure of the wind power tree using a helical type wind turbine. The blades of a helical rotor is designed with a composite material. The structural analyses of a helical rotor have been implemented by finite element method. The structural analyses of the wind power tree which support four helical rotor, have been performed under a wind load, a rotational velocity of a rotor, and dead weight.

In this study, flow-driven rotor simulations with a given load are conducted to analyze the operational characteristics of a vertical-axis Darrieus turbine, specifically its self-starting capability and fluctuations in its torque as well as the RPM. These characteristics are typically observed in experiments, though they cannot be acquired in simulations with a given tip speed ratio (TSR). First, it is shown that a flow-driven rotor simulation with a two-dimensional (2D) turbine model obtains power coefficients with curves similar to those obtained in a simulation with a given TSR. 3D flow-driven rotor simulations with an optimal geometry then show that a helical-bladed turbine has the following prominent advantages over a straight-bladed turbine of the same size: an improvement of its self-starting capabilities and reduced fluctuations in its torque and RPM curves as well as an increase in its power coefficient from 33% to 42%. Therefore, it is clear that a flow-driven rotor simulation provides more information for the design of a Darrieus turbine than a simulation with a given TSR before experiments.

In order to extract small hydropower in the very low specific speed range of $n_s<10$, a Positive Displacement Turbine (PDT) has been proposed and steady performances have been determined experimentally. However, the suppression of large pressure fluctuation is inevitable for practical application of PDT. Therefore, present study adopted 4-lobe helical type robe to reduce the pressure fluctuation. The results show that 4-lobe helical type robe can be adopted to suppress the pressure fluctuation drastically. Moreover, efficiency and unit power of the turbine with newly proposed 4-lobe helical type lobe are higher than those of the turbine with 3-lobe straight type robe.

In order to extract micro hydropower in the very low specific speed range, a Positive Displacement Turbine (PDT) was proposed and steady performance was determined experimentally. However, the suppression of large pressure pulsation is inevitable for practical application of PDT. The objective of the present study is to reveal the mechanism and the characteristics of pressure pulsation in PDT by use of CFD and to suppress the pressure pulsation. Unsteady CFD analysis has revealed that large pressure pulsation is caused by large variation of rotational speed of the following rotor, while the driving rotor, which is output rotor, keeps constant speed. Here is newly proposed a 4-lobe helical type rotor which can reduce the pressure pulsation drastically and the performance prediction of new PDT is determined.
This study optimized the parameters of the helical gear based on the original external meshing helical gear pump, combined with the analysis of the stability and flow of the basic parameters of the equipment; herringbone gears were used to eliminate the axial force generated by the helical gears. An optimized helical gear rotor was built with NX. The error between the simulation and calculation results of pump displacement was 3.95% and the simulation results were valid. Analysis of the outlet pressure and lift changes (maximum change rates of 0.38% and 0.25%), pressure analysis of the XY center plane at different times in the same cycle (no pressure surge or drop), and analysis of the axial force of the primary and driven rotors (axis The axial force is close to 0) were performed. The results showed that the flow pulsation of the external gear pump was slight, the operation was smooth, vibration and friction were reduced, the wear of bearings and other components could be diminished, and the service life of the equipment was extended. The simulation results showed that the external gear pump met the design requirements.
The present study is numerically and experimentally performed to reveal the pumping characteristics of a helical-type molecular drag pump (HTDP) in the molecular transition flow region. In the experimental study, the pressures are measured simultaneously at the 5 positions along the helical channel of rotor under various conditions of outlet pressure and throughputs, and nitrogen is used as test gas. The outlet pressure is in the range of 26-533 Pa. As results, the local pressure changes are checked corresponding to the various outlet pressure and throughput of HTDP. In the numerical study, Navier-Stokes equations with slip boundary conditions are employed (Re< 1000, Kn< 0.1). The local pressure distribution and the pumping speed are calculated. The numerical results are compared with the experimental results. The numerically computed value agrees with the experimental data within an error of approximately 5%.

In this study, we conduct power performance and load analyses of two different types of vertical-axis tidal-current turbines using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) method. To analyze the power output and loads, we perform transient CFD simulations considering the cavitation model using ANSYS CFX. The averaged power output of an H-type rotor was 7.47 kW and 67.6 kW in normal and extreme operating conditions, respectively, which did not satisfy the initial design conditions. However, in the case of the helical-type rotor, the power output under normal and extreme conditions were close to the expected values. The cavitation, which may cause instantaneous power fluctuation, occurred repeatedly at the suction side of the rotors. In order to guarantee a more stable power supply and to prevent fatigue failure, we require a design that minimizes cavitation.

Screw rotors, the key parts of screw compressors, are used in compressing air and refrigerant due to their high productivity, compact size, low noise and maintenance. In general, a screw compressor is composed of a pair of rotors of complex geometric shape. The manufacturing cost of the screw rotors is high because the complicated helical shapes of the screw rotors are manufactured usually by the dedicated machine tools. In this study, rotor profile is divided into three parts for the efficient machining. The formed tools are designed and shared for the respective split region. By cutting the screw rotor using the formed tools, this method is more efficient than the end mill in machining rotor. Experimental results show that 4-axis machining using formed tools needs less time and has the accuracy.

The objective of this paper is to develop 360 W class wind turbine tree using a helical type wind turbine. The performance of 100 W class helical wind turbine which finished the conceptual design has been forecast through the CFD analysis. After performed the analysis of one wind turbine performance, four wind turbine have been installed at the structure of a tree type and then the change of a output data has been verified through the CFD analysis. In this study, the CFD results of a helical wind turbine tree have been shown by a velocity and pressure distribution. The result could obtain more than rated power 360 W through the CFD analysis.

The inherent problem of a Darrieus wind turbine is its inability to self-start. Usually, a motor is used to provide angular acceleration until lift forces are produced in the airfoil blades or up until the turbine can already sustain its speed on its own. This paper describes a method of improving the self-starting of an H-type Darrieus vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) by incorporating a helical Savonius turbine thus utilizing a drag-lift combination. The effect of each turbine in the combination relative to each other is investigated by testing a prototype windmill consisting of three NACA 0015 airfoil blades combined with a Savonius rotor with a helix angle of 180 degrees and whose swept area equals 30% of the entire turbine.
