A Modified Charge Balancing Scheme for Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Inverter

  • Cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverters are currently used because it enables the integration of various sources, such as batteries, ultracapacitors, photovoltaic array and fuel cells in a single system. Conventional modulation schemes for multilevel inverters have concentrated mainly on the generation of a low harmonic output voltage, which results in less effective utilization of connected sources. Less effective utilization leads to a difference in the charging/discharging of sources, causing unsteady voltages over a long period of operation and a reduction in the lifetime of the sources. Hence, a charge balance control scheme has to be incorporated along with the modulation scheme to overcome these issues. In this paper, a new approach for charge balancing in symmetric cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter that enables almost 100% charge balancing of sources is presented. The proposed method achieves charge balancing without any additional stages or complex circuit or considerable computational requirement. The validity of the proposed method is verified through simulation and experiments.

Modeling and Experimental Validation of 5-level Hybrid H-bridge Multilevel Inverter Fed DTC-IM Drive

  • This paper aims to improve the performance of conventional direct torque control (DTC) drives proposed by Takahashi by extending the idea for 5-level inverter. Hybrid cascaded H-bridge topology is used to achieve inverter voltage vector composed of 5-level of voltage. Although DTC is very popular for its simplicity but it suffers from some disadvantages like- high torque ripple and uncontrollable switching frequency. To compensate these shortcomings conventional DTC strategy is modified for five levels voltage source inverter (VSI). Multilevel hysteresis controller for both flux and torque is used. Optimal voltage vector selection from precise lookup table utilizing 12 sector, 9 torque level and 4 flux level is proposed to improve DTC performance. These voltage references are produced utilizing a hybrid cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter, where inverter each phase can be realized using multiple dc source. Fuel cells, car batteries or ultra-capacitor are normally the choice of required dc source. Simulation results shows that the DTC drive performance is considerably improved in terms of lower torque and flux ripple and less THD. These have been experimentally evaluated and compared with the basic DTC developed by Takahashi.

A Generalized Space Vector Modulation Scheme Based on a Switch Matrix for Cascaded H-Bridge Multilevel Inverters

  • The cascaded H Bridge (CHB) multilevel inverter (MLI) is popular among the classical MLI topologies due to its modularity and reliability. Although space vector modulation (SVM) is the most suitable modulation scheme for MLIs, it has not been used widely in industry due to the higher complexity involved in its implementation. In this paper, a simple and novel generalized SVM algorithm is proposed, which has both reduced time and space complexity. The proposed SVM involves the generalization of both the duty cycle calculation and switching sequence generation for any n-level inverter. In order to generate the gate pulses for an inverter, a generalized switch matrix (SM) for the CHB inverter is also introduced, which further simplifies the algorithm. The algorithm is tested and verified for three-phase, three-level and five-level CHB inverters in simulations and hardware implementation. A comparison of the proposed method with existing SVM schemes shows the superiority of the proposed scheme.

  • A novel single-stage half-bridge high frequency resonant inverter using ZVS(Zero Voltage Switching) with high input power factor suitable for induction heating applications is presented in this paper. The proposed high frequency resonant Inverter integrates half-bridge boost rectifier as power factor corrector(PFC) and half-bridge resonant inverter into a single stage. The input stage of the half-bridge boost rectifier is working in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) with constant duty cycle and variable switching frequency. Simulation results through the Pspice have demonstrated the feasibility of the proposed inverter. This proposed inverter will be able to be practically used as a power supply in various fields as induction heating applications, DC-DC converter etc.

H-브릿지 멀티레벨 인버터의 전압 지연 해석 및 전류 제어 보상 (Analysis of Voltage Delay and Compensation for Current Control in H-Bridge Multi-Level Inverter)

  • 본 논문에서는 고전압 전동기 가변속 장치인 H-브릿지 멀티레벨(H-Bridge Multi-Level; HBML) 인버터를 이용한 유도 전동기 벡터 제어시 인버터의 출력 전압 위상 지연 현상을 해석하고 전류 제어기의 보상 기법을 제시하였다. Phase-Shifted Pulse Width Modulation (PSPWM) 기법을 적용한 HBML 인버터는 개별 인버터 모듈이 독립적으로 동작할 수 있어서 확장성과 모듈화 능력이 향상되는 장점이 있다. 그러나 이러한 PSPWM을 적용한 HBML 인버터는 기준 전압과 실제 전압 사이에 위상 차이가 있기 때문에 출력 주파수에 대한 샘플링 주파수의 비율이 충분하지 않은 고속 영역에서 전류 제어기를 불안정하게 하는 원인이 된다. 전류 제어기의 불안정성은 기준 전압과 출력 전압의 위상 차이를 보상하는 제안된 방법을 추가함으로써 제거하였다. 본 방법은 인버터의 스위칭 주파수가 낮고, 전동기 속도가 높은 조건에서 PSPWM을 이용한 HBML 인버터 시스템에 효과적이며, 13레벨로 구성된 HBML 인버터로 구동되는 6,600[V] 1,400[kW] 유도전동기 실험을 통해 제안된 방법의 타당성을 입증하였다.

  • This paper presents the adoption of PWM converter to enhance input power factor in inverter arc welder. By using PWM converter in inverter arc welder, the disadvantages of bridge diode converter such as low input power factor is improved, new NCT(Noise Cut Transformer) is designed to reduce noise which has harmful effect in switching component, half bridge PWM inverter is adopted to reduce cost in inverter arc welder.

  • This paper proposes new 13-level inverter topology and DC/DC converter buck-boost structure topology for multilevel, compounding uni-directional and bi-directional switches, and proposes high-efficient multilevel inverter system in which the proposed two PCS(Power Conditioning System) was connected in series. In proposed multilevel inverter of forming a output 13-level phase voltage by using total 18 switching parts, Then bi-directional switch has a characteristic of reducing conduction loss and controlling the reactive power effectively by separating electrically from the neutral point. DC/DC converter for supplying in dependent 3 DC voltage to the proposed multi-level inverter generates 180-degree phase shifted PWM by the symmetrically combined structure of 2 buck-boost converter and twice switching frequency efficiency can be obtained, meanwhile, the converter can step up/down the output voltage and 20% output can be generated comparing the input voltage. This proposed system is verified with the simulation and laboratory test.

  • 일반적으로 PWM인버터에 발생된 고조파와 노이즈는 스위칭 주파수, dv/dt와 di/dt, PWM 스위칭 방법에 의해 영향을 받는다. 멀티레벨 인버터가 고전력 시스템에 적용되어 낮은 주파수에서 동작할 때 이것은 큰 고조파 성분과 노이즈를 발생하게 된다. 따라서 멀티레벨 인버터에 출력 필터가 요구된다. 본 논문에서는 H-bridge 7레벨 인버터 시스템을 사용한 3상 유도 전동기 구동 시스템의 고조파와 노이즈 감소를 위해 출력 필터를 설계하였다. 가격이 저렴하고 간단한 구조를 가지며, 고조파와 노이즈를 효과적으로 감소시킬 수 있는 수동필터는 멀티레벨 인버터 시스템을 사용한 3상 유도전동기 구동시스템에 적용되었다. 설계된 시스템은 향상되었고, 시뮬레이션과 실험을 통해 그 타당성을 증명하였다.

  • This paper proposes the reliability improvement of H-Bridge Multi-level (HBM) inverter. This reliability can be implemented through modularization of power circuit, distribution of controller, duplication of controller and communication, and continuous operation method in case of power cell failure for driving medium-voltage & high-power induction motor. It is shown that the modularization and expansion characteristics of the HBM inverter are improved since the individual inverter modules operate more independently when using the proposed concept. Also the fault tolerance is increased by using power cell bypass. The proposed design and control methods are described in detail and the validity of the proposed system is verified experimentally in various industrial fields.

  • In this paper, we proposed the electric circuit using one common arm of H-Bridge Inverters to reduce the number of switching component in multi-level inverter combined with H-Bridge Inverters and Transformers. and furthermore we suggested the new multi-level PWM inverter using PWM level to reduce THD(Total Harmonic Distortion). and we used the switching method that can be same rate of usage at each transformer. Also, we tested the proposed prototype 9-level inverter to clarify the proposed electric circuit and reasonableness of control signal for the proposed multi-level PWM inverter.
