  • Directed energy deposition (DED) was adopted as a metal additive manufacturing method to develop a mold for the hot stamping process. The test piece was machined from Heatvar laminate material, and results were obtained through microstructure and defect observations, as well as hardness, tensile strength, and joint strength tests. 1) Spherical pores and irregular-shaped cavities were observed as lamination defects, and columnar dendrites formed in the structure, which tended to become coarse upon heat treatment. 2) The hardness of the heat-treated material (480HV) was slightly lower than that of the non-heat-treated material (500HV). 3) In the tensile test, the maximum tensile stress and strain of the heat-treated material were 1392 MPa and 15%, respectively, which were slightly higher than the values of 1381 MPa and 13%, respectively, for the non-heat-treated material. 4) In the case of the early final fracture in the tensile test, in most cases, pores or irregularly shaped cavities were observed at the fracture surface or near the surface. 5) In the joint strength test, most of the specimens finally fractured in the laminated metal area, and the fracture surface was intragranular. In addition, dimples formed over the entire area on the fracture surface of the fractured specimen after sufficient elongation.

  • This research work aims to investigate the effect of the aerobic bacterium, Pseudomonas aeruginosa on the mechanical and electrochemical properties of the 316L stainless steel and α-brass. These properties of both the alloys were determined after 7 days of exposure to the controlled and inoculated media at 37℃. The microstructural and electrochemical test results revealed the deleterious effects of Pseudomonas aeruginosa. After exposure to the inoculated medium, the scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed the larger pitting and formation of relatively dense biofilm on α-brass compared to 316L stainless steel. The tensile strength and hardness of 316L stainless steel were slightly affected after exposure to the controlled and inoculated media. After exposure to the controlled medium and inoculated media, the tensile strength of the α-brass was least affected but a significant decrease in the hardness (from 165 HV to 124 HV) was observed due to the severe attack induced by the Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Similarly, the open-circuit potential of the 316L stainless steel in the inoculated medium was measured to be less active (-410 mV vs Ag/AgCl) than α-brass (-550 mV vs Ag/AgCl). In the inoculated medium, potentiodynamic polarization curves confirmed the severe attack of Pseudomonas aeruginosa on α-brass (7.15 × 10-2 mm/year) compared to 316L stainless steel which registered a corrosion rate of 5.14 × 10-4 mm/year.

  • In this paper, a SiC nano electroless nickel plating layer with excellent corrosion resistance was fabricated using the Taguchi method. The electroless plated low carbon steel was subjected to tests to examine the influence of corrosive media, microhardness, and corrosion rate on the corrosion resistance of this alloy. Three different corrosive media (HCl, Na2SO4, and NaCl) at various temperatures (80, 90, and 100 ℃) were used, and at three different times (40, 80, and 120 min.) with a speed of stirring equal to 500 rpm. The results of microhardness were found from 134.276 HV to 278.578 HV at various conditions, while the corrosion rate results were obtained from 0.89643 mpy to 7.12571 mpy at different circumstances. Corrosion, and mechanical characteristics were explained using Taguchi design. Taguchi technique was used to account for all possible combinations of elements in order to conduct a complete study. Models that link the response and procedure parameters were developed using the results of these tests, and the analysis of variance was utilized to validate these models (ANOVA). For maximum efficiency, a function called "desirability" was applied to all responses at once.

  • The purpose of this study is to present basic data for hair color work plans that can consistently produce hair color design products for designers through analysis of gradient techniques among hair color design techniques. The research method was to select 10 photos of women that appeared in mass media from 2022 to September 15, 2023, extract color chips and RGB values using the Eyedropper Tool in Adobe Photoshop CS6, and convert the RGB values of the color chips into Munsell Conversion ( The data was converted into HV/C values of version 12.1.13a). Based on the extracted data, the gradient hair colors of female pop stars were analyzed by displaying the data on a color scale. As a result, in the I.R.I color scheme image scale, the image of female pop stars was more hard than soft. In addition, it was confirmed that the focus was on static rather than dynamic. Color matching images according to hair color were extracted with adjectives such as noble, decent, elegant, and subtle. Three hairstyles were created using this theme.

  • Positive bias temperature instability (PBTI) degradation of n+ and p+ poly-Si gate high-voltage(HV) SiO2 dielectric nMOSFETs was investigated. Unlike the expectation that degradation of n+/nMOSFET will be greater than p+/nMOSFET owing to the oxide electric field caused by the gate material difference, the magnitude of the PBTI degradation was greater for the p+/nMOSFET than for the n+/nMOSFET. To analyze the cause, the interface state and oxide charge were extracted for each case, respectively. Also, the carrier injection and trapping mechanism were analyzed using the carrier separation method. As a result, it has been verified that hole injection and trapping by the p+ poly-Si gate accelerates the degradation of p+/nMOSFET. The carrier injection and trapping processes of the n+ and p+ poly-Si gate high-voltage nMOSFETs in PBTI are detailed in this paper.

  • SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) is an imaging radar which can scan and image Earth System targets without solar illumination. Most Earth observation Shh systems operate in X-, C-, S-, L-, and P-band frequencies, where the shortest wavelength is approximately 1.5 cm. This means that most opaque objects in the SAR signal path become transparent and SAR systems can image the planetary surface targets without sunlight and through rain, snow and/or even volcanic ash clouds. Most conventional SAR systems in operation, including the Canada's RADARSAT-1, operate in one frequency and in one polarization. This has resulted in black and with images, with which we are familiar now. However, with the launching of ENVTSAT on March 1 2002, the ASAR system onboard the ENVISAT can image Earth's surface targets with selected polarimetric signals, HH+VV, HH+VH, and VV+HV. In 2004, Canadian Space Agency will launch RADARSAT-II, which is C-band, fully polarimetric HH+VV+VH+HV. Almost same time, the NASDA of Japan will launch ALOS (Advanced land Observation Satellite) which will carry L-band PALSAR system, which is again fully polarimetric. This means that we will have at least three fully polarimetric space-borne SAR system fur civilian operation in less than one year. Are we then ready for this new all weather Earth Observation technology\ulcorner Actual imaging process of a fully polarimetric SAR system is not easy to explain. But, most Earth system scientists, including geologists, are familiar with polarization microscopes and other polarization effects in nature. The spatial resolution of the new generation of SAR systems have also been steadily increased, almost to the limit of highest optical resolution. In this talk some new applications how they are used for Earth system observation purpose.

  • In this study, the age-hardening behavior and tensile properties of a cast AZ91-0.3Ca-0.2Y (SEN9) alloy are investigated and compared with those of a commercial AZ91 alloy. Even after homogenization heat treatment, the SEN9 alloy contains numerous undissolved secondary phases, Al8Mn4Y, Al2Y, and Al2Ca, which results in a higher hardness value than the homogenized AZ91 alloy. Under aging condition at 200 ℃, both the AZ91 and SEN9 alloys exhibit the same peak-aging time of 8 h, but the peak hardness of the latter (86.8 Hv) is higher than that of the former (83.9 Hv). The precipitation behavior of Mg17Al12 phase during aging significantly differs in the two alloys. In the AZ91 alloy, the area fraction of Mg17Al12 discontinuous precipitates (DPs) increases up to ~50% as the aging time increases. In contrast, in the SEN9 alloy, the formation and growth of DPs during aging are substantially suppressed by the Ca- or Y-containing particles, which leads to the formation of only a small amount of DPs with an area fraction of ~4% after peak aging. Moreover, the size and interparticle spacing of Mg17Al12 precipitates of the peak-aged SEN9 alloy are smaller than those of the peak-aged AZ91 alloy. The homogenized AZ91 alloy exhibits a higher tensile strength than the homogenized SEN9 alloy due to the finer grains of the former. However, the peak-aged SEN9 alloy has a higher tensile elongation than the peak-aged AZ91 alloy due to the smaller amount of brittle DPs in the former.

  • Purpose: This study investigated the effect of dentin bonding agent acidity on surface microhardness of MTA. Materials and Methods: Forty cylindrical molds (3 mm×5 mm) were prepared, and three dentin bonding agents with different acidities: Adper Single Bond 2 (ASB), Single Bond Universal (SBU), and Clearfil SE bond 2 (CSE) were applied to the inner surface of the molds (n=10). No bonding agent was applied in the control group. MTA was mixed and inserted into the molds and sealed with a wet cotton pellet for 4 days. After setting, the Vickers microhardness (HV) test was done at 200, 400, 600 ㎛ from the inner surface of the mold. One-way ANOVA was conducted for all samples. A P-value of less than .05 was considered significant. Tukey HSD test was performed for post-hoc analysis. Results: The mean HV values and standard deviations were 67.02±11.38 (Con), 48.76±11.33 (ASB), 43.78±11.19 (CSE), 37.84±9.36 (SBU), respectively. The difference between the control group and the experimental groups was statistically significant (P<0.001). The difference between ASB and SBU was statistically significant (P<0.001), while the difference between SBU and CSE was not. There were no statistically significant differences between the various points from the inner surface of the mold within each group (P>0.05). Conclusion: Results of the current study indicate that use of dentin bonding agents with MTA can reduce the surface microhardness of MTA. Moreover, there is a direct relationship between the acidity of dentin bonding agents and the surface microhardness of MTA.

  • This study aimed to compare the fluoride-releasing ability and degree of microbial attachment of a newly developed glass-hybrid restorative material (GH) with those of a high-viscosity glass ionomer (HvGIC), resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI), and composite resin (CR). In addition, the correlation between fluoride-releasing ability and microbial attachment between materials was evaluated. Specimens were prepared in a disc shape and divided into 4 groups according to the materials (GH, HvGIC, RMGI, and CR). The fluoride release experiments were performed in each group (n = 15). The amount of fluoride released was measured on days 1, 3, 7, 14, 28, and 42 after storage. For the microbial attachment experiment, 12 specimens were produced per group using Mutans Streptococci (S.mutans ), a cariogenic microorganism. S. mutans was cultured on the specimens for 24 hours, and the number of bacteria was measured. GH had the highest cumulative fluoride release and showed a significant difference when compared with RMGI (p = 0.001) and CR (p < 0.0001). Microbial attachment was the lowest in GH; however, no significant difference was observed between the materials (p = 0.169). There was no significant correlation between fluoride release from materials and microbial attachment (p > 0.05). From this perspective, remineralization of low-mineralized areas could be expected due to the high fluoride release of GH, and the effect of delaying the progression of dental caries could be predicted from the low cariogenic microbial attachment. Therefore, GH might be a useful restorative material for treating immature permanent teeth with hypomineralized enamel. However, further studies are needed about the degree of remineralization of hypomineralized areas after restoration and the capacity to recharge fluoride.

  • The directed energy deposited (DED) alloys show higher hardness values than the welded alloys due to the finer microstructure following the high cooling rate. However, defects such as microcracks, pores, and the residual stress are remained within the DED alloy. These defects deteriorate the wear behavior so post-processing such as heat treatment and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) are applied to DED alloys to reduce the defects. HIP was chosen in this study because the high pressure and temperature uniformly reduced the defects. The HIP is processed at 1150℃ under 100 MPa for 4 hours. After HIP, microcracks are disappeared and porosity is reduced by 86.9%. Carbides are spherodized due to the interdiffusion of Cr and C between the dendrite and interdendrite region. After HIP, the nanohardness (GPa) of carbides increased from 11.1 to 12, and the Co matrix decreased from 8.8 to 7.9. Vickers hardness (HV) decreased by 18.9 % after HIP. The dislocation density (10-2/m2) decreased from 7.34 to 0.34 and the residual stress (MPa) changed from tensile 79 to a compressive -246 by HIP. This study indicates that HIP is effective in reducing defects, and the HIP DED Stellite 6 exhibits a higher HV than welded Stellite 6.
