  • The purpose of this study was to think about 'the nature of the mind' through the extraction of contents related to the 'mind' which is contained in "Non-eo(the Analects of Confucius)" and to devise a 'Non-Eo' counseling program intended for elementary school students by finding out counseling elements related to the growth of the mind. The 'Non-Eo' counseling program developed in this study was 10 lessons of forty minutes each and divided the group counseling procedure into three phases as introduction, progress, and wrap-up. The subjects of this study were 40 elementary school students in upper grades in a specific county: 20 students in the control and experimental group respectively. The 'Non-Eo' counseling program was applied to the experimental group twice a week for five weeks and it was not applied to the control group. Two measurement tools were used in order to verify the effects: the self-esteem measurement test adopted by Gong, Tae-Su(1998) which was originated from the selfesteem measurement test for children developed by Coopersmith(1967) and the friendship measure test adopted by Jo, Seong-rye(2001) which originated from the friendship measure test developed by Furman and Bierman(1983). The results were as follows; Firstly, there was a significant difference between the growth of self-esteem of the students in the experimental group and that in the control group; in general, the p-value of the experimental group was .032. Secondly, there was a significant difference between the growth of friendship of the students in the experimental group and that in the control group; in general, the p-value of the experimental group was .046. The fact that this study carried out a new counselling approach called 'Non-Eo' counseling based on the contents related to 'the growth of the mind' in "Non-eo" is of great significance.

  • This study was conducted to assess the effect of nutrition counseling for postoperative female breast cancer patients (N = 38). In baseline survey, we investigated the nutrition parameters by measuring anthropometric and biochemical blood index and assessing nutrient intake using recall method. Individual nutrition counseling was performed 3 times with 2 - 3 weeks intervals. Patients were offered nutrition information related to breast cancer and desirable life style after cancer operation. The effects of counseling program were assessed 2 month later. Of biochemical parameters, serum total cholesterol level was significantly reduced after nutrition counseling program. Nutrient intakes of postoperative breast cancer patients were generally below the RDA level at the baseline survey. After nutrition counseling, mean daily intake of total energy, protein, calcium were significantly elevated. Of dietary habit, meal regularity and control of portion size were improved and fruits and vegetables intake were significantly increased after nutrition counseling. Control of fatty food intake and alcohol drinking were significantly improved after nutrition counseling program. Score of general nutrition knowledge and knowledge about breast cancer, were significantly increased after nutrition counseling from 2.1 to 3.2 and from 2.3 to 3.8, respectively. It can be postulated that the dietary habit and nutrients intake of postoperative breast cancer patients can be improved by individual nutrition counseling program. In further study, the systematic group nutrition counseling program is needed.

  • Purpose: This study is designed as a non-equivalent, control group pre/post-test for identifying effectiveness of a workplace walking program using a fitness tracker including individual counseling and tailored text messaging. Methods: Seventy-nine employees from two large companies were allocated into an intervention group (n=39) and a control group (n=40). Participants were asked to wear a fitness tracker (Fitbit Charger HR) during 24-hour, 5-days per week, for 10 weeks. The intervention group was provided with daily walking steps measured by Fitbit, weekly counseling with a specifically designed workbook, and seven weekly text messaging, and the control group with the fitness tracker only. Results: At the week 10 measurement, there were significant differences between the intervention and control groups in physical activity self-efficacy (p<.001), physical activity behavior (p<.001), daily walking steps (p<.001), systolic blood pressure (p=.033), and wellness (p<.001). Conclusion: These results suggest that the workplace walking program using a fitness tracker including individual counseling and tailored text messaging is more effective for persons with 10,000 steps/day. Therefore, it is recommended to actively apply this workplace walking program to inactive employees for encouraging regular physical activities and improving their wellness.

  • This study aims to identify the effects and traits of narrative online group counseling for college students by comparing them with face-to-face group counseling. For this purpose, 18 college students were assigned as experimental group (videoconferencing method, using "Zoom"), comparison group (face-to-face method), and control group (no treatment). 8 sessions of narrative group counseling program was conducted for two groups. The difference between pre- and post test scores of 'self-identity' and 'relationship' showed significant improvement in 'self-identity' in both experimental and comparison groups, while positive change in 'relationship' was only significant in the experimental group. The traits of online group counseling experience were identified by comparing the post-interview data asking about their counseling experiences. In conclusion, we found that despite the various limitations, the context of online group counseling showed similar effects to face-to-face group counseling, and suggested a direction for the development of online group counseling.

  • Purpose: This study was done to identify effects of a smoking cessation program including telephone counseling and text messaging using stages of change for outpatients who have had a myocardial infarction (MI). Methods: This research was a quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest. The participants were 48 outpatients (experimental group=24, control group=24) recruited from one university hospital. They were randomly assigned to one of two groups: (a) an experimental group with telephone counseling (once a week) and text messaging (five times a week) using stages of change, and (b) a control group with traditional telephone counseling (once a month). Efficacy of the intervention was measured by comparing the two groups on smoking-related variables at 3 weeks and 12 weeks. Results: At the 3-week and 12-week measurements, there were significant differences between the experimental and control groups on smoking cessation self-efficacy (p<.001), nicotine dependence (p<.001), CO levels (p<.001), and smoking cessation rates (p<.001). Conclusion: The results indicate that the smoking cessation program including telephone counseling and text messaging using stages of change is effective for outpatients after a MI. Further attention should be paid to the intensity of the smoking cessation program and periods for long-term follow-up.
