  • Children from low-income families are vulnerable to variable psychological and emotional stress related to financial issues and dysfunctional families. The subjects were 15 1st to 3rd graders who were low on the Self Esteem Scale (SES). They were attending an after-school center for elementary school students. They participated in three art therapy groups from April to October 2005. Children's depressive symptoms and self-esteem were assessed using the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) and an observational check-list. Results showed that the group art therapy program brought about significant effects on increasing self-esteem of the children and reducing depressive symptoms, showing that group art therapy can facilitate emotional and psycho-social growth of children from low-income families and can be developed in family-based community programs.

  • Purpose : In this study, a group art therapy program was applied to mothers who are the main rears of disabled children to confirm its effect by comparing the self-esteem and parenting efficacy of the mothers prior to and after the program. Methods : 17 subjects recruited by using the 2-group prior-after control group study design method were randomly allocated. The study was conducted on 8 subjects in the experimental group for whom an art therapy program is applied and 9 subjects in the control group. The experimental group was subjected to group art therapy lasting 60 minutes once a week. Activity goals and contents were predetermined for each subject for each session, and a total of 10 sessions of the program was applied for 10 weeks. Self-esteem and parenting efficacy prior to and after the program of the subjects were measured by using corresponding self-esteem and parenting efficacy scales. Measurement data were analyzed by using the Mann-Whitney Test. Results : It was possible to observe that the self-esteem and parenting efficacy of the subjects in the experimental group to whom the art therapy program was applied underwent more significant changes in comparison to those of the control group (p<.01). Conclusion : Group art therapy induces social support experiences of group therapy and an improvement of an assertive attitude towards art therapy. Since there was a significant improvement of self-esteem and parenting efficacy in the results of this study when the group art therapy program is applied, it is believed its clinically meaningful application would be possible. In particular, it can be utilized in programs for disabled children in a family unit from the perspective that it improves parenting efficacy, which can impart an affirmative effect not only to the main rear but also to all the family members.

  • Through the previous studies(I,II), it was observed that human follicular fluid(HFF) was more effective than human fetal cord serum(HFCS) on promoting meiotic resumption of oocytes and improving embryonic development of mouse in vitro. On the basis of these results, we have gradually exchanged HFCS with HFF as protein supplement in human ART. This study was performed to investigate the efficiency of HFF on improving the pregnancy rate in ART. Oocytes were retrieved transvaginally from patients treated with pituitary suppression with GnRH-agonist and ovarian stimulation with human menopausal gonadotro-pin(HMG) and pure follicle stimulating hormone(FSH). Aspirated oocytes were rinsed and cultured in TCM-199 containing HFF, and the concentrations of HFF were adjusted to 10, 20, and 30% according to the use for insemination, embryo growth and embryo transfer, respectively. As possible as, we tried to do embryo transfer into fallopian tube to mimic the coincidence of the cell stage with the place of sojourn in vivo, so we performed various ART programs(IVF & ET; in vitro fertilization, ZIFT; zygote intra fallopian-tube transfer, ZIFT & ET) according to the tubal conditions of patients. On the while, intra cytoplasmic sperm injection(ICSI) was used to assist IVF of the patients who had shown poor standard IVF results by immunological or severe male factor. Of the 255 cycles of ART programs using HFF as protein supplement, 118 cycles were turn out to be succeeded in pregnancy(46.2%, per cycle, p<0.05), while 21 pregnancies were achieved in the 69 cycles using HFCS(30.4%). The 255 cycles using HFF were subdivided into cycles with the type of ART programs, and each pregnancy rate of the ART programs were 44.7% (IVF & ET, 76/170 cycles), 53.4%(ZIFT, 31/58 cycles) and 40.7% (ZIFT & ET, 11/27 cycles), respectively. In the 61 ICSI cycles using HFF, 28 cycles succeed in pregnancy(45.9%), while 7 pregnancies were obtained in the 17 ICSI cycles using HFCS. Also the ongoing pregnancy rate in the group using HFF(78.8%, 93/118 cycles) was higher than that in the group using HFCS(61.9%). Therefore, we found that the use of HFF as protein supplement was more suitable and effective than the use of HFCS to improve the pregnancy rate in ART.

The program was combined with Art Therapy theory and with a practical part for students to have a psychological understanding of self development(ego-identity, self-esteem and interpersonal relationship). The subjects were 38 students who were registered in the Art Therapy course at N university. It was a two hour-course and was offered every week. The first 40 minutes of the class were used for explaining Art Therapy theory, and the last 80 minutes were given for practice. To analyze the effect of the program, the index of ego-identity, the index of self-esteem and the index of interpersonal relationship were used. Frequency, percentage and standard deviation were calculated with SPSS 12.0, and a paired t-test was followed. According to the results, this art therapy program has an effect on the subjectivity and future-confidence of students, which includes the sub-categories of self-identity. However, there was no effect found in the category of self-esteem. Comprehension, which is under the interpersonal relationships category, showed statistically meaningful differences after the program was done. Based on this study, it was revealed that Art Therapy as a part of the Liberal Arts programs, which incorporates a large number of students, can have a similar effect on people compared to the Group Art Therapy, which incorporates a relatively smaller number of people.
