Application of Indoor Air Modelling for Using Health Risk Assessment in Environmental Impact Assessment (환경영향평가에서 건강위해성평가 기법을 이용하기 위한 실내공기 모델링 적용)

  • Recognizing interaction between the environment and humans, the EIA(environmental impact assessment) movement has sought to promote more environmentally sound and informed decisions for the sake of human welfare. Therefore, most EIA programs require the consideration of human health impacts. Yet relatively few EIA documents adequately address those impacts. This study was carried out to investigate the role of EIA for reuniting the environment and human health, for preventing and reducing significant health risks, and for improving human health impact assessment by means of risk assessment. Risk assessment consists of 4 components; hazard identification, dose-response assessment, exposure assessment and risk characterization. Since most people spent their times in indoor, indoor air quality modelling can be used in exposure assessment and risk assessment. In this study, indoor $NO_2$ concentration and personal $NO_2$ exposure were estimated by Box Model using mass balance equation and time weighted average, respectively. The estimated indoor $NO_2$ concentration and the personal $NO_2$ exposure were compared by those measured, respectively. Subsequntly, health effect was assessed with these results. Consequently, exposure assessment and risk assessment using indoor air quality model may be considered to be applicable to EIA.

Investigation on PVDE & PZT Sensor Signals for the Low-Velocity Impact Damage of Gr/Ep Composite Laminates (복합적층판의 저속충격손상에 따른 PZT 센서와 PVDF 센서의 신호 분석)

  • Low-velocity impact damage is a major concern in the design of structures made of composite materials, because impact damage is hidden inside and cannot be detected by visual inspection. The piezoelectric thin film sensor can be used to detect variations in structural and material properties for structural health monitoring. In this paper, the PVDF and PZT sensors were used for monitoring impact damage initiation in Gr/Ep composite panel to illustrate this potential benefit. A series of impact test at various impact energy by changing impact mass and height is performed on the instrumented drop weight impact tester. The wavelet transform(WT) is used to decompose the piezoelectric sensor signals in this study. Test results show that the particular waveform of sensor signals implying the damage initiation and development are detected above the damage initiation impact energy. And it is found that both PZT and PVDF sensors can be used to detect the impact damage.

The Impact of Health Care Coverage on Changes in Self-Rated Health: Comparison between the Near Poor and the Upper Middle Class (의료보장성이 주관적 건강상태의 변화에 미치는 영향: 차상위계층과 상위중산층 비교)

  • Background: This study aims to analyze the impact of levels of health care coverage on the trajectory of self-rated health, comparing the near-poor which tends to be excluded in traditional health care systems with the upper middle class. Methods: The study participants were 3,687 people who sincerely responded questions regarding health care expenditures, unmet medical needs, and self-rated health in the Korea Health Panel data in 2009-2012. Results: The higher health care expenditures and the presence of unmet medical needs were significantly associated with the lower level of self-rated health. However, both factors did not significantly predict the steeper decline in the self-rated health. The results from multiple group analyses showed that health care expenditures and unmet medical needs had greater impact on the near-poor compared to their higher income counterparts. Conclusion: Public health care coverages need to be enhanced as well as reducing health care expenditures and unmet medical needs.

  • The COVID-19 global health crisis has affected the mental and psychological health and well-being of the people around the world. However, little is known about the impact of COVID-19 among Filipino teachers. This study was conducted to determine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the quality of life (QoL) of professional teachers in the Philippines. A descriptive cross-sectional study was used involving 139 licensed professional teachers. The COVID-19 Impact on Quality of Life (COV19-QoL) was the primary measure used in this study. Descriptive statistics, t-test, and one-way ANOVA were the statistical tools employed to analyze the data. Results indicated a moderate COVID-19 impact on the QoL of the teachers. There was a significant difference in the impact of COVID-19 on QoL by degree program. However, the impact of COVID-19 on QoL did not significantly differ by age, sex, marital status, employment status, monthly salary, presence of a COVID-19 case near their residence, personal knowledge of someone who was infected or died of COVID-19, presence of a medical condition, and perceived threat. The psychological well-being and QoL of teachers must be recognized and teachers must be provided with support as they continue to adapt to the impact brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study contributes to the growing literature on the impact of the pandemic.

  • Because deterioration of air quality and urban heat island directly harm health of citizens, Health Impact Assessment (HIA) and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for urban development projects needs to conduct analysis of their impacts objectively. This study aims to review appropriate methods for assessment of air quality used at each stage of urban development and to investigate prediction and assessment methods of urban heat island. In addition, by evaluating impacts of climate change following supposed urban construction performed in the central area of Korea on public health, it examines usefulness of HIA for urban construction. When urban heat island prediction and HIA method suggested in this study are applied to an imaginary city, they predict urban heat island properly and the impacts of climate changes on public health inside the city could be determined clearly by calculating life-climate index and bio-climate index related with thermal environment from the model.

Investigation of the impact of dental fear on Child Oral Health Impact Profile scores

  • Background: The Child Oral Health Impact Profile (COHIP) is a measure of oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL) in children and adolescents. This study examined the impact of dental fear on the OHRQoL by comparing the COHIP scores of children with and without dental fear. Methods: The OHRQoL in children and adolescents was measured using the Korean version of the COHIP. In total, 102 students (49 boys and 53 girls) filled in a questionnaire designed to evaluate dental fear and the OHRQoL in 2012 and 2014. Results: In 2012, the group without dental fear showed higher COHIP scores than the group with dental fear; the difference between the two groups was statistically significant. In 2014, the same pattern was observed, but the difference was non-significant for all COHIP items other than those pertaining to social-emotional well-being. Comparison of COHIP scores according to changes in fear showed that the group with continuous dental fear showed significantly lower overall COHIP, negative COHIP, and low social-emotional wellbeing scores, than the group without continuous fear in 2012 and 2014. Conclusion: We expected children with dental fear to have poor oral health, affecting their OHRQoL; however, dental fear did not affect the OHRQoL.

Impact of the Purchasing Price Reimbursement System for Insurance Drugs upon the Health Insurer's Financial Situation (실거래가상환제의 건강보험재정에 대한 영향)

  • The objective of this paper is to examine what impact the newly introduced Purchasing Price Reimbursement System, where insurance drugs are reimbursed at the prices as they were purchased by medical care providers under the maximum allowable cap, has upon the health insurer's financing situation. The impact of the Purchasing Price Reimbursement System is considered to be confined mainly to the inpatient department among three drug reimbursement fields such as inpatient department, out-patient department and pharmacy. Hypothesis was set and tested in this study for each of three components of inpatient drug reimbursement in health insurance, i.e. average price level, composition of drugs and their overall volume. Drug price level calculated in this study from 403 selected reimbursement drugs according to the Laspayres methodology revealed faster decline under the new Purchasing Price Reimbursement System than previously by $1.53\%$ on the annual average basis. However, additional 1.4 percent financial burden in the ratio of the total inpatient reimbursement was owed by the health insurer. This was analysed to be a combined result of both 2.0-3.1 percent of reduced reimbursement due to drug price decline and 3.4-4.5 percent of additional reimbursement due to drug volume increase. These results suggest that recalling the Purchasing Price Reimbursement System would not have so much impact upon the health insurer's financial situation given that the current compulsory separation between doctor's prescribing and pharmacist's dispensing is irrevocable.

The effect of subjective perception and attitude of oral health on the oral health impact profile in industrial accident injury patients (산재환자의 주관적 구강건강상태와 보건태도가 구강건강 영향지수(OHIP)에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the oral health impact profile (OHIP) in the industrial accident injury patients, and the effect of subjective perception and attitude of oral health on the oral health-related quality of life in industrial injury patients. Methods : A self-reported questionnaire was filled out by 496 industrial accident injury patients from October 29 to November 30, 2013. Data were analyzed using SPSS ver 20.0 program for chi-square test, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, and Pearson's correlation coefficient. Results : The OHIP-14 was higher oral health-related quality of life in young people, women, highly educated persons, and those having high income and frequent scaling service. The subjective perception and attitude of oral health was closely correlated to the OHIP-14. The factors influencing on the oral health-related quality of life were the subjective perception and attitude toward oral health. Conclusions : It is necessary to emphasize the oral health promotion program for industrial injury patients. The government should pay more attention to the policy for the improvement of the oral health of industrial accident injury patients in the future.

  • Environmental Impact Assesment(EIA) is composed of various procedures, such as screening, scoping, inventory survey, prediction, assessment, mitigation measure, alternative assessment, and post management. Remote sensing introduced lately begins to be applied ecosystem and land use in inventory survey and assessment of EIA. This study explains on land use classification, buffering analysis of residential area, and overlaying analysis of odor predictive data with residential area for application to EIA with remote sensing data. Residential area extracted from land use classification of remote sensing provides effectively buffering analysis of residential area in selection of landfill site with GIS. It could assess also residential effect to an offensive odor by overlaying analysis. Application methods in EIA should be enlarged to assess effectively.
