  • Today, wearable technology products are used in a wide range of consumer, healthcare, bio-medical, and industrial applications. The market for wearable technology products is expected to increase dramatically over the next several years. In addition, concerns for safety, performance and reliability of wearable products keep increasing and will be essential for widespread acceptance in the marketplace. Wearable smart devices, which are generally in contact with the human body and skin, are exposed to the risk of the electric shock, burn, and explosion. Therefore, the standardization of wearable devices in terms of human safety and reliability should be very important. Furthermore, the development of test method and test certification of the wearable products will be one of the key technology for mass production. Such standardization and certification will help consumers to choose the safest and best quality wearable devices and allow manufacturers to prove the safety and quality of their products, thereby helping them to gain a competitive technology. This paper discusses the current status of the wearable smart devices as well as the standardization and test certification applicable to wearable technology products.

Development of a Smartphone-based Pupillometer

  • In ophthalmology, a pupillometer, a device to measure the diameter of the pupil of the eye, can provide information on the function of the autonomic nervous system. The current pupillometers on the market are either too large to be a handheld instrument, or relatively expensive. In this study, a pupillometer based on a smartphone was designed. Both white and infrared LEDs and a 3M pixel camera of a smartphone were applied for the visual stimuli to an eye and for the acquisition of the eye images, respectively. Contrary to the existing method of pupil measurement that usually observe the variation of pupil diameter, the proposed algorithm in this study was applied to calculate the constriction ratio of the pupillary area in response to pupillary light reflex. The results showed that the constriction ratio of the pupillary area were all in the normal range (above 4.0) from the sixteen healthy participants. It is believed that the approach to pupil measurement used in this study is suitable for a mobile interface, and this system can be applied to clinical research, home-use healthcare, and distributed to some areas which suffer from problems like a lack of medical support.

  • The whole-body massager among healthcare devices is under being popularized in a large scale as times goes by. It is critical to measure, analyze and judge the stress relaxsation trend from HRV signal using PPG in case of massager operation with such relaxsation device for removing stress of human being. There may be artifact in HRV measured signal because the measured object is under shaking with that massager in this case. We present the methodology to remove such artifact from those measured HRV signal, and then measure and analyze the desired HRV successfully in this paper.

  • 개인 휴대단말기로부터 측정된 생체정보 데이터가 PHR에 데이터베이스화되기 위해서는 응용 계층 표준 프로토콜인 HL7 CDA 표준에 따라야 한다. 하지만 국제 표준 HL7 CDA는 병원 시스템 간 의료정보 전달을 위한 프로토콜이기 때문에 개인 건강 기기로부터 측정된 생체 정보가 IEEE 11073 PHD 표준에 준하여 전달하더라도 HL7 CDA 프로토콜과 연동될 수 없다. 즉, 모바일 단말기 기반의 u-헬스케어 모니터링 서비스를 위해서는 IEEE 11073 PHD와 HL7 CDA 간 메시지 변환 게이트웨이가 필요하다. 이에 본 논문에서는 개인 휴대단말기를 통해 원격지에 있는 의료진이 사용자의 생체데이터를 실시간 관리하기 위해 ISO/IEEE 11073과 HL7 CDA 간 메시지 변환 게이트웨이 및 HL7 기반 진단지원시스템을 설계하였다.

  • Traditional speech emotion recognition techniques recognize emotions using a general training model based on the voices of various people. These techniques can not consider personalized speech character exactly. Therefore, the recognized results are very different to each person. This paper proposes an adaptive speech emotion recognition framework made from user's' immediate feedback data using a prompted labeling technique for building a personal adaptive recognition model and applying it to each user in a mobile device environment. The proposed framework can recognize emotions from the building of a personalized recognition model. The proposed framework was evaluated to be better than the traditional research techniques from three comparative experiment. The proposed framework can be applied to healthcare, emotion monitoring and personalized service.

  • Existing exercise management systems provided exercise information to the user. However, there is a problem that the accuracy is low due to the absence of an algorithm for analyzing the user's body information and providing information. In this paper, BMI(Body Mass Index) and BMR(Basal Metabolic Rate) values are analyzed to analyze user's body information. It also recommends exercise intensity and momentum to the user and graphs the history of the exercise device that the user has used. Through this, it is considered that the information corresponding to the user's body can be provided and the exercise management can be carried out.

Breathing Measurement and Sleep Apnea Detection Experiment and Analysis using Piezoelectric Sensor

  • In this paper, we implemented a respiration measurement system consisting of piezoelectric sensor, respiration signal processing device, and a viewer on a notebook. We tried an experiment for measuring respiration and detecting sleep apnea syndrome when a subject lay on a bed. We applied the respiration measurement algorithm to sensor data obtained from four subjects. In order to get a good graph shape, data manipulation methods such as moving averages and maximum values were applied. The window size for moving average was chosen as N=70, and the threshold value for each subject was customized. In this case, the proposed system showed 96.0% accuracy. When the maximum value among 90 data was applied instead of moving average, our system achieved 95.1% accuracy. In an experiment for detecting sleep apnea syndrome, the system showed that sleep apnea occurred correctly and calculated the average interval of sleep apnea. While infants or the elderly as well as patients with sleep apnea syndrome are lying down on a bed, our results are also expected to be able to cope with some accidental emergency situation by observing their respiration and detecting sleep apnea.

  • This study suggests a model of production information system that can reduce manufacturing lead time and uniformize quality by using DNC S/W as a part of constructing production information management system in the industrial field of the existing marine engine block manufacturing companies. Under the effect of development of this system, the NC machine interface device can be installed in the control computer to obtain the quality information of the workpiece in real time so that the time to inspect the process quality and verify the product defect information can be reduced by more than 70%. In addition, the reliability of quality information has been improved and the external credibility has been improved. It took 30 minutes for operator to obtain, analyze and manage the quality information when the existing USB memory is used, but the communication between the NC controller computer and the NC controller in real time was completed to analyze the workpiece within 10 seconds.

  • 인구의 고령화로 만성질환자가 증가함에 따라 개인건강관리를 위한 U 헬스 서비스에 관심이 증대되고 있다. U 헬스 서비스를 활용하기 위해서는 다양한 생체정보를 간편하게 측정하는 개인건강기기(PHD, Personal Health Device)가 필요하다. 하지만 혈압, 심전도, 혈당, 산소포화도 등을 측정하는 개인건강기기는 제작 회사마다 서로 다른 프로토콜과 포맷으로 개발되어 기기간의 상호 운용성(Interoperability)이 보장되지 않는다. 또한 각기 다른 포맷으로 측정된 데이터를 병원정보시스템(HIS, Hospital Information System)간 공유하고 관리하는데 어려움이 존재한다. 이에 따라, 본 논문에서는 개인건강기기 국제 표준인 IEEE 11073 PHD 를 기반으로 다양한 개인건강기기와 실시간으로 통신하며, 측정된 생체정보를 관리하고 전송하는 모바일 헬스케어 매니저 설계를 제시한다. 제시한 매니저는 다양한 모바일 기기 중 스마트폰 기반으로 설계하였고, 각기 다른 포맷으로 측정된 데이터를 국제표준 메시지 교환방식인 HL7 (Health Level Seven)메시지로 변환하여 전달하는 게이트웨이 역할을 담당한다.

Design and Implementation of Location and Activity Monitoring System Based on LoRa

  • The location and human activity are usually used as one of the important parameters to monitor the health status in healthcare devices. However, nearly all existing location and monitoring systems have the limitation of short-range communication and high power consumption. In this paper, we propose a new mechanism to collect and transmit monitoring information based on LoRa technology. The monitoring device with sensors can collect the real-time activity and location information and transmit them to the cloud server through LoRa gateway. The user can check all his history and current information through the specific designed mobile applications. Experiment was carried out to verify the communication, power consumption and monitoring performance of the entire system. Experimental results demonstrate that this system can collect monitoring and activity information accurately and provide the long rang coverage with low power consumption.
